Katy Song, predictably

my real favorite is "Bubble" from the bridge album though

cr.ht (crüt), Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:34 (seven years ago)

Mark Kozelek has such a beautiful voice and he's such an inventive guitarist. it's a shame he act like a damn fool

cr.ht (crüt), Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:35 (seven years ago)

"bubble" is up there with "san geronimo" and "between days" for me, sometimes it's my favorite rhp song

i could vote for almost any song on this record

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:37 (seven years ago)

my only issue with it is i prefer the full band "new jersey"

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:38 (seven years ago)

it's our duty, as californians

ufo, Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:40 (seven years ago)

realistically probably katy, mistress, or grace cathedral, but I'm voting for Strawberry Hill

akm, Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:44 (seven years ago)

also I really wish he'd cash in and do an RHP reunion tour frankly because I just can't abide his solo stuff of the past 7 years or so

akm, Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:45 (seven years ago)

would love to hear anthony koutsos drum on a kozelek record again

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:52 (seven years ago)

albeit it would also have to not resemble a modern mark kozelek record

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:53 (seven years ago)

I can't imagine he can even be arsed to sing properly anymore (and it's not like he was ever a great singer)

Simon H., Thursday, 28 June 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

new jersey ain't the whole world, but it is the best song on this album

supreme court justice samuel lance-ito (voodoo chili), Thursday, 28 June 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)

Down Through or Katy Song. I haven't listened to this in ages though, I should do that.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 28 June 2018 17:39 (seven years ago)

Mistress. I think Void is probably my all-time RHP track.

campreverb, Thursday, 28 June 2018 17:44 (seven years ago)

Mistress, I think - piano version. Smokey is my all time favourite RHP song.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:00 (seven years ago)

Not prepared to discuss just how close I came to posting RHCP.

The shard-borne beetle with his drowsy hums (Chinaski), Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:00 (seven years ago)

grace cathedral park with katy song and mistress (piano versh) runners-up

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:15 (seven years ago)

Tough but Down Through is so amazingly haunting.

MaresNest, Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:19 (seven years ago)

i also appreciate the tasteful use of reverb on this album

cr.ht (crüt), Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:31 (seven years ago)

maybe i'll go for "funhouse" for its godflesh coda

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:37 (seven years ago)

sometimes I get angry just by imagining how awesome a Koz/Broadrick collab would have been if it had happened 10-20 years earlier

Simon H., Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)

Grace Cathedral. My first boyfriend played this record on loop an entire summer. The song as an opener sounds so welcome every time.

Yerac, Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:42 (seven years ago)

I always feel like I'm soaring when it's on.

Evan, Thursday, 28 June 2018 18:49 (seven years ago)

anthony is now a very successful real estate agent, don't know if he could be convinced to drum again on a regular basis though I almost did get in touch with him for my own band recently.

akm, Thursday, 28 June 2018 19:10 (seven years ago)

i had no idea! he's one of my favorite drummers ever but fair!

buying a communal house for the band?

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 28 June 2018 19:18 (seven years ago)

shouts out to the ozone layer of distorted guitar on "rollercoaster"

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 June 2018 19:18 (seven years ago)

mistress (piano)

J. Sam, Thursday, 28 June 2018 19:43 (seven years ago)

Jesus, this record (as well as its sister). Voting band-Mistress. Lyrics shocked me when I first heard them ages ago.

Mule, Thursday, 28 June 2018 23:27 (seven years ago)

I've probably spent a full day of my life listening to "Katy Song."

geoffreyess, Thursday, 28 June 2018 23:30 (seven years ago)

This version of Katy Song. Yeesh.

I thought his early singing was gorgeous.

I'd love to hear something like this again, it's just perfect sometimes.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 29 June 2018 18:24 (seven years ago)

I said this already elsewhere, but the latest album by The Amazing is the closest you're gonna get to resurgent peak Koz (though it's closer to early SKM than RHP)

Simon H., Friday, 29 June 2018 18:26 (seven years ago)

In Transit?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 29 June 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

that's the one!

Simon H., Friday, 29 June 2018 18:37 (seven years ago)

Or listen to some Desertshore records if you want more of those vibes via instrumentals (Kozelek sings on some tracks on one of the albums too).

Evan, Friday, 29 June 2018 19:05 (seven years ago)

hm this was tough. there's really no superior cut by a mile on this record, imo. 'funhouse' comes up trumps for me -- unique guitar tuning, dramatic, warped.

meaulnes, Friday, 29 June 2018 19:41 (seven years ago)

most obvious poll ever, katy song what else?

Mistress gets my vote. Lovely album, but Katy Song has never quite done it for me.

By the way, thanks to Simon H for his recommendation of The Amazing's album. Terrible name, great record.

the word dog doesn't bark (anagram), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 14:42 (seven years ago)

yeah thanks simon, v pretty album

lowercase (eric), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 15:12 (seven years ago)

I like his Songs for a Blue Guitar-Early SKM singing personally.

campreverb, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 15:42 (seven years ago)

my favourite Kozelek song overall is probably Duk Koo Kim

I really love his vocal performance on this:

(from 2017).

It’s a lovely combination of his contemporary and Red House Painters performances.

Allen (etaeoe), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 17:01 (seven years ago)

I remember deliberating whether to buy another RHP album at a record store once and the salesguy started telling me how they were one of his favorite bands and if I liked RHP then I would really like American Music Club. That salesguy was a filthy liar.

This is opposite of the ilx hivemind. I had to reread it a few times to make sure it wasn't saying the opposite of what it actually says

Evan, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 20:16 (seven years ago)

Always arch a brow when someone RIYLs using a (imo, unique) band like say, The Blue Nile, but curious what AMC album you bought? They're two of my top faves, AMC moreso, and lots of common fans between the two. Eitzel's even credited with passing the RHP demo tapes to Ivo at 4AD.

I mean, Western Sky or Last Harbor alone seem like sure conversion tracks.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 20:25 (seven years ago)

San Francisco. I was in high school. I worked in two record stores after and I would've never made that rec. It wasn't as bad as someone saying "oh you like Randy Newman, you'll like The Hold Steady."

Yerac, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 20:41 (seven years ago)

I think there's more AMC fans that like RHP than the opposite.

campreverb, Tuesday, 3 July 2018 21:15 (seven years ago)

I'm going to vote for Brown Eyes because I think it deserves a vote. It's a perfect little thing.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 21:35 (seven years ago)

san francisco was probably the wrong amc record to recommend

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Tuesday, 3 July 2018 21:55 (seven years ago)

Yeah, I've tried with San Francisco maybe a dozen times and I can never find more than 4-5 songs I can derive enjoyment from. Literally any other AMC album would be preferable as an "in" (though personally I'd recommend Everclear to start)

Simon H., Tuesday, 3 July 2018 23:42 (seven years ago)

i was obligated to turn my vote over to my wife who went with katy song. i probably would have gone with band mistress but she's completely responsible for my koz appreciation so she gets the vote.

'ocean beach' never gets any love, but 'moments' from it is really lyrically the most beautiful mark song imo. 'shadows' and 'drop' are deep cuts, too

Things Mean A Lot is underrated

Evan, Friday, 3 August 2018 18:54 (seven years ago)

Impressed/glad that "Strawberry Hill" was *up there*.

djh, Friday, 3 August 2018 22:21 (seven years ago)

Delighted that Take Me Out got a vote. I’d shake that person’s hand.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Friday, 3 August 2018 22:38 (seven years ago)

Surprised that Things Mean A Lot didn't get a vote. Glad that Mother and Rollercoaster didn't get a vote.

henry s, Saturday, 4 August 2018 02:13 (seven years ago)

But "Rollercoaster" is amazing, I would have voted for that if I knew no one else would.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 4 August 2018 11:23 (seven years ago)

"Mother" is really good too.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Saturday, 4 August 2018 11:24 (seven years ago)

two years pass...

Because I don't want to post on the Mark Kozelek thread (this seems the most appropriate place) but in German "Katy Song" would be translated as "Katy Lied."

Is it because I don't like Steely Dan?

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 27 November 2020 20:16 (four years ago)

two years pass...

How exactly was that subtle swirling electronic effect created in "Katy Song"? It’s present for much of the track, but especially audible just after the 4-minute mark.

Last time I really paid attention to Rollercoaster I was a teenager listening on shitty earbuds. Now I’m old and bourgeois and hearing it on a good stereo system. This was not a band from which I expected such audiophile pleasures.

Melomane, Wednesday, 19 July 2023 22:18 (two years ago)

I think it's a phaser effect added to the rhythm guitar, possibly at the mixing stage?

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 20 July 2023 22:11 (two years ago)
