Tell me them. I want this thread to be the ultimate repository of great songs that are 30 minutes long or longer.

Unrest – “Hydro” (33:23.3)
(more a “groove” than a song?)

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Friday, 29 June 2018 04:18 (seven years ago)

don't overthink the word "song" ... grooves are fine. noise is fine. drones are fine. single tracks are fine. even single tracks made up of a bunch of different songs run together are fine.

the key is run time > 30 minutes and you dig it. the more variety, the better.

and now cheating by referring to my library,

Oren Ambarchi "Sagittarian Domain"
Brian Eno "Discreet Music"
The Velvet Underground "Sister Ray" (live at The Matrix)

Does Metal Machine Music count? Obviously it's split into sides, but ...

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Friday, 29 June 2018 06:25 (seven years ago)

Jethro Tull
-Thick as a Brick
-A Passion Play
(Both are divided in two parts but I'd argue that they count, it's really to fit on the LP sides.)

Apart from the already mentioned Eno albums (Thursday Afternoon & Discreet Music), other 30> Eno's are:
-Neroli (and also New Space Music on the reissue)
-Reflection

David Sylvian did some nice ones:
-The Beekeeper's Apprentice
-When Loud Weather Buffeted Naoshima
-There Is A Light That Enters Houses with No Other House In Sight

Valentijn, Friday, 29 June 2018 06:39 (seven years ago)

One more Eno (any long Eno piece is great): I see that Iced World, the last track on The Drop, is also over 30 minutes on the original CD edition of the album.

Putting in a second vote for “Cassandra Gemini” just so it stands out more
I don’t know if I’ve ever heard another song that maintains its... I don’t know, “song-ness”, sense of continual interesting development along a single path, as well and for as long as that one does. Maybe “My Sweet Lord / Today Is A Killer” by Nina Simone but that’s sub-30mins.

You're all losing so many points on your progress bars (Champiness), Friday, 29 June 2018 18:03 (seven years ago)

Agreed... I'd say Jim O'Rourke's "The Visitor" does the same, despite being an instrumental, and having multiple movements & sections, then again so does CG.

LP sleeve lists 18 songs. Disqualified unless somehow Lovesexy counts.

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Saturday, 30 June 2018 05:10 (seven years ago)

ok - Virðulegu Forsetar is split into four parts "for technical reasons" so technically it might be disqualified too but really is one long piece.

StanM, Saturday, 30 June 2018 05:23 (seven years ago)

Woob - On Earth !

StanM, Saturday, 30 June 2018 05:31 (seven years ago)

ok - Virðulegu Forsetar is split into four parts "for technical reasons" so technically it might be disqualified too but really is one long piece.

of course this counts, it's one piece on four sides of vinyl. 18 different songs with different titles, on two sides of vinyl, is 18 different songs. Virðulegu Forsetar is one piece of music with one title. I might just sit here all night seeing if I can think of different ways to say this.
