YT//ST robbed as usual

imago, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 12:35 (seven years ago)

I always find out about one or two great albums via this list, and this year the Pierre Kwenders is jumping out at me. I already liked the Caesar album but I had no idea he's canadian

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 July 2018 12:41 (seven years ago)

the Jeremy Dutcher record is sounding really cool so far as well. I think this is one of their best shortlists.

partner

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 14:14 (seven years ago)

The Kwenders and Caesar albums were two of my favourites last year. My (very mild) stanning for the Kwenders never got any traction here so I'm glad to know someone is discovering him. Definitely need to check out a few others here (Partner, apparently!), and imago what is YT//ST?

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 July 2018 14:18 (seven years ago)

Merci

rob, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 14:18 (seven years ago)

Only heard Partner, but that was one of my favourite albums last year.

jmm, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 14:29 (seven years ago)

I know there are some Alvvays skeptics about but ultimately I landed on Antisocialites being a step up from the debut -- better paced and more muscular.

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 July 2018 14:32 (seven years ago)

Man, U.S. Girls are my favourite band, so,

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 21:54 (seven years ago)

Yeah, this is US Girls by a considerable number of miles.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 22:51 (seven years ago)

I guess I need to listen to US Girls!

(I actually haven’t heard ANY of these records)

Police, Academy (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 23:05 (seven years ago)

JF, thats a huge recommendation for the US Girls, considering you are how I'd heard of the Kwenders!

bedraggled vorticist (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 18 July 2018 23:12 (seven years ago)

That Pierre Kwenders album is quite enjoyable, but yeah.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 23:20 (seven years ago)

I really hope Partner get to perform at the ceremony. "Everybody Knows" in advance of legalization would be fun.

Josee's dad must be proud.

jmm, Friday, 20 July 2018 22:34 (seven years ago)

Partner > US Girls.

Matt DC, Saturday, 21 July 2018 10:11 (seven years ago)

I went to relisten to the Partner album because I couldn't remember it tbh...then I saw the cover and all my memories of it came right back. Blech. I'm not just ambivalent about it. I remember viscerally aggressively disliking it.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 21 July 2018 20:12 (seven years ago)

i love the alvvays album, and the us girls one rules as well

Karl Malone, Saturday, 21 July 2018 20:25 (seven years ago)

I can't imagine not loving "Play the Field" tbh

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 21 July 2018 21:41 (seven years ago)

Yeah, this is the kind of post-Weezer cash-in crunch rock that I hated in the 90s and still do 20+ years later.

Why do I like Charly Bliss and not these goobers? Charly Bliss isn't one long audible *wink*.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 21 July 2018 21:53 (seven years ago)

They strike me as very earnest! If goofy.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 21 July 2018 21:54 (seven years ago)

They're basically Nerf Herder but more LGBTQ positive.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 21 July 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)

TERF Hurter

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 21 July 2018 22:09 (seven years ago)

Partner topped my ballot, but I have since been all-in for Hubert Lenoir. That album is incredible.

So Dutcher won. Interesting. (An interesting choice and an interesting album): https://polarismusicprize.ca/blog/jeremy-dutcher-has-won-the-2018-polaris-music-prize-for-the-album-wolastoqiyik-lintuwakonawa/

The nexus of the crisis (Sund4r), Tuesday, 18 September 2018 14:24 (seven years ago)

I have never successfully predicted the winner.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Tuesday, 18 September 2018 14:49 (seven years ago)

I used to have a good nose for what would win, and called the winner almost every year 2008-2013 once the shortlist came out. But I didn’t call Tanya or Buffy or Lido or Jeremy at all, tho I’m thrilled they won. I do wonder how amazing US Girls need to be to win, sometimes

As soon as they bring some trad. indigenous musical elements.

I'm guessing 2010 was not one of those years, unless you actually managed to guess Karkwa would win.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 15:07 (seven years ago)

No, I thought it would be Caribou that year. I love the Karkwa album a lot but Swim is just *cough* era-defining or something

fgti is for (flamboyant goon tie included), Tuesday, 18 September 2018 19:47 (seven years ago)

tbh i thought it was a big letdown after andorra

imago, Tuesday, 18 September 2018 19:55 (seven years ago)

I know I know you've said this many times

Despite my own involvement on Our Love I thought it was a letdown after Swim and was surprised (and pleased) at its positive reception
