I don't know why but I'm getting an Altogether vibe from that tracklisting.

Matt DC, Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:41 (seven years ago)

no long tracks again, which is disappointing but kind of expected

interesting that "Copenhagen" didn't make the cut. great track but very much in the "classic Orbital" vein. maybe they're going in a different direction

I do wonder what all those bonus tracks are. that's like a half-hour worth of B-sides.

frogbs, Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:45 (seven years ago)

that's a lot of bonus tracks.

mark e, Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:50 (seven years ago)

They're a capella pub singalongs.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 May 2018 20:52 (seven years ago)

Hopefully this is as good as Wonky!

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Thursday, 10 May 2018 21:19 (seven years ago)

Essentially a bonus album is tacked on. 33-34 minutes of "bonus".

octobeard, Friday, 11 May 2018 04:20 (seven years ago)

That's the deluxe version though. 2CD?

StanM, Friday, 11 May 2018 06:51 (seven years ago)

Tiny Foldable Cities is pretty good.

Matt DC, Friday, 11 May 2018 11:00 (seven years ago)

okay this is definitely a lot more developed than the live version

ha ha yes, it's like if Weird Al did an Orbital pastiche-not-parody.

Edit of 'The End Is Nigh' from the new album:

Pretty accurate description from BTL:

Sounds like one of those annoying tracks that are used for YouTube compilation videos.

took me a bit to figure out this was the actual song and not the commercial that plays beforehand

Enjoying this on first listen.

It may be a bit Orbital-by-numbers in places but it's fun and definitely better than the Blue album.

groovypanda, Friday, 14 September 2018 10:51 (seven years ago)

I felt the Blue album was the most "Orbital by the numbers" album they ever released. A very self conscious, nearly self parodying affair (was intended to be their swan song, right?). This one feels like they use their sound palette much more effectively and the songs are a nice balance between fresh sounding and Orbital sounding. I enjoyed Wonky but it didn't really sound like it was Orbital enough to me. Their sound is so iconic.

octobeard, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:42 (seven years ago)

yeah Blue was intended to be a swan song and I think the Hartnolls straight up said it was a gift for the fans. so the similarity was definitely intentional. haven't heard it in ages but I still figure "You Lot" is a banger

as for Wonky, "Where Is It Going?" and "Stringy Acid" definitely had their classic sound. wasn't the latter actually a Brown-era track, or did someone just make that up?

haven't received the new one yet but early reviews sound encouraging. how do the bonus tracks fit into the whole thing?

frogbs, Friday, 14 September 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

on first listen it sounds nice enough, but that's just it, it's nice but not grand in the way that the brown album and in sides were. it's fun, but just feels.. small? compared to them. (as a side note i really like "you lot" but it's like they were trying to go for the emotional impact of adnan / girl with the sun but in a calculated way that shows through)

another thing that stood out immediately - sound design was always one of the things i loved about orbital, that lush otherworldly sound. here it's kinda cold/thin and boringly "modern".

scanner darkly, Friday, 14 September 2018 23:41 (seven years ago)

I've listened to this twice and it's super forgettable and sounds completely phoned in. I don't think I can bring myself to listen to it again.

vision joanna newsom (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 17 September 2018 05:04 (seven years ago)

"Hoo Hoo Ha Ha" is fun and just what I needed yesterday as a break from my Low marathon.

Jeff W, Monday, 17 September 2018 12:18 (seven years ago)

I've made it as far as VisionOnE and this is actively bad. I'm not even convinced it's better than The Altogether.

Matt DC, Monday, 17 September 2018 17:45 (seven years ago)

"Hoo Hoo Ha Ha" is really cracking me up right now

frogbs, Sunday, 23 September 2018 02:44 (seven years ago)

First listen to the album and to Hoo Hoo Ha Ha, what is this £10 casio keyboard trumpet preset bobbins?

this brian cox track is making a good case for destroying the planet.

did laugh at "how does that make you feel?"

frogbs, Friday, 28 September 2018 14:26 (seven years ago)

Brian Cox's speaking voice is so bad.

Matt DC, Friday, 28 September 2018 14:48 (seven years ago)

wow, imagine thinking putting that cunt's voice on an album is a good idea!

ok my final verdict on this is that the main album is a bit hit and miss - a lot of times it sounds like you're listening to parts of epics that don't actually develop - but if they'd found a way to flesh out and incorporate some of the bonus tracks like "Kaiju", "Fun With the System", and "Copenhagen", it would be really damn good. this was also the case with The Altogether though I believe most of the bonus tracks were older B-sides...I'm not sure what the excuse is here. maybe cuz they're more upbeat and melodic, I dunno. think I'll just sequence my own version of this album and make it really good.

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 December 2018 21:00 (seven years ago)

Yeah, this is nowhere near as good as Wonky in terms of composition and production.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 10:53 (seven years ago)

Saw them the other day. It was fine.
