"Sentimental Lady" is a song written by Bob Welch. It was originally recorded for Fleetwood Mac's 1972 album Bare Trees, but was re-recorded by Welch on his debut solo album, French Kiss, in 1977. It is a romantic song, originally written for Welch's first wife. Welch recorded it again in 2003 for his album His Fleetwood Mac Years & Beyond.

We will not be polling the 2003 version.

OK, that video is just creepy.
Why would she want out make out with him when he has cigar breath?
And that scene at the end with 5 chicks vying to light his cigar. It's like he's not sure whether he'd rather be John Denver or Ron Jeremy.

enochroot, Monday, 25 June 2018 00:30 (seven years ago)

Both songs are maudlin.

the song is called sentimental lady; of course it's maudlin

mookieproof, Monday, 25 June 2018 00:59 (seven years ago)

I love Bare Trees. I skip "Sentimental Lady," though.

You lack a will to be merry

The will is willing, the soul is weak.

the 1977 version of this is one of those songs that's in my head b/c i heard it a ton on the radio as a kid, but i couldn't have put an artist or correct lyrics to it until seeing this now.

lol, bob was 32 in that video.

The best is after the (long!) makeout scene during the solo, Bob starts singing again, realizes he's forgotten to hold the mic , and then very slowly brings it back to his mouth

also no mic during the exciting scene at the end where he admires the scarves or whatever those things are that are draped on the sofa

I didn't think it was possible to love Bob Welch more than I already did, but here we are

FWIW, I like the FM version – I came to it later but it has kind of a folkiness(?) to it that I find appealing. But the pop sheen of the version on French Kiss—with the autoharp and Christine McVie bgd vox—is really something special.

Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 29 June 2018 01:18 (seven years ago)

i voted for the FM version, but it does miss the backing vocals

mookieproof, Friday, 29 June 2018 01:35 (seven years ago)

also i enjoyed yr womb version!

mookieproof, Friday, 29 June 2018 01:37 (seven years ago)

four years pass...

listened to the bob solo version tonight in honor of the christine mcv backing vocals

also sang it to my cat, who was unimpressed despite 'you are here and warm/but i could look away and you'd be gone' perfectly describing our relationship

Unsentimental kitty

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 1 December 2022 03:01 (three years ago)

Belated thanks, mookieproof!

And, agreed this was one of the first songs I thought of when I heard Christine died. Not sure this is the greatest version, but this is Bob singing this live with Christine singing backgrounds and Mick on drums: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjH84W_-V1c
