cool album, had a real fun time going through it this morning
off first listen - "hookers"

too short tho!

nxd, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:17 (seven years ago)

I really like the 'sketches of songs' form, this is very cool. Not sure I can make a choice yet, will have to give it a few more listens.

emil.y, Tuesday, 12 June 2018 15:41 (seven years ago)

This is brilliant but I'm not sure I can choose a favourite bit - it's kind of all one thing

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 18 June 2018 00:01 (seven years ago)

awful album

flopson, Monday, 18 June 2018 03:15 (seven years ago)

she clearly has a really strong visual eye... the music nudges a little close to a wave of music i always feel like i should like but doesn't really move me at all... tyler the creator, dram...there's also an element of theatre/camp that doesn't really work for me... some of the r&b stuff is p good tho

anyway she picked a great gimmick... tho i think you could also view it in a negative light

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2018 03:29 (seven years ago)

why does every song end after 45 seconds

flopson, Monday, 18 June 2018 03:38 (seven years ago)

it makes more sense if you watch the youtube video

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 June 2018 03:44 (seven years ago)

this is my NoName

alpine static, Monday, 18 June 2018 05:53 (seven years ago)

I wanted to like this, but became frustrated with the way every song ended as soon as I started to become interested. I also found the theatre-kid aspects to many of the videos somewhat off-putting. But she clearly has plenty of ideas and talent so I will check out whatever she does next.

monotony, Monday, 18 June 2018 06:27 (seven years ago)

yeah this needs the video to really work

there's a fun unpacking of the use of 'theater kid' in the context of rap to be had

imago, Monday, 18 June 2018 07:28 (seven years ago)

I can't imagine listening to this without watching the video at the same time but the wealth of potential here is captivating

there you have it, the definitive "Whack World" poll

alpine static, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 01:21 (seven years ago)

hahaha omg I really overestimated what a cultural force this was!! This was EXPLODING in my immediate vicinity!!

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 11:53 (seven years ago)

you live in a pretty cool vicinity, then

i actually thought you'd get fewer votes than you got

alpine static, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 22:30 (seven years ago)

she's opening for Lauryn Hill in Philly with MIA and Busta Rhymes but tickets are $60 so I prob won't go :-/

the masseduction of lauryn hill (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)

That sounds like a dream line-up to me!

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 17:48 (seven years ago)

hahaha this poll rules

one month passes...

I just caught up to this and it's pretty fucking amazing, tossing out ideas like pistachio shells

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Thursday, 26 July 2018 13:00 (seven years ago)

Neat visuals, but I can't really imagine listening to this like an album.

I wanted to like this, but became frustrated with the way every song ended as soon as I started to become interested.

when you catch it on shuffle this really makes you miss the album even though the song that just ended still ended this way and you would still feel that frustration if there were another one

j., Thursday, 27 December 2018 02:40 (six years ago)

I hope she never makes a song longer than 45 seconds, and she makes many albums, and her concerts in ten years are 40 minutes long

flamboyant goon tie included, Thursday, 27 December 2018 06:34 (six years ago)

Pairs really well with the Tirzah, as the... wackier version. This is a really good concept, full of ideas and humor, and the artistic visuals are A+. Works rather like an EP to me.

Nabozo, Thursday, 27 December 2018 12:39 (six years ago)

i kinda assumed that this was a stunt for the eventual release of the full-length version of same but I guess the window for that to happen is kinda closing? in any case, this is a lovely way to introduce yourself to the world and i woulda likely voted for hungry hippo.

Whack World and the singles still on high rotation chez moi. Especially "Unemployed", what a jam.

whither the WORLD WIDE WHACK anticipation and early hot takes? Has Philly’s finest squandered her capital?
I still believe. The woman is a genius even if the post WW output has been patchy, she’s had a lot to deal with from what I understand.

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 15 March 2024 07:18 (one year ago)

Well I'm for sure anticipating now

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Friday, 15 March 2024 10:49 (one year ago)

Oh it's out already, rad!

Her writing + delivery are so much like Wayne's at times, it catches me off guard -- e.g. on "Imaginary Friends": When I grow up, I want to hang from the ceiling

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Friday, 15 March 2024 11:54 (one year ago)

I haven’t been able to spend much time with it yet but it sounds like she is BACK. Her vibe in full force, spare and clicky tracks, sweet melodies, drill bars, floating monologues. I love it. I love her.
