for shame that this hasn't been polled yet

Heart of the Sunrise or go home.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 13 April 2018 00:46 (seven years ago)

Great album, but not a hard choice: "Heart of the Sunrise"

JRN, Friday, 13 April 2018 00:46 (seven years ago)

South Side, baby!

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 13 April 2018 00:54 (seven years ago)

I'm probably going to go with the one that I named an email address after in the end but there are some strong contenders.

Roundabout is a pretty close second for me. Definitely one of the most breathtaking radio singles ever.

"Long Distance Runaround" for me, because of the e m p t y s p a c e so graciously left for us (aided by ridiculous bass-drum work by Bill Bruford), as we're waiting to feel the sound, like mountains coming out of the sky and standing there (was it ever colder on that day? I feel lost in the city)

The double bass drum in the first verse when Jon sings "Cold summer" and the Chris Squire bass run when Jon sings "One... Hun...dred"; which he follows with this rad downward bass slide during the second verse when Jon sings "...Sou---ou--ou--ound".

Steve and Rick harmonizing in that awesomely-Bach-esque riff ain't so bad, either.

Prefecture, Friday, 13 April 2018 03:15 (seven years ago)

it's going to be tough to choose between roundabout and south side

long distance runaround!!!

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 13 April 2018 04:17 (seven years ago)

Voting for South Side because it is such a great song, but so often overshadowed by the bigger hit tracks. Love all of Howe's interjections in the verses, and Bruford's drumming is totally badass. A real gritty, chugging song for Yes.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 13 April 2018 04:38 (seven years ago)

I probably mentioned it in the classic rock poll thread a few years back but I didn't realize just how heroic Steve Howe's performance on Roundabout was until I watched a live video. The man also has A+++ guitar faces.

I remember trying to learn "Roundabout" on guitar and struggling mightily. Howe must have some really long fingers.

frogbs, Friday, 13 April 2018 13:41 (seven years ago)

'South Side of the Sky' is the one that gets stuck in my head the most from this, so that.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 13 April 2018 13:50 (seven years ago)

Not that I know a lot of their work, but I still love "Roundabout" 46 years after I loved it on Top 40. Gone, gone, gone--couldn't get a song like that anywhere near the radio/charts/whatever today.

clemenza, Friday, 13 April 2018 13:52 (seven years ago)

Yeah, it seems almost surreal that Close to the Edge was a top 5 album.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Friday, 13 April 2018 13:57 (seven years ago)

I'm not sure if I have ever listened to the single edit of "Roundabout"! Classic rock stations always play the album version ime.

South Side of the Sky

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 13 April 2018 14:00 (seven years ago)

first time I heard "Roundabout" I wondered why they'd borrowed the intro of "From the Beginning" even though it was definitely the other way around

still weird to have two radio hits begin the exact same way

frogbs, Friday, 13 April 2018 14:02 (seven years ago)

I've been faked out by that too.

pplains, Friday, 13 April 2018 14:26 (seven years ago)

Had to be Roundabout, that bassline is so fun to play. But for the most part I don't think this album stacks up against their other albums from their good era, Yes don't really work in short-form for me. But The Fish is pretty cool, it sounds surprisingly ahead of its time I think, you can almost hear Tool being invented.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 13 April 2018 16:21 (seven years ago)

This album would be a perfect 10 if it lost the solo crap

The Fish is OK but the others are such a drag

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 13 April 2018 16:22 (seven years ago)

True, the Wakeman and Brufors ones are my least favorite, others are fine.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 13 April 2018 16:28 (seven years ago)

Fine but unnecessary

Heart of the Sunrise over South Side of the Sky because of the cheesy light entertainment section in the latter.

"We Have Heaven" is one of my favorites

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 13 April 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)

I actually like how those short solo bits work to break up the longer compositions.

Going from Roundabout to Cans & Brahms as to be about the shittiest, biggest letdown first to second track transition ever.

I find the lyrics to Heart of the Sunrise far more perplexing than The Camera Eye. You could probably say that about any Yes song vs any Rush song though.

calstars, Tuesday, 6 November 2018 02:45 (six years ago)

Yeah, the top 4 (plus 'The Fish', which I see more as a coda to 'Long Distance Runaround' - can't have one without the other) are the real meat of this record. Anything additional is just highly listenable padding.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 6 November 2018 18:38 (six years ago)

'Mood For A Day' isn't as enjoyable as 'Clap' but it's kinda funny seeing it only get one vote when I assume these are some very difficult songs to play.

Cornelius Fondue (Matt #2), Friday, 8 November 2019 19:03 (five years ago)

Yes was a band that was partly great for reasons beyond the control of any of its members. The corny "give each member a feature" aspect of this album is evidence of just how questionable a lot of their ideas and taste were. I always pictured that as being Jon Anderson's influence although IDK for sure. Jon Anderson himself has a lot of lame tendencies (as does Rick Wakeman) and yet both work exceedingly well over that rhythm section.

i love heart of the sunrise so much

ت (jim in vancouver), Friday, 8 November 2019 19:54 (five years ago)

the 'give each member a feature' is a fun aspect of the album imo, and the fish and mood for a day stand pretty well on their own tbh.

it's filler, but sometimes it's nice to have some filler to welcome us into the band's sonic world.

kanye kendrick frank kendrick frank kanye (voodoo chili), Friday, 8 November 2019 20:10 (five years ago)

I like all the solo bits, besides Wakemans. Mood for a Day is really pretty and I like The Fish has an extended coda to Long Distance Runaround. Even Jon's is pretty fun.

frogbs, Friday, 8 November 2019 20:17 (five years ago)

bruford's is kinda pointless, but it's also 30 seconds long, so it's fine.

kanye kendrick frank kendrick frank kanye (voodoo chili), Friday, 8 November 2019 20:44 (five years ago)
