Two Rank and File threads, 11 posts in total, none in 12 years. They've hit a dry patch.
A friend was giving away some albums he didn't want, so I took Long Gone Dead and a few others, not really sure if I already had it. I didn't--just the first one. It's surprisingly okay--"brilliant"'s a bit of a reach (sorry Long Gone Andy, whoever you are), but "Sound of the Rain" and the title track are both good. Actually thought it was a female voice singing the latter, but I guess not.

There was a more general thread that I think Scott S started that had some mentions of Rank & File. I have Long Gone Dead and like it quite a bit, I do prefer the Dils though. Sound of the Rain is an old Dils song they redid.

2002 Andy was right about Sundown at least, it really is brilliant. I'd put it alongside the Dils' studio recordings, which I guess is saying a lot since their eight (8!) song non-live discography is pretty much perfect.

Yeah the Chip tunes make me swoon. They're also the ones where the band's version of country music has the most in common with the Meat Puppets'. Were the Kirkwoods fans of the Kinmans?

There was a Hinman career overview in the last Ugly THings.
I thought the Meat Puppets were way too maverick to consciously sound much like another band. Could it be the other way round?
& I thought i had a cd of Rank & File material that I'd picked up late 90s. Not sure if it still plays.
