'America' is great so long as you mean the otiose cover of the West Side Story number by Keith Emerson's The Nice

imago, Friday, 22 June 2018 09:53 (seven years ago)

That aside, The American Metaphysical Circus is better than most American culture combined so

don't know too much about the other USAs. i like the psychedelic band a lot. but that first POTUS album was a huge part of my middle school years. always thought they were massively underrated & written off as a one hit wonder.

love me some POTUS. i remember watching "Peaches" on MTV after school and i remember them getting a lot of play during Rock The Vote. the first album was so great, i had it on cassette. incredible harmonies and really catchy punk songs w silly subject matter. starting right off with "Kitty at my foot and I want to touch it" the way he turns into David Lee Roth for a second to scream "But that's totally FEATHER PLUCKIN INSANE"

first band i ever was in we were going to play "Peaches". it was a few years after it came out that I got the second album (kinda like w Weezer) and was surprised at how good it was as well. "Mach 5" was lots of fun and so 90s, a punk pop song about Gen X cartoon touchstone Speed Racer. there was also a song about a Brady Bunch episode. i <3 the 90s.

once i heard a live bootleg and it was nice to hear the entire crowd singing along to all the words. i could see this band having a huge cult following.

Well, this is harder than I thought it would be.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 June 2018 00:34 (seven years ago)

Yeah I saw them live probably about a decade ago. Was really fun and judging by the crowd it was almost entirely people who had the album as a kid.

frogbs, Saturday, 23 June 2018 00:35 (seven years ago)

I'm voting America, on the strength of their first three albums.

I just have to take this opportunity to say that the one album by the band United States of America has to be one of the most overrated, boring albums of its era.

listening back to the USA record, i definitely remember "The Garden of Earthly Delights". yeah it's got some good psychedelic pop. lot of dreamy songs a lot of futuristic raves. not Earth shattering or anything i would rate it alongside Gandalf or Silver Apples or something. sometimes these psychedelic albums have some noisey comedy things they should have left off the album (Pink Floyd does this from time to time).

America i just know their one song from hearing it on the radio forever. it totally rips off Neil Young lol. i always wondered if their albums were anything like his.

that "Peaches" video is so masterfully done. the guitar is plugged into a box of peaches. all the camera angles and movements during the ninja battle are perfect. the sound effects are perfect. the way they jump into the tree "Strawberry Fields"-style. the choice of ninjas was perfect too, this was the early 90s, the height of TMNT, Shinobi, Three Ninjas, etc.

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 23 June 2018 01:22 (seven years ago)

"Love Song for the Dead Che" is absolutely beautiful but I need to listen to more America

cr.ht (crüt), Saturday, 23 June 2018 01:29 (seven years ago)

I'm assuming this is going to the USA, but who knows in these heady times. Midn you I know nothing about a band called "America". I do remember the Presidents of the United States of America sucking really hard in those dark days of the 90s. My wife likes Peaches tho so what can you do?

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 23 June 2018 02:15 (seven years ago)

And yes, PotUSoA were the absolute worst of the worst at the time. I hated them immediately.

I love that Janet Jackson convinced Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis to mash up the intro lick to "Ventura Highway" & Satie's "Gymnopedie #1" for one of her songs.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Saturday, 23 June 2018 03:36 (seven years ago)

Holy shit, never realized that that song uses the Satie melody (the America sample is more obvious to me). Mind blown

Vinnie, Saturday, 23 June 2018 04:18 (seven years ago)
