It really is country! Well, country-dance-pop I guess (more country overall than the new Musgraves though, arguably). And also very good! The country cadences suit her voice perfectly. It's probably a bit repetitive over the course of an album but this is a totally new sound/look for her (give or take "Cowboy Style") so give her a break!
Who else wants to talk about the new forever-soundtrack to gay line-dancing events?

after years of minogue love (even BH knew and accepted her place re KM), her last album did little for me.after the recent single, i suspect this one aint for me.needless to say i will be very happy to be proven wrong.

I feel like "Dancing" is not really a stand-out song but makes more sense on the album.
Oddly the whole thing reminds me in feel slightly of Saint Etienne's 'Words & Music', though that's a misleading comparison, probably - I guess I mean that it all feels very comfortable and understated and warm.
― Tim F, Friday, 6 April 2018 22:02 (six years ago) link
The two singles are definitely not the best songs on here by a long way. Stop Me From Falling was a really bizarre pick. Raining Glitter, Shelby '68 and title track are early highlights. Lost Without You is my favourite song here and it's relegated to bonus track. It's this album's If I'm Dancing.

pitchfork pan lol
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 7 April 2018 02:02 (six years ago) link
The title track opens with a yodelling vocal line that appears to reference Ennio Morricone’s theme song to The Good, the Bad and The Ugly, in a broad, meaningless nod to American culture that ranks right up there with Europeans who get really into the NFL.
🤔

yeah...i’m really not feeling this album.

i think the funniest part is the insinuation about europeans who like watching american football xp

This whole thing is really great I have decided.

Really loving the new album now and yes, a Kylie poll sounds essential.
― kitchen person, Saturday, 14 April 2018 19:06 (six years ago) link
really? It sounds meh to me -- Music thirteen years too late. I'd love a poll though!
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 14 April 2018 19:09 (six years ago) link
Yeah, I thought it was kind of patchy and too slight at first, but I've found myself going back to it a lot over the last week. Lots of really great hooks that keep getting stuck in my head. I think she gives good performances too. She sounds so relaxed and happy throughout. Reminds of Britney's Glory in that way. It's not on the level of Fever or Aphrodite or anything, it's just hitting the spot for me right now. A huge improvement over her last album.

wow uh, "sincerely yours" is super good right

i don't think this warrants a music comparison either compositionally or as a career move. "just one kiss" sounds like an album track from crj's kiss with acoustic guitars

"one last kiss"* lol

Yeah I'm not sold on the album yet but "sincerely yours" is gret
― bunny slopes, Saturday, 14 April 2018 20:43 (six years ago) link
Really excited for a Kylie poll! I've got a huge, glaring blind spot between the first couple records and Fever. I assume at least Light Years and Impossible Princess are must-listens?
― bunny slopes, Saturday, 14 April 2018 20:55 (six years ago) link
yes! i think so anyway. the 1994 s/t is also low key a deep house record for at least three songs in a row and otherwise has her two best songs ("confide in me" and "put yourself in my place")
kylie also has.... so many b-sides

A superficial comparison, true, but a few of these tracks sound as if they took the "Impressive Instant" and "Don't Tell Me" approaches.

ordered the deluxe edition and it arrived a few days ago and I’ve had this in heavy rotation in the car (along w/Wildflowers by Tom Petty and Wu-tang Forever.)
I’m enjoying this album a ton. It’s a cut below Fever and X and Aphrodite but a substantial cut above Kiss Me Once. The fake Morricone bit in the title track is great. But I also think the country angle is overstated, I think a lot of this sounds more balearic than it does Nashville.
― omar little, Saturday, 14 April 2018 21:59 (six years ago) link
Which isn’t to say the country stuff isn’t present, nor to say it isn’t executed well n
― omar little, Saturday, 14 April 2018 22:00 (six years ago) link
omg I wish that Dancing sounded 37% more Balearic, the remix upthread is poo.

Kickstarter for a Lissvik remix imo
ok that's it, i'm determined to do a kylie minogue poll at some pointdo thisgolden is… look i really really hate all forms of country music, but maybe half the songs on this album don’t piss me off

her new record is out on friday. the other two singles haven't wowed me, but "say something" only grows more and more endearing, to the point where this version with a gospel choir (posted yesterday) basically made me spontaneously burst into tears (?!?!?) god bless kylie!!!!
