my real favorite is "Bubble" from the bridge album though

Mark Kozelek has such a beautiful voice and he's such an inventive guitarist. it's a shame he act like a damn fool

"bubble" is up there with "san geronimo" and "between days" for me, sometimes it's my favorite rhp song

i could vote for almost any song on this record

my only issue with it is i prefer the full band "new jersey"

realistically probably katy, mistress, or grace cathedral, but I'm voting for Strawberry Hill

also I really wish he'd cash in and do an RHP reunion tour frankly because I just can't abide his solo stuff of the past 7 years or so

would love to hear anthony koutsos drum on a kozelek record again

Tough but Down Through is so amazingly haunting.

Grace Cathedral. My first boyfriend played this record on loop an entire summer. The song as an opener sounds so welcome every time.

I always feel like I'm soaring when it's on.

Jesus, this record (as well as its sister). Voting band-Mistress. Lyrics shocked me when I first heard them ages ago.

I thought his early singing was gorgeous.

I'd love to hear something like this again, it's just perfect sometimes.

I said this already elsewhere, but the latest album by The Amazing is the closest you're gonna get to resurgent peak Koz (though it's closer to early SKM than RHP)

hm this was tough. there's really no superior cut by a mile on this record, imo. 'funhouse' comes up trumps for me -- unique guitar tuning, dramatic, warped.

Mistress gets my vote. Lovely album, but Katy Song has never quite done it for me.

Always arch a brow when someone RIYLs using a (imo, unique) band like say, The Blue Nile, but curious what AMC album you bought? They're two of my top faves, AMC moreso, and lots of common fans between the two. Eitzel's even credited with passing the RHP demo tapes to Ivo at 4AD.

I mean, Western Sky or Last Harbor alone seem like sure conversion tracks.

San Francisco. I was in high school. I worked in two record stores after and I would've never made that rec. It wasn't as bad as someone saying "oh you like Randy Newman, you'll like The Hold Steady."

I think there's more AMC fans that like RHP than the opposite.

I'm going to vote for Brown Eyes because I think it deserves a vote. It's a perfect little thing.

Yeah, I've tried with San Francisco maybe a dozen times and I can never find more than 4-5 songs I can derive enjoyment from. Literally any other AMC album would be preferable as an "in" (though personally I'd recommend Everclear to start)

i was obligated to turn my vote over to my wife who went with katy song. i probably would have gone with band mistress but she's completely responsible for my koz appreciation so she gets the vote.

'ocean beach' never gets any love, but 'moments' from it is really lyrically the most beautiful mark song imo. 'shadows' and 'drop' are deep cuts, too

Things Mean A Lot is underrated

Impressed/glad that "Strawberry Hill" was *up there*.

Delighted that Take Me Out got a vote. I’d shake that person’s hand.

Surprised that Things Mean A Lot didn't get a vote. Glad that Mother and Rollercoaster didn't get a vote.

But "Rollercoaster" is amazing, I would have voted for that if I knew no one else would.

"Mother" is really good too.

Because I don't want to post on the Mark Kozelek thread (this seems the most appropriate place) but in German "Katy Song" would be translated as "Katy Lied."

How exactly was that subtle swirling electronic effect created in "Katy Song"? It’s present for much of the track, but especially audible just after the 4-minute mark.

Last time I really paid attention to Rollercoaster I was a teenager listening on shitty earbuds. Now I’m old and bourgeois and hearing it on a good stereo system. This was not a band from which I expected such audiophile pleasures.

I think it's a phaser effect added to the rhythm guitar, possibly at the mixing stage?
