extremely broad topic so more interested in insipid, calculated, artistically compromised efforts, especially by artists who hadn't yet really broken out

so "Song #2" maybe, even though it's a good one imo, but that that heavy riff just wasn't very Blurry

Mott The Hoople : All The Young Dudes.

Alice Cooper - 'Poison'

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Sunday, 27 May 2018 19:21 (seven years ago)

i don't know about "insipid" but "can't explain" was that sort of song, wasn't it?

It was. Townshend said it was done “to introduce us to the charts.” He felt that “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere” better represented “what we’re really about.”

I recall reading that The Move were instructed to come up with a hit and did so, though I can't remember which song ("I Can Hear the Grass Grow"?).

blink-182 - "The Rock Show" and "First Date." Producer told Mark & Tom that Take Off Your Pants and Jacket didn't have enough uptempo songs/potential hits so he challenged them both to go home and write some and they did.

Weezer - "Hash Pipe," "Island in the Sun," "Dope Nose," "Beverly Hills"... just assuming based on RC's spreadsheet strategy in this era of the band.

flappy bird, Sunday, 27 May 2018 20:41 (seven years ago)

Yes those Weezers certainly fit the bill and I don't like any of them!

rip van wanko, Sunday, 27 May 2018 20:43 (seven years ago)

They get exponentially worse as the list goes on imo. "Hash Pipe" is cool, "Beverly Hills" was a pox in 2005.

The most recent LP was good though, maybe they've gotten over it

I'm probably maligning the Dandy Warhols, but always I got this vibe from 'Bohemian Like You'.
