Down on the Street by The Stooges.

You have to play it at top volume, but then how can you turn it up further as the album goes on?

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Hexstatic - Auto.

It goes, BMWOOMP! BWMWOOP! BWAARP! BWOOMP! BWAARP! BWAARP! KER-CRAAASSH! And it's brilliant.

Blackalicious' "Chemical Calisthenics"
Beck's "Novocaine"

nickalicious, Thursday, 14 November 2002 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anyone ever noticed what I've come to think of as the Steve Lillywhite Effect? Take a SL-produced early '80s album like, say, U2's War, and turn it up really loud. There's so much reverb on everything that it never really sounds *loud*, even when it's rattling the windows.

On the contrary, there are certain records--Agent Orange's Living in Darkness, for a roughly contemporaneous example--that sound kinda loud even at low volume.

But I digress . . .

Back on topic: Lightning Bolt's "St. Jacques"

Lee G (Lee G), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"Violet" by Hole. That shit should be at, like, 200 decibels

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Alan, we should get together and destroy our eardrums together. "Super Shine" can come next.

meirion john lewis (mei), Thursday, 14 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I have trouble getting the whole of Loveless up to satisfactory volume levels. That and 'It Was There That I Saw You' by Trail Of Dead.

Callum (Callum), Thursday, 14 November 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Fishbone's "Sunless Saturday"
The Beatles' "She's So Heavy"
Ween's "Exactly Where I'm At"
Ani DiFranco in general is never loud enough.

And on a slightly related note, last time I checked the Melvins held the world record for loudest band ever...damn straight!

nickalicious, Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh what the hell... Suedehead.

Aaron W, Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I was gonna say "Hybrid Moments", but two people already said it!

Kris (aqueduct), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

A Nairn (moretap), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:48 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mandelgroove" and "Rods and Cones" by Blue Man Group. You can't go wrong with percussive bass!

Also "PVC IV".. also by BMG

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything by Elvis - really! Elvis is always a lot better at ear-splitting volumes. Just go and see Peter Webb (north herts based elvis impersonator) next time he plays and you'll see why.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Alec Empire's 'The Destroyer', at least the first three tracks.
'War' by Edwin Starr.
'Scenario' - ATCQ.
'Girl U Want' - Devo.
'Anger (Rare Force 2 meg mix)' - Ryuichi Sakamoto
'Bark At The Moon' - Ozzy.
'I Whupped Batman's Ass' - Wesley Willis.

And lots of songs by the Police and Paperclip People and LFO and Aphex Twin, esp. some of his Polygon/Caustic Window stuff.

Tom Millar (Millar), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe just free association here but I'm thinking the coldcut remix of "Pump Up The Volume"

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 15 November 2002 06:14 (twenty-three years ago)

christoff (christoff), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

all songs are too loud ('cause i'm too old)

Yep, me too! ("Too loud", not "too old.") I'm worried about damaging my hearing - it's gotta last me another 50 yrs or so, and I've already got a bit of tinnitus. I even put cotton in my ears during Motorhead/Black Sabbath and Pere Ubu concerts! But if I'm gonna play ANYTHING at top volume, it'll be something from either Fun House or Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come.

Incidentally, just once I'd like to see a band go against the grain and say something like "This album should NOT be listened to at maximum volume!" in the liner notes. Just once, altho the likelyhood of that is comparable to the likelyhood of an R&B performer not thanking "The Creator" in their own liner notes.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)
