What is the ultimate "one more song" dance song?

It's a bit of a cliche I guess, there are so many obvious choices.

But what would you like to hear more of? What about less of? What was the best last song a DJ played, feel free to give context and go into swooning dreamlike detail!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 10:28 (twenty-three years ago)

You always knew it was the end of the night when 'Come on Eileen' was played.

James Ball (James Ball), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:03 (twenty-three years ago)

No, Donna Summer Last Dance!

Luckily it's not played that much anymore, but for most of this year, Layo & Bushwacka Love Story was the closing track for tons of DJs.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Cosmos aswell!

Is I Feel Love overdone?

Personally when Carl Craig played Jaguar after a long bleepy glitchy type track and those massive strings just came in, it was fantastic. I therefore nominate DJ Rolando-Jaguar for classic status. What a song.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:20 (twenty-three years ago)

'Jaguar' is definitely an ultimate closing track - did a big techno mix once and it made such perfect sense to finish with it tho 'Dark & Long (Dark Train)' is another contender

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Agreed. I think I Feel Love is a bit overdone, though I love it. Emerson played Praise You before and it was pretty cool.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The new Sasha/Underworld bootleg Cowgirl vs Expander also works surprisingly well.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:43 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hi Ho Silver Lining", obviously.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Cowgirl vs Xpander? lawks...

Nightwriters 'Let The Music Use You' is a classic finale...i CAN also see THAT 'Silver Screen' remix bringing things to a suitably epic climax also - and either the Ashley Beedle or Royksopp mixes of 'Weak Become Heroes'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Avalanches 'Live At Dominoes'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

At the end of a typically earbleeding BOSH! BOSH! BOSH! Richie Hawtin set, he dropped a remix of You Spin Me Round Like A Record Baby, with more BOSH!ing over the top of it. It was beautiful.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm always thinking "if i was playing i'd love to put this on last" but wouldn't you know it i'm stuck for an answer. "jaguar" IS a classic but when i saw dj rolando play out he opened his set with it, almost like he was getting it out of the way. "i feel love" could never be overplayed (and, yes, it seems to make an appearance *every* time) but it's not an end-of-nighter. i remember dancing to a 5-hr laurent garnier set and being disappointed when he finished with a fairly non-descript jeff mills "purpose maker" track, decent enough but you want something to sing or hum on your way home in the taxi, don't you? erm, there must be something...is "promised land" too obvious? maybe "garden of love" by sunburst band. depends what type of set you're playing. hmmmm....

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:10 (twenty-three years ago)

similar to Matt DC, i heard that derrick carter has played his own edit of "fame" as 'one more'. a complete *surprise* track is a good thing.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Felix Da Housecat ended with "I Just Can't Get Enough" by Depeche Mode before. It sounds great on a massive system.

I think that record you talk about Matt may be an actual release. One of the DJs here plays it all the time, I'll ask him if I see him around.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:16 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh god, there are so many!

Mark Farina ended an unbelievable set with Tom and Joyce's "Vai Minha Tristeza" which was pretty sensational - it's so evocative and fits well after a set of that sort of music.

Was at a techno night a few years back and the dj (can't remember who it was) ended on Hithouse's "Jack to the sound of the underground" which was utter insanity - people were hanging off the lighting rig.

I've heard Juan Atkins has been known to finish on "We fade to grey". I think that's a little too obvious myself.

I always reckoned ZZ Top "gimme all your lovin" would be great too - it's got those disco drums and is different enough from any dance music ever to be a good ending.

My personal best was finishing a set of '98 speed garage with Ragga Twins "Lock Up". Nice 'n rowdy. I think the last tune should always be a little bit silly - let you down easy. Plus I never remember the sublime ones, only the silly, so clearly it's a better talking point. And it's good to end the night with riot-type activity.

Talking of which, one more great end-of-night record is the Pete Rock mix of "Jump Around".

And the one sublime ending I do remember, now I come to think of it was some unknown chicago loft-party dj finishing up with "Love Hangover". I could just about have swooned. So much emotion, it was like wallowing in custard.

Jacob, Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

A friend of mine has been known to finish with Teenage Kicks alot.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:36 (twenty-three years ago)

It definitely has to be a record that people know, otherwise they leave feeling disappointed. I wonder if Teenage Kicks wouldn't piss a club crowd off though. Maybe not in Ireland I guess, what with the Sharkey connection...

Jacob, Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:42 (twenty-three years ago)

cristina 'is that all there is?' - thee perfect end of the night song.

stirmonster, Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan - yeah, I think might be Hawtin's own mix. I've never heard it before or since though, but at the time it was a complete surprise.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:52 (twenty-three years ago)

there are several 'you spin me round' bootleg's out there. the one hawtin plays is (i think) by surgeon.

stirmonster, Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Clarke in Dublin finished with that thumping Transparent Sounds version of Fade To Grey, which is very good indeed.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Jimmy Radcliffe - "Long After Tonight Is All Over"

Paul (scifisoul), Thursday, 14 November 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

there are several 'you spin me round' bootleg's out there

The Gigi d'Agostino one is a hoot, by the way.

Siegbran (eofor), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:10 (twenty-three years ago)

"Voyager"
"Voodoo Ray"
"Computer love"

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Halcyon is a good'un, too.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:36 (twenty-three years ago)

more:
1)the masters at work remix of aaliyah's "more than a woman"
2)inner life "ain't no mountain high enough" (larry levan)
3)felix da housekatt "kosmik pop"
4)pepe bradock "deep burnt"
5)pet shop boys "west end girls" (12")

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

'deep burnt' is more of an early builder isnt it?

how about 'Gimme Luv' by Alcatrazz, 'Passion' by Gat Decor, 'Positive Education' by Slam and 'Let No Man Put Asunder' by First Choice

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:47 (twenty-three years ago)

that is the beauty of "deep burnt", stevem. it works in either context. imagine, if you will, you've been dancing four hours solid, you're tired, the beats are starting to lose your attention. silence, that beat, the strings, pulling you back up and along until they kind of melt into interference at the end. eyes closed. no?

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:58 (twenty-three years ago)

and "gimme luv" is/was peak time, shurely.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:59 (twenty-three years ago)

fair enough, i'm not really a fan of 'Deep Burnt' though, nice strings but not enough happening for me so I see it more as something to bring in early because of the broadness of the crescendos and the general 'brooding' mood of the track...'Jaguar' is still probably the most apt nominee for me so far

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

i was just about to comment on how many techno dj's seem to play "you spin me right" round,it's almost become a cliche...
as for jaguar, since i have a few jeff mills mixes which start with it,and he played it first when i saw him in dublin recently as well,i always think of it as an opening song...
dj/rupture finished with an instrumental of "are you that somebody?" when he played here the other day...

robin (robin), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm not really a fan of 'Deep Burnt'.

*rubs eyes* *looks again* no, it's still there.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 14 November 2002 16:05 (twenty-three years ago)

its BORING! hahaha

seriously doh, i prefer DJ Q's stuff in that vein ('Urban Hustle' etc. - what about it?)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"jaguar" is classic. I would like to hear the mad mike remix played as the last track.
On a more underground tip, I nominate "I See the Way" by Rozzo, and "Something for the Souls" by ADNY, both on Plastic City.
Also, "The Way" by mod wheel is such a perfect record that it is impossible to follow, so I like playing that last.
There is a version of Silicone Souls "Right on Right on" that has no vocals excepting some guy talking about the proliferation of violence on the streets at the beginning. that works as well.
The mix I am putting together has "Eclipse" by sunkiss at the end. very deep and minimal. sometimes it is nice to go out like that.
However, the answer to the original question is "cookie disco", the Sesame Street remake of "Theme from Shaft". I mix the opening acapella over the breakdown from "I'm coming out".

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 14 November 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

(god am i the only person who immediately thought Stairway? "dance" to me = 9th grade, school gym. how incredibly sad)

jones (actual), Thursday, 14 November 2002 18:49 (twenty-three years ago)

when i ended some mixed sets i have ended with Schneider Tms version of There is a light, Odysseys - If your elooking for a way out and Derek Martins You better go...
i like to use slow songs ás the last one.

Jens (brighter), Thursday, 14 November 2002 19:46 (twenty-three years ago)

stirmonster you always spun me right round w/ "feelin good" by the good doc nina simone - classic

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I always reckoned ZZ Top "gimme all your lovin" would be great too - it's got those disco drums and is different enough from any dance music ever to be a good ending.

Yes! I have a tape of Jon Carter from the Heavenly Social era that ends with this baby (or it might be "Sharp Dressed Man" - can you tell the difference?), the chords stealthily start sneaking in so that just when you're thinking "it's not, is it?" it storms the place and, yes, it is. Those hard rockers always give a good cathartic release, the Chems' ancient NME mixtape uses the Manics' "La Tristessa Durera" to good effect.

Your finisher has to be a classic, though. How about "Rez"?

Mike (mratford), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"Move (You Make Me Feel So Good)" by Moby.. absolute classic!

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Under certain conditions, like when the Supersuckers play Baltimore and a rockabilly steel act opens for them, the perfect song to end a set with is the Cars' "Just What I Needed". Everybody in the joint hoisting bottles aloft, lots of fistpumping, 90% of the crowd screaming the lyrics along with Eddie Spaghetti the whole way through. Yeah.

Tom Millar (Millar), Friday, 15 November 2002 00:14 (twenty-three years ago)

fistpumping, hehe.

michael wells (michael w.), Friday, 15 November 2002 09:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Those hard rockers always give a good cathartic release

jon carter had a track that sampled Foxy Lady - on a loop speeding up and speeding up then it paused and this huge guitar/break thing kicked in - don't know if it was a boot or a release (sounded abit basic) but was fantasticly moving energetic peice - if i had it i'd end with that or my sharona as that kicks ass

james (james), Friday, 15 November 2002 14:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Koenig Cylinders ~ Carousel

gareth (gareth), Friday, 15 November 2002 14:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Disco 2000

jm, Friday, 15 November 2002 15:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Whenever ive played in dublin ive always got the "right" reaction from "Not Forgotten"...... bona fide classique.
dc.

DaveyC, Friday, 15 November 2002 16:19 (twenty-three years ago)

'we're almost there' by michael jackson owns this thread !
*amazing* track with sweeping strings that
build to a crescendo at the *start* and then it goes
all beautiful vocally, with a near-hysterical, barely containg himself jacko almost crying
and yearning the so-near-yet-just...just-out-of-reach
lyric " baby baby don't give up..keep on, keep on !!.."

it's insane !

not really a dance song, but it's fast enough if the mood takes you,
and when i'm finally a dj, it'll be my last song every time, *every* time. (sigh) just thinking about it is giving me the jitters.

i heard david holmes play it once i think, on 'breezeblock' - he's
not soft david holmes.

piscesboy, Friday, 15 November 2002 16:41 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
updates for THIS needed!

piscesboy, Friday, 14 January 2005 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Best last song I ever heard at a rave was Bobby Konders' "The Poem".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 14 January 2005 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

the obvious choice is Blue Monday. Never fails, no matter what the crowd is like.

biznotic, Friday, 14 January 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)
