We've never had a thread about Captain Of Her Heart by Double, and that's not right.

Seriously one of the most mentioned songs on ILX to not have a thread about it, nor one about the band that made it. It's easily one of the greatest songs of the 80s and maybe ever, it's surprising how little its been sampled, covered, or remixed. Even the original versions were just the LP mix and the 7".

Can musicologists explain why that plunge on the piano at the end of the chorus is so effective?

Sadly the drummer and keyboardist Felix Haug passed away in 2004.

I hadn’t really thought about it before, but that photo on the single (same one as on the album) seems like just a boring typical band photo, but it’s kurt and felix x 2. same thing in the video.

When we were teenagers, my sister and I used to occasionally try to decide on what the greatest pop song ever written might be. The debate would always conclude with one of us asking, "Hang on, what about Captain of Her Heart?" I'm not sure that I don't still hew to that belief! The recording is touched with a rare kind of magic. I've also always suspected that it was an influence on The Blue Nile during the recording of Hats - cf. the arrangement of "The Downtown Lights".

I just quickly ran through it on my piano, and I noted that the chorus melody is closely aligned to the underlying chords. The progression isn't standard-issue circle-of-fifths stuff, but it's not exotic either - just an emotionally-satisfying sequence of (mostly major) triads.

the piano part has been my ringtone for years and I have no intention of ever changing it

The long instrumental version of Woman of the World (which isn't actually an instrumental) is a fairly important touchstone for a certain kind of DJ. I hear it a lot and I really love it. Every DJ knows what it is but punters rarely ever do.
