Incline/decline (Ross), Thursday, 17 May 2018 21:47 (seven years ago)

gotta go with duckworth. brilliant storytelling and i'm a sucker for a good origin tale.

alpine static, Thursday, 17 May 2018 22:01 (seven years ago)

Was there any discussion on the black panther soundtrack?
Cuz it’s dope

Incline/decline (Ross), Thursday, 17 May 2018 23:01 (seven years ago)

"Pride"

The Harsh Tutelage of Michael McDonald (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 17 May 2018 23:06 (seven years ago)

This is all one long song imo. Duckworth i guess.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 17 May 2018 23:07 (seven years ago)

"Pride" for me too

At various points last year I would have voted for DNA, HUMBLE, LUST, LOVE, YAH, and DUCKWORTH, yet I voted for FEAR as it has sustained a lasting emotional impact in both its beat as well as its lyrical delivery and message. LUST is a very close 2nd, but its beat is not my favorite.

octobeard, Friday, 18 May 2018 00:43 (seven years ago)

I liked this album less than TPAB when it came out but it’s overall grown on my bc every time a track comes on the radio it’s like the best thing ever

YouTube_-_funy_cats.flv (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 18 May 2018 00:54 (seven years ago)

Yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s as brilliant as TPAB in a high-concept sense, but it’s still plenty brilliant, and furthermore designed in a way where that brilliance is appropriate in way more contexts than some of the more outré stuff on its predecessor. It’s big and pop-friendly but still really distinctive and knotty when you get under the hood.
Which is I think why I voted for “XXX”. On paper the shift from siren-blaring Mike-Will-Does-Bomb-Squad abrasion to a timestretched jazzy Bono cameo should be a disaster, but I don’t know, it’s like Disneyworld, all the wires holding it together are invisible but it feels so structurally appropriate.

Fear

flappy bird, Friday, 18 May 2018 05:28 (seven years ago)

DNA, ELEMENT, LOYALTY, LUST, and, FEAR could all easily get my vote. Probably will go with LOYALTY because Rihanna.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 18 May 2018 05:50 (seven years ago)

Love

they call me melo gelo (Spottie), Friday, 18 May 2018 06:27 (seven years ago)

LUST. Its beat is completely astonishing, for a start

imago, Friday, 18 May 2018 07:07 (seven years ago)

I'm gonna rep for FEEL because it gives me the chills every time. Especially the outburst in the middle and the overlapping lines that float through afterward.

startled macropod (MatthewK), Friday, 18 May 2018 07:11 (seven years ago)

I actually think it's more brilliant than 2PAB high-concept wise, since the narrative concept, while just as strong, doesn't interfere with the individual songs in a "and THEN what happened was..." sort of way, while simultaneously working as a sort of argument. Also love the subtle dialectics of stuff like Pride sounding subdued, followed up by Humble being noisy as hell. His best album, imo.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 18 May 2018 07:12 (seven years ago)

ELEMENT

devvvine, Friday, 18 May 2018 08:57 (seven years ago)

2. DNA.

niels, Friday, 18 May 2018 11:25 (seven years ago)

DNA is undeniable.

OTM.

Still prefer To Pimp a Butterfly.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Friday, 18 May 2018 11:58 (seven years ago)

Could’ve went for lust or xxx tbh

Ross, Saturday, 19 May 2018 05:21 (seven years ago)

FEEL has one of the greatest build up/release I've heard in hip-hop. Also, there is something so hurtful when he sings 'ain't nobody praying for me'.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 19 May 2018 05:48 (seven years ago)

Duckworth

clouds (peanutbuttereverysingleday), Saturday, 19 May 2018 06:44 (seven years ago)

DNA was the first time in a long time I felt compelled to memorize rap lyrics so DNA

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Sunday, 20 May 2018 18:22 (seven years ago)

could also easily vote Duckworth or Fear though

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Sunday, 20 May 2018 18:22 (seven years ago)

DNA with consideration for XXX

21st savagery fox (m bison), Sunday, 20 May 2018 18:31 (seven years ago)

Element and lust would be my runner ups

synonym toast crunch (Ross), Friday, 1 June 2018 16:14 (seven years ago)

No surprise that the rym comments on this are caca
Claiming it’s a sell out album or step down seems really weird and tone deaf for me. Each record should be judged for its own universe and not against some canon trajectory

Voted for “XXX.” but I’m surprised by the low turnout for “LUST.”.

Surprised YAH got no votes

flappy bird, Saturday, 23 June 2018 01:05 (seven years ago)

Element is too low.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Saturday, 23 June 2018 01:46 (seven years ago)

no love for god either. god. damn.

paul mccartney & whinge (voodoo chili), Saturday, 23 June 2018 04:56 (seven years ago)

The low placings for 'GOD.' and 'YAH.' don't surprise me at all. The low placings for 'ELEMENT.' and 'LUST.' do, though.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Saturday, 23 June 2018 10:12 (seven years ago)

God is melodically similar to element

Great track

mind how you go (Ross), Saturday, 23 June 2018 13:20 (seven years ago)

I don't get howanyone could look on the tracklist for this album and vote for the one featuring U2 .

Frederik B, Saturday, 23 June 2018 13:30 (seven years ago)

You mean not for it ?

Anyone play this in reverse? Lamar confirmed it back then that it’s another way to hear the story and the vibe is different. Duckworth makes sense as an opener too

Ross, Sunday, 15 July 2018 20:36 (seven years ago)

He actually released a version in reverse, too -

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Monday, 16 July 2018 05:11 (seven years ago)

That’s the collectors edition yeah :)
My understanding is the reverse version is a life where lamar’s father dies and in the end at “blood” Kendrick dies too? Interesting when artists do things like this, it’s two ways to listen to it - neither is the definitive one

Ross, Monday, 16 July 2018 05:15 (seven years ago)

The final verse in FEAR. about potentially losing everything has always stuck with me

nova, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 05:04 (seven years ago)

that's the one

flappy bird, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 05:54 (seven years ago)

i held the CD version of this my hands for quite a while yesterday at the record store and then ultimately put it down. i kinda want it, though.

alpine static, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 15:43 (seven years ago)

“I’ve been hungry all my life”

Legalize dreams (Ross), Thursday, 19 July 2018 18:57 (seven years ago)

CD version omits parts from the digital, probably worth buying as a piece of the puzzle
