I don't know anything about him, but the Manics cite him as being an influence. Anyone?

the Manics are taking the piss.

Max Boyce is a cartoon welshman who sings rugby songs. That's about it really. His catch phrase is shouting "Oggi! Oggi! Oggi!" at audiences, who then shout "Oi! Oi! Oi!" back, like they were at a rugby match. Since Welsh rugby went down the toilet Max Boyce's act has become increasingly sad.

He had a giant leek.

i thought i would eternally lurk, but have been prompted to suspend my reticence after reading these 'leek' and 'ogi' comments - simply to say, politely: there is so much more to Max Boyce than his props and catchphrases. the Manics were indeed influenced by Boyce, as were many artists - Echo and the Bunnymen, Eva Cassiday, Roddy Frame, Momus. Momus reveals his love for Max Boyce here: photos.http://www.demon.co.uk/momus/dailyphoto240902.html

eight years pass...

Cosign that there is much more to Boyce than the comedy Welshman routine. This is probably his greatest song. Love the way he turns the old mining clichés on their head by saying that actually, the mines won't be missed.

one year passes...

I didn't even mention the Manics, but here are my thoughts on Mr Boyce's only UK #1 album:

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Sunday, 18 March 2012 00:34 (fourteen years ago)
