This is something my friends say to me all of the time and it pisses me off. What do people say about your tastes that aggravates you.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the new thing at the local record store is they ask me if Chuck Eddy likes it. And then they smile.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Then I usually say "fuck off".

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 17:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't let it bug you, Chris. If they don't share your enthusiasm or at least see the merit in music that probably has a bit more depth and/or emotional insight than the whistleheaded pop that rules today's music scene than they're probably not worth talking to in the first place. But, by the same token, music can mean different things to different people. Some folks may just view (or, rather, hear) music as purely background filler or simply escapism (probably the same people who think Rob Schneider/Adam Sandler films are the veritable zenith of comedy), whereas others may find solace in it or use it as some sort've healing catharsis.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Alex your mention of Rob Schneider/Adam Sandler movies strikes up an interesting story. My wife and I went to see "Punch Drunk Love" last weekend. We knew damn well it wasn't a typical Sandler movie and being fans of Paul Thomas Anderson we knew what we were getting. Well the reaction when the movie was over by the "townies" so to speak was hysterical. Lots of "what the fuck was that shit, and I want my money back." So needless to say your right. The town I live in and the majority of my friends do not have open minds about music. Its either Limp Bizkit, Kid Rock or its "gay" or "suicide music". This all goes back to the Frat-Boy attitude thing..

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

My friends say "This isn't music."

Rahul Kamath (Rahul Kamath), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris, do your friends ever watch dark films?

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose other Adam Sandler films are dark and smelly by default.

My mom back in 1994 wondered about all the dark and depressing music that folks my age apparently listened to all the time. I started making tapes for her of a lot of recent stuff that in fact I felt worked against this claim. This is how I turned her into a Mojave 3, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk and In the Nursery fan. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)

no, dark films to them are of course "gay" and/or "weirdo movies". I have a few friends who are indie movie fans. Its great though because I never have to share my DVD collection with them.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:33 (twenty-three years ago)

dark films to them are of course "gay" and/or "weirdo movies"

Or as Cartman would have it, 'gay cowboys eating pudding.'

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course I have a sense of immense pleasure when I get to start an argument with people over their choice of music. I guess im just a condescending ass though. I tend to pick on people around here because of their choice of music.
Co-worker: "Oh man, I can't wait until the Creed concert this weekend!"
Me: "Are you fuckin shitting me? Worst band evah!"

Arguement ensues with co-worker/friend who proceeds to ask what I listen to and then they say "haven't heard any of those bands".

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:40 (twenty-three years ago)

'Or as Cartman would have it, 'gay cowboys eating pudding.'

The South Park movie around here is considered an Oscar winner.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I'm damn lucky in that my coworker has pretty much similar taste to me on a variety of levels. We've gone to see Tool twice!

The South Park movie around here is considered an Oscar winner.

Best movie of that year, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 19:43 (twenty-three years ago)

The films comparison is interesting. I find that most of my firends are extremely discerning about music, but when it comes to my choice of cinema they groan and say 'oh bloody art movie'.

Daniel (dancity), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Mostly people say I have "interesting" taste.

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 13 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

"well that just sounds like noise to me"

officially the lamest comment anyone could ever make about your music taste. i get that a lot.

racing_the_tide (racing_the_tide), Thursday, 14 November 2002 09:41 (twenty-three years ago)

people tell me everything i listen to makes them want to jump out of a window and then they ask me why i haven't jumped out of the window yet.

Honda (Honda), Thursday, 14 November 2002 09:43 (twenty-three years ago)

That I'm too indiscriminating.

And they're probably right.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Somebody came over to my flat once, I told them they could put on whatever they wanted and gestured at the wall of CDs - without even looking they said "What's the point? I know there's not going to be ONE thing in there that I'd like"

dave q, Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

My friends like the music I like, to a certain extent, I guess house isn't too weird and all of them have some kind of consistent tastes. Except one maybe.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Chris are they right?

I don't really ever hear anything that annoys me. In fact I certainly give more than I get on this one.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you mean you play things which annoy your friends?

I don't bother anymore, although I often become sick of something more quickly and then have to shout "NO I WILL NOT PLAY LAYO AND BUSHWACKA LOVE STORY AGAIN". I feel bad after though and just play it.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:22 (twenty-three years ago)

No I mean I make sarky comments about friends' tastes more often than I get them.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I didnt like Punch Drunk Love and its not because im a 'townie' its because it was a pretentious artsy fartsy badly acted piece of million dollar poop.

chaki (chaki), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:36 (twenty-three years ago)

My friends say: "Who?" followed by either "And were they in The Face this month?" or "And did anybody care about them in 1983?"

[NB I do not use The Face as make-me-trendy music reference guide. My friends just accuse me of it because they know calling me a fashion victim winds me up]

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:23 (twenty-three years ago)

It depends what you define as friends, I guess my 6 or 7 close friends who live near me aren't people I'd make snarky comments to about music. There is some small overlap in taste and anyway I just amn't bothered really. My best friend likes dance as much as I do. We have occasional arguments where he mocks me for liking vocal versions of songs. When I told him to download "So I Begin" by Galleon, I was talking to him on MSN as he played it, it starts off all filtered and french and he said "oh sounds great already" and of course I was like "yes!" and then 5 seconds later he just says "what the fuck is this vocal doing here???" and then proceeded to berate me for liking the Cosmos vocal aswell.

I might take the piss with college friends a bit more but that's cos they're more likely to hate on something I like or like something I hate.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah they are right, a majority is slow, mellow, acoustic or shoegazey.

"What's the point? I know there's not going to be ONE thing in there that I'd like"

I get this all the time as well.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 14 November 2002 13:01 (twenty-three years ago)

this past week i have got "you like cheesy music" and "turn it down, vanilla ice". both of these came from people with dull taste in music and the latter's reference says more about him than me.
