Let's Active

The "Cypress/Afoot" CD has fast become a Holy Grail among CD shoppers. Someone's trying to sell it at half.com for about $125. I recently lucked out and found a copy for about $25.
My question is: How does a CD that was released only 13 years ago become so hard to find? Did they produce only 25 copies or what?

Jim McGaw, Thursday, 14 November 2002 16:24 (twenty-three years ago)

See the White Album thread for your stopgap solution - vinyl copies of all the Let's Active albums are still fairly easy to find, and not that expensive - certainly not $67.50 each. This solution also works for related hard-to-find pop CDs (Game Theory's Lolita Nation, anyone?)

mike a (mike a), Thursday, 14 November 2002 16:28 (twenty-three years ago)

No shit! --Never thought it would be a rarity, but if the market will pay $125, so be it. I'd consider selling mine for that kind of green.

Now, if my extra unopened copy of Velvet Elvis would just become collectable, i'd dish that turd off

christoff (christoff), Thursday, 14 November 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Never underestimate the vast horde of paisley power-pop kollektors. They're unstoppable.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Thursday, 14 November 2002 19:29 (twenty-three years ago)

I should have hung on to my vinyl "Day Dream Nation," but I thought it sucked and I needed the cash.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 14 November 2002 19:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Lolita Nation I mean.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 14 November 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

well, if anybody's actually looking for a vinyl copy of Game Theory's Lolita Nation, i've got one that's in nice condition that i'd let go of.

ken taylor (ken taylor), Thursday, 14 November 2002 20:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Paisley Powerpop collectors are the same people that have pushed the value of the Opal and Rainy Day CDs on Rough Trade up to and beyond US$100..

Let's Active stuff is piss easy to find on vinyl.. the pressing I've got of Cypress is pretty good too..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:20 (twenty-three years ago)

"Cypress" is a weird album for me. I used to make fun of it, then I got to like it a lot (though I still kind of made fun of it sometimes while I listened to it), then I got to not like it. But I have hung onto it because there are moments, however brief, that I like.

Rockist Scientist, Friday, 15 November 2002 01:54 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought that Rainy Day album was mega-rare, but I've seen secondhand CD or vinyl copies on Netsounds for as little as ten quid.

I used to love Cypress but I haven't played it in a decade or so.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 15 November 2002 08:26 (twenty-three years ago)

My LOLITA NATION's signed by the whole band on that tour...I'm not sure I'd part with it, they were really good.

Cypress/Afoot has been reissued on CD!! Supposedly, Big Plans... and Every Dog... have been (will be?) reissued also (with bonus tracks), but Amazon doesn't have them yet.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

More info - all three were released on Collector's Choice:

http://www.ccmusic.com/search.cfm?searchkey=LET%27S%20ACTIVE&bounce=y&searchType=artist

Cypress/Afoot is like the original IRS issue. Big Plans... has two bonus tracks, "Invisible Hills" and an alternate version of "Horizon." Every Dog... also has two bonus tracks, alternate versions of "Bad Machinery" and "Sweepstakes Winner." Hmmm, I'd really like to hear that alt. version of "Horizon"...

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 16 August 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

too bad the Collector's Choise remaster jobs are so crappy, completely tinny sounding. Soundies needs to burn in hell forever.

jack cole wrote: too bad the Collector's Choise remaster jobs are so crappy, completely tinny sounding.

Uh oh - is that a general statement, or have you specifically heard the Let's Active re-issues? The Faust reissue they did sounded great.

Ernest P. (ernestp), Saturday, 16 August 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, i have heard the reissue and it's tinny and undynamic. the remaster is terrible, as was the remaster Soundies did for CC's Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd reissues.

as for the Faust i haven heard it -- i have the recommended records reish so i dont know if they both used the same thing or what.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 16 August 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the original IRS CDs weren't exactly the best mastered things in the world either..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 17 August 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The bottom line: I'm keeping my original CDs and downloading the extra tracks then.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 17 August 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

actually that's pretty much how Collector's Choice reissues sound, Jim -- as they were remastered and transfered to first generation CDS in the late eighties.

Mainly cos I remember him hassling Mitch Easter's songwriting but when I search LA he turns up a LOT.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 30 April 2004 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

classic-ish. there's two great songs on "Every Dog...", unfortunately neither penned by Easter..

my main beef with Easter is his "production"

Cypress/Afoot is great stuff. Should have been, could have been bigger commercially. Tremendous. I've been listening to it since it came out and still love it, unlike most of the pop of the time. I would also recommend the DBs first two records, also on a Collector's Choice CD. Those records were a clear influence on what Mitch tried to do with Let's Active.

Scott McFarland (Scott McFarland), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Scott I don't agree:
Let's Active = emo jangle,
dB's = new wave pop

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 5 January 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Mitch's whole vocal approach is an emulation of Chris Stamey.

How can people dislike Cypress and Afoot? Paisley powerpop? Dear god, it's some amazing jangly pre-twee power pop bullshit. (except Mitch Easter's previous REM stuff). Anyone who disses this truly has no soul, nor ears. "blah blah blah productin", screw you technical nerds. you have no soul, you just love machines and ugly poor fitting t-shirts of stuff noenes ever heard of

burt_stanton, Thursday, 25 September 2008 02:40 (seventeen years ago)

Coincidentally, Mitch Easter is playing some shows around NC and Georgia as Gravel Truck - an all Let's Active cover band. Details at: http://www.myspace.com/mitcheasterband

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 25 September 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

That Gravel Truck show in Atlanta--I'm there.

Apropos of not much since it's been reissued I was told the general reason that Cypress/Afoot was so damned expensive was that it was released back when the labels had to manufacture everything in three formats--LP/cassette/CD. It was still the early days of the compact disc so far fewer of them were manufactured in comparison to the other configs. And since it was just little old Let's Active we're talking about, never really a big group as good as they were, the CD was never re-pressed. Total copies, then, on CD between '84 and '04: 3,000 and maybe fewer if those all didn't sell. There're still a ton of CDs like that from the mid- to late-80s never re-pressed and never reissued that get ridiculous money on auction sites. A couple others I made three figures on before they were reissued were the first Kenny Chesney CD on Capricorn and Jack Bruce's Songs For a Tailor.Lots of Paisley Park titles like that too.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 22 July 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)

Sad. I know some folks who are good friends with Mitch Easter and all his fellow travelers, and this on top of Scott Miller's death has really shaken them up.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 22 July 2013 14:11 (twelve years ago)

And both suicides, right?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 22 July 2013 14:43 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I don't know if that was ever publicly confirmed in Miller's case but that was the general supposition.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 22 July 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)

It's shaken me up.

I never met Faye Hunter. By all accounts, she was a kind and generous person. I never even got to see the Mitch/Faye/Sara version of Let's Active. The one chance I had (1983, opening for REM), I couldn't get a ride to the show. Stupid but typical teenage story. However, it's impossible to overestimate how much those records meant to me and still do. I still remember hearing "Room With A View" for the first time, the way the wistful verses crashed into the choruses.

So along with Scott Miller, that's two musicians from the same general circle, both gone too soon, both likely unaware or unwilling to accept how loved they were by people they never even met. If anyone out there is thinking about suicide, they might want to consider this.

mike a, Monday, 22 July 2013 14:51 (twelve years ago)

You got inside knowledge on Miller? Dudes his age do keel over from heart stuff, y'know.

Three Word Username, Monday, 22 July 2013 15:15 (twelve years ago)

Scott Miller was not confirmed as such, but it's always a bit conspicuous when someone relatively young dies suddenly with no cause of death listed. He had been openly battling depression, and I believe in the first few hours suicide was mentioned on a few Miller forums, but apparently taken down either at the request of or out of respect for the family. Given how rampant the rumor, and the absence of clarification, one can only sadly surmise at this point.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 22 July 2013 15:34 (twelve years ago)

My friends who knew him know the details, but it was clear nobody wanted it talked about and I haven't asked.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Monday, 22 July 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

OK, will file under "very strong rumor".

Three Word Username, Monday, 22 July 2013 15:51 (twelve years ago)

Scott Miller committed suicide, it was confirmed by friends to me at least.

akm, Monday, 22 July 2013 16:48 (twelve years ago)

Was also confirmed to me by someone who was in contact with him.
