I adore 'Against All Odds' so going with that. There's a subtle little drum fill on the chorus that just kills me.

I like a lot of these songs more than "Against All Odds," but voting that one because I always thought the "you're the only one who ever / really knew me at all" line is genuinely sad in a way pop music songs about breakups rarely are. Like, if someone said that to you irl, you'd have to be one cold ass motherfucker for it to not break your heart

of course, I could also see a calculating, manipulative sociopath using that line to great success, so now back to our regularly scheduled nihilism

Agreed -- Phil was clearly going thru some serious shit around that time. Tough times for Phil.

Also a pretty good argument that "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)" is his best vocal performance.

I think it's more like Glenn Frey 80s L.A. noir a la Tequila Sunrise or a less pulpy Indecent Proposal.

The movie has a lot of muted social criticism in it, involving professional sports and ecology. The Jane Greer character has a plan to destroy several beautiful canyons to build houses. The Bridges character is a victim of unfair labor practices. And so on. Sometimes we get the idea we're watching a clone of "Chinatown" -- but not with that jealous triangle. Woods is the villain, so he does smoke, of course. But Bridges and Ward are so consumed with passion, they don't even need to.
