the Best Female was, as always, a real struggle - but the categories for Best Male and Best International Female have ironically never been more competetive

i'm sure i;ve missed someone really obvious tho - choose your winners, alternatves (i.e. not on the list), slag the whole thing off as usual or just ingore this post entirely until mid January at the earliest (sorry but i like to plan ahead)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

who i think will win (in same order as above)

CRAIG DAVID (cynical pandering but vindication for last time maybe?)
MISS DYNAMITE (unlucky Sophie)
COLDPLAY
COLDPLAY or MISS DYNAMITE (toss a coin)
THE STREETS
MISS DYNAMITE
EMINEM
PINK (shock decision but there's always one)
FOO FIGHTERS
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE or ASHANTI (toss another coin)
EMINEM
X-PRESS II (though i personally think 'Lazy' is a crap video)
SUGABABES (BPI's follow-up acknowledgement of 2002 being the 'year of the bootleg' maybe)
BLUE
PHIL COLLINS

buh...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

shit i forgot Doves...and they're probably my favourite Brit-eligible geetar band, ack - better replace The Coral with them in the two appropriate categories - shame tho really...

Peerless Pop Pundit, Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I can take a pretty good guess...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

chemical brothers are the new annie lennox.

michael wells (michael w.), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:27 (twenty-two years ago)

nah, they have had an album out this year after all...i think its Robbie Williams - even if he just commits one song to a shitty film soundtrack he gets a gong for Best Male...i wouldve left him off the list but his new single is conveniently released in a week or two, just in time for Christmas, the end of year polls (well, Heart's and Virgin radio's at least) and the Brits

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Bowie. And Broooooce.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

PHIL COLLINS must not be honoured. His new album, testify is radio advertised on Talksport this week - and from the clips it's utter crap, overproduced pop-rock lite with phil wailing inane tosh over the top.

Surely this must be a candidate for worst album of the year?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

His new album, testify is radio advertised on Talksport this week - and from the clips it's utter crap, overproduced pop-rock lite with phil wailing inane tosh over the top.

Um, like all his albums, then?

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

probably, therefore rule Phil out from outstanding achievement award.

Another dud icon Paul "proper guitar music" Weller deserves nowt too. What a snorefeast.

I read this week that recent albums from trad rockers Oasis and Coldplay are amongst the biggest sellers of the year. So unfortunately they maybe shortlisted.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

of course Coldplay will be, not sure about Oasis though - it sold OK but got reception was lukewarm and they're just not considered cool

i think Phil may be up for it cos they're running out of contenders really - Bowie got one already - unless they want to stop giving it to dinosaurs and start valuing the achievements of fresher faces (as they did the Spice Girls a few years back) - but then they'll probably give it to Westlife

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Eva Cassidy is american, isn't she? she was born there anyway.

so replace her with Alison Moyet, who I saw on telly today is making another "comeback" (ha!)

zebedee, Thursday, 14 November 2002 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

oof, maybe we can replace her with Sarah Whatmore

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

what's bextor-boots done this year ?
it'll more likely be faithless than underworld nominated dance wise,
and there's no *way* they'll win anything.
*aqualung* ? they'll win nowt either.
coldplay will win best video no danger (the scientist)
and ms. d a shooin for newbie or even best laydee.
the boy gray a shoo-in for best album nom say i also.

piscesboy, Thursday, 14 November 2002 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

faithless? no album from them this year...not even a single i cant recall - i think its Underworld's best chance of winning the Best Dance award - i really think it will be a close call between them and the Streets - remarkable really as i do love both acts

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 14 November 2002 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Marcello is back on top form in this thread, I think. The inverted commas round "pop" are his masterstroke.

[If it were upto me and Ned, Peter Murphy would have been nominated in best male and best album category]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:37 (twenty-two years ago)

very nonsensical as always - why isnt Bedingfield in the Best Male category? he's sold more records than The Streets...

what the fuck are Jamiroquai doing in Best Dance act? did they actually release an album last year? what about Underworld you tools? they deserve it this time i think...and surely The Streets qualifies for this category too...in fact the distinction between 'urban' and 'dance' is as always, rather pathetic

stevem (blueski), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Sum 41 were robbed :(

jel -- (jel), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

blueski, it's not only the brit awards that do the split, check the bbc music site:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/dance/
House, Trance, Techno, Progressive

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/urban/
Hip hop, Jungle, R&B, UK Garage

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 13 January 2003 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't think you got much to complain about jel, after all your "avril rawk-popstar" is nominated.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 13 January 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

but no-one can really defend WHY house is dance but Garage is urban...i suppose the people who decide these things really do just base it on racial stereotypes i.e. house, trance, techno are WHITE - hip hop, jungle r n b and garage are BLACK...bah

this still doesnt explain why Jamiroquai are nominated tho

stevem (blueski), Monday, 13 January 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

also, why does 'Urban' get 10 nominations and 'Dance' just five...this is so blatantly politically-motivated pandering...oh lets give Big Brothaz a nomination, after all they've had ONE top ten hit, all by themselves...Bev Knight and So Solid also did fuck all last year so why are they there? it strikes me as a rather desperate move by the BPI to try and muscle in on the MOBOs territory and try to show it is making a conscious effort to include more 'black' acts in its nominees...but this is not the fair way to go about doing that surely

stevem (blueski), Monday, 13 January 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

but where does the breakbeat/breaks/nu skool breaks fit in? i.e the type spun by Tayo on Kiss 100

they have their own awards, upcoming: ANNIE NIGHTINGALE TO PRESENT INTERNATIONAL BREAKBEAT AWARD at London’s Electrowerkz on Thursday Feb 27.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 13 January 2003 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

all the artists in that area dont sell enough records for the BPI to consider for their awards basically...and that would be fine except to ignore it completely means the BRITS make a terrible representation of the spectrum of British (dance) music

stevem (blueski), Monday, 13 January 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Thank God Britain's finest voice, Alison Moyet, has been nominated. And thank God her 'Hometime' album will receive further recognition.

There is a God.

But of course, vile Dynami-tee-hee (she really IS only 4 years old, isn't she?) will scoop it. Unfortunately.

russ t, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

bog off Grandad ;)

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Up your 'ole, kiddy. Hometime's a remarkable record - recorded with Bristol's finest in the Massive studios, with assorted members of Goldfrapp, Portishead, Spiritualized - shame age restricts your perception of music. (how old is Sasha? Nick Warren? Tiesto? Teaglia? Vasquez? Are these irrelevant because of their advancing years?)

Stevem... the Brits always cock up the dance award, anyway.... after all, where is Way Out West in this year's nominations - surely eligible and worthy.

Sugababes and Jamiroquai? Where are these people going to dance? Wedding discos?

russ t, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:11 (twenty-two years ago)

do not feed the troll.

Trollwatchers Inc, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard Sugababes, Groove Armada, and the Chemical Brothers at the last wedding disco I was at.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:24 (twenty-two years ago)

..." I see uoi baby, shalkin' that ass...."..... I can imagine. I've done far too many wedding discos in my time..... give me a good funeral anyday. At least they play depressing stuff there, not pop anthems...

russ t, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

did Way Out West release an album last year? it was in 2001 i believe...

obviously i am joking about the age thing - its just funny because many people would half-expect Moyet to get nominated even if she hadnt released an album...such is the desperate realm of the Best British Female award usually

you're too harsh on Miss Dynamite tho...over-hyped yes but she's okay

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Wy out West - I thought it was the first half of last year, after being held in legal wrangles for about 3 years, but I could, and probably am, wrong. Still a cruelly underrated band, though, my favourite 'dance' act by miles.

Don't tink AM's been nominated for female singer since about 88-89. She won the award several times in the 80s though - when she sold millions of records.

I don't think she suffers the Annie Lennox and Kate Bush syndrome (love KB as I do - but she's a lazy mare) whereby they get nominated for going to the shops or something....

So what other music floats yer boat?

russ t, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree that Nick and Jody are under-rated, they were the best producers of 'epic/trancey' dance music around, 'Domination' still gives me a rush when i hear it...they just don't seem as 'on the pulse' anymore, last thing i heard by them was 'Stealth' featurig Kirsty Hawkshaw which was nice but...that was the problem really, it was just nice, nothing else to say about it. this goes for Sasha too - i finally downloaded some of his album last weeks and i love 'Magnetic North' and 'Cloudcuckoo' (both very classic Orbital) and it wouldve been nice for him to get a look-in for Best Dance but these guys both released their albums far too late to cash in when their genre was enjoying more popularity

i've got nothing against Moyet anyway - and i am curious to hear what she's done with Goldfrapp and the like

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Agree about Domination - absolutely incredible record, especially the Kris Needs mix. Brutal.

Also, about Stealth.... weedycompared to their past glories (apart from Gift which I always hated).

I DJ'd in a house party for Jody once... what a collection of records the guy has.

russ.t, Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually it was "watch the way we drop it in a mix timing" etc. I saw Way Out West at Glasto this year cos I wanted to be in the dance tent early for Emerson/Maas/Fatboy's wrestling match. They were pretty good and I enjoyed it but I doubt I'll ever get their stuff. Nick Warren's mixes bore me.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

British single: Atomic Kitten, The Tide is High (Get The Feeling); Gareth Gates, Anyone of Us (Stupid Mistake); Gareth Gates, Unchained Melody; Liberty X, Just A Little; Will Young, Anything Is Possible/Evergreen

If anything demonstrates how completely irrrrrelevant the Brits are, it's this sorry list. WTF?

God, I hope Liberty X win it.

Marcel Gallingez (Marcel Gallingez), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

If it were upto me and Ned, Peter Murphy would have been nominated in best male and best album category

If it really was up to me, I would have woken up the morning the nominations were needed, scribbled down some answers, and gone back to sleep.

"And the nominees are...Hurglefurtz?"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 14 January 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)
