This entity gets called a "folk supergroup" with a frequency that has gotten tiresome. Each has or had a decent solo career (inside a narrow and almost-invisible nicheworld). They united to record one pretty good record of covers in 1998. They have reunited to tour and I saw them recently.
The appeal of, and audience for, this specific era of folk is sometimes hard to communicate about. Sometimes I tell rock-oriented friends that I listen to folk music and their thoughts tend to go to A Mighty Wind. Peter, Paul, and Mary. Blowin' in the Wind. Puff the Magic Dragon. Michael Row the Boat Ashore.
I start indulging in the Narcissism of Small Differences, saying shit like "No no, that's old-ass Boomer stuff - perhaps you are not aware that there is also contemporary folk music?" But at the same time, if I go to a Richard Shindell concert I am probably the youngest person in the audience not brought by their parents (and I'm 46). So. Anyway.
