idk if i'll hear a more impressive record this year. i was really into their previous album even though i think it got by more on velocity than songcraft. this one has the songs, which allows the extremely fractured metalcore to join p seamlessly with the glittery emo/post-rockish parts. there are also several weird synthy and/or jazzy digressions; it's probably one of the most dynamic records i've ever heard. i keep describing them as "converge and paramore at once" but neither comparison really encompasses their whole thing nor are they deep enough. elliott's false cathedrals as played by early cave-in maybe? idk, i can't believe this music exists

brad I'm so glad you're back to help me flip out over this record because I got nowhere trying to promote it on the metal thread and it didn't feel right to try on the emo thread

Eva's vocals are sort of unbelievable? I mentioned elsewhere that her clean vocals remind me of Andrea Zollo but her harsh vocals sound like a completely different person

Simon H., Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:40 (seven years ago)

I listened to some of it via the metal thread and liked "Aftermath". Something about the screamy mathcore tracks hasn't clicked yet.

jmm, Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:42 (seven years ago)

I love the way "Aftermath" and the long intro track lull you in and then "Rituals" completely breaks the peace. Brave way to open a record.

Also, the big synth washes on "A Flood of Light" are deeply satisfying

Simon H., Thursday, 15 March 2018 19:44 (seven years ago)

this is sounding v exciting. holy shit 'balancing the dark' has just begun whoooooa

imago, Thursday, 15 March 2018 20:10 (seven years ago)

this band never quite did it for me before but this is the assumption of the sceptre oceansize dropped

imago, Thursday, 15 March 2018 20:12 (seven years ago)

except different

imago, Thursday, 15 March 2018 20:12 (seven years ago)

I do like the Vangelis-y stuff in "A Flood Of Light"

jmm, Thursday, 15 March 2018 20:24 (seven years ago)

This is the best thing I've ever heard

tangenttangent, Thursday, 15 March 2018 21:03 (seven years ago)

i haven't listened to this band since i saw them live in 07/08 (was a great show and they were ridiculously young) but i should check this out maybe

Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 15 March 2018 21:10 (seven years ago)

I thought they were just like a little math rock band who I occasionally liked a bit. This is totally different and wildly ambitious! Thank you, Brad! (And sorry Simon H for not spying this in the metal thread)

yeah I saw them a couple of times at about that time (I dug them though they were a little too screamy for my taste and I preferred Cutting Pink With Knives who I think were on the same bill both times) but had no idea they were even still together - p surprising for a band that started so young, well done to them. will check this out!

Yeah, still incredible the next day. Balancing The Dark is preposterously good

imago, Thursday, 28 June 2018 17:15 (seven years ago)

Both in my top...five? of the year so far though - no other metal albums have come close

anyone who came onboard for this one, pls check out the previous album, which is slightly less crazily ambitious but imho just as good

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Monday, 29 October 2018 14:37 (six years ago)

imago, Friday, 4 February 2022 15:49 (three years ago)

i don't have many thoughts other than "this shit rips" and "the beautiful and the brutal have never been better integrated"

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 4 February 2022 15:52 (three years ago)
