Bronski Beat over Art of Noise for me

groovypanda, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:24 (seven years ago)

Bronski Beat or General Public.
How many installments were there in this series?

enochroot, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)

scraping the barrel a bit here

voted After the Fire. though really I just like the original. their version is...okay

Colourfield had a lot of brilliant tracks. This was not one of them.

frogbs, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:26 (seven years ago)

I prefer the Falco version of "Der Kommissar" but it's such a great song & After The Fire do it justice so I gotta throw a vote to it

xp

cr.ht (crüt), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:28 (seven years ago)

Anyway, I predict the next one will have just as many strong contenders.

Voices Carry

incel elgort (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)

There's a lot of goofy retro-ness & scene-copycat-ness (The "REM" of New England!) on this volume.

Did Smash Mouth ever cover this Colour Field song?

From the YT comments on "Anywhere With You" lol:

I have this on New Wave Hits of the 80s Vol 14 and they cut off 30 seconds of the song. What a rip. This song is great. This should have hit number 1.

I forgot how terrible early RHCP was...

In his 2004 autobiography Scar Tissue, Kiedis recalled, "One day, I got a glimpse of producer Andy Gill’s notebook, and next to the song 'Police Helicopter', he’d written 'Shit.'

Leaning "Tenderness" but forgot how good that Let's Active song is.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:43 (seven years ago)

I love that Let's Active song. And Voices Carry. And Tenderness.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:54 (seven years ago)

And the Bronski Beat song.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:55 (seven years ago)

Same here!

daavid, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:56 (seven years ago)

Plus "Der Komisaar" plus "Sunglasses"

daavid, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)

Smalltown Boy
Tenderness
Voices Carry

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:58 (seven years ago)

I'd say this installment is almost as good as no. 13.

daavid, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:58 (seven years ago)

I don't think I've ever heard any of these songs

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:58 (seven years ago)

I am really, really torn between Smalltown Boy and Voices Carry. But it's definitely got to be one of those two.

daavid, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 18:59 (seven years ago)

Oh man I love so many of these songs, unwisely and unrequitedly.

I totally dig Til Tuesday esp. the Welcome Home album. "Voices Carry" is a fine entry but am not sure it is the winner here.

Would tend to agree with those who prefer the original "Der Kommissar," though the vocal on this one has a lot of quirky straining paranoid charm ("all the CHEELDren KNOW," "I mean sherideswiththeothersinthesubway SINGin'..."

The sudden and completely incongruous popularity of "One Night in Bangkok" is a great memory of that time, but it's really a show tune and is arguably outside the brief of New Wave pop music.

For the lush sonics and palpable mood I am strongly tempted toward "Sunglasses at Night."

Greece is the word (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:04 (seven years ago)

I like a lot of these but I only love "Close (To The Edit)". That blew my mind the first time I heard it. And then the video...

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:05 (seven years ago)

btw, that first Falco album (I think called Einzelhaft?) is a truly great synthpop disc. seems inspired a bit by Bowie, even. after that his music took a different direction, sometimes good sometimes bad, but I don't think he ever matched the debut.

frogbs, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:08 (seven years ago)

"Der Komisaar" is fine but I've always felt it's more of a copy than a cover.

daavid, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:10 (seven years ago)

...like, it was made solely to have an English version :/

daavid, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:13 (seven years ago)

Though this does send me on a Falco trip. this track here was always a favorite. I think it was completed right as he died. Should've been a hit

only one more of these -- is it stupid to do a poll of all the poll winners

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 19:58 (seven years ago)

Not stupid but likely agonizing. I haven't seen any of these where I haven't been deeply conflicted. Would need ranked/preferential voting to really make sense of all my close second places.

NO REGERTS (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:00 (seven years ago)

You are all crazy. After The Fire crushes Falco. The Falco version is positively milquetoast compared to the rip roaring ATF version, which is the definitive Der Komissar.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:00 (seven years ago)

This version of Smalltown Boy is one of my favourite songs of all time:

hair-grabbing ear-grabbing fetishist squaredance caller (Dan Peterson), Tuesday, 1 May 2018 20:59 (seven years ago)

the tune dates back to the 60's, though

'Tenderness' fairly easily.

Til Tuesday, General Public, or a sentimental vote for Let's Active.

The third and final hit for ? & The Mysterions.

After that, can we do a poll of the zero-vote getters? A lot of good songs somehow got shut out.

o. nate, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 00:29 (seven years ago)

Haha, that's a good idea too. I think I will do that first, then the Bridesmaids part and then close it out with the Championship round.

The Backyard. Both for the nostalgia and because it’s still sounds great.

As always when given the option, voted Chili Peppers.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 11:23 (seven years ago)

How on earth have I never experienced that Branigan performance? It is CHOICE.

NO REGERTS (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 12:32 (seven years ago)

What's up with that? Did she have anything to do with it? Is it official?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 12:48 (seven years ago)

I want to say "Voices Carry," but Aimee Mann is such an important singer/songwriter/performer to me that it almost feels too easy and perfunctory. Her songs simply exist on a different level to me personally, so I need to treat this like a highly skewed dataset and discard the highest and lowest values. In which case it becomes a very close race between ATF and Art of Noise, with ATF winning by a nose.

Millennial Whoop, wanna fight about it? (Phil D.), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 12:55 (seven years ago)

I've always kinda wanted to pull together a Halloween costume of the farmer man from the True Men Don't Kill Coyotes video, but no one would get it and I'd have to spend all night explaining myself.

how's life, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 13:15 (seven years ago)

Some time a few years ago every time I heard Art of Noise I started finding them mostly annoying, despite being fans of the folks involved and appreciating what they were going for.

"Voices Carry," given how far Aimee Mann has gone past that it's easy to dismiss it as an easy choice, but every time I've heard her do a solo version of it it's been more and more haunting and beautiful, so I dunno, it's definitely a great song.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 13:29 (seven years ago)

Love "Voices Carry", Aimee Mann is brilliant.
"Smalltown Boy", "...Bangkok" and "Imagination" are great too.

But this one has to be "Sunglasses at Night". #futureman

dorsalstop, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 13:31 (seven years ago)

xp I *hated* Art of Noise when they were first a thing but have found myself loving them more over the years!

Millennial Whoop, wanna fight about it? (Phil D.), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 13:36 (seven years ago)

Learned recently (here?) that Corey Hart had something like 9 top 40 hits! In the US! (Even more in Canada.)

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 13:45 (seven years ago)

one of my favourite terrible songs is this bobby o mash-up of 'sunglasses' and 'westend girls'

i'm surprised to see your screwface at the door (NickB), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 13:58 (seven years ago)

Regardless of the poll outcome, that Laura Branigan song is a walk-off for best post in this thread.
Jersey Al dropped some archeology.

enochroot, Wednesday, 2 May 2018 14:14 (seven years ago)

I don't hear what most do in "Voices Carry." I regard it as the $$ that allowed TT to record Welcome Home and the last album.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 15:06 (seven years ago)

I guess I can understand that position, if you're not crazy about the song, but still, a song about an abusive relationship is an odd way to go out manufacturing a hit single.

Same here. I was a guitars guy then, hence my Let's Active vote, but the sound of that early cut/paste sampling has really grown on me over time.

hair-grabbing ear-grabbing fetishist squaredance caller (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 2 May 2018 17:09 (seven years ago)

After the Beatles and the Ants The Art Of Noise was the first group I felt were 'mine'. Big record for me at the time that one.

I've enjoyed hearing Imagination at a disco once or twice but don't have much desire to hear it outside that context.
