this Sugar & Spice EP is wonderful: dream-pop that could have come straight out of 1991, completely derivative in sound but so vividly melodic.

lots of little mostalgic flourishes like the Robin Guthrie style droning guitar on Bad Guy or the way her voice slides up and down on Sugar & Spice like Harriet Wheeler, I can already hear the "it's all been done before what's the point" criticisms but I think there's a charming effortlessness on show.

boxedjoy, Friday, 20 July 2018 09:24 (seven years ago)

lol this year's Shambhala thread is about 40% Hatchie content alone.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 20 July 2018 12:18 (seven years ago)

yeah i've been enjoying her tracks the last few months, heard one in the coffee shop and was like, cool, this cocteau twins revival is going even deeper than i thought. her hooks are good too is the thing. bought the EP from the label at a record fair recently and they assured me a full-length was coming!

dreadful choice of artist names though, given how much of the potential audience is already familiar with waxahatchee. might as well have called herself "leigh bells," "tea projectors," "royer," or "eever ray."

This is a total Jeff Porcaro. (Doctor Casino), Friday, 20 July 2018 13:12 (seven years ago)

I bought this digital EP but have yet to listen. You're right, the name feels market tested, precision-focused on the demographic seeking a middle ground between Waxahatchee and Halsey.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 20 July 2018 14:08 (seven years ago)

i saw her live last week and she was excellent despite not having that much material yet

ufo, Friday, 20 July 2018 14:18 (seven years ago)

I’ve found that if you listen to the EP twice in a row it makes the perfect dream pop album.

Tim F, Saturday, 21 July 2018 02:50 (seven years ago)

^ I should do that. I've come back to "Sure" about a gazillion times since it was the Shambhala thread, but other tracks are yet to stick with me in the same way.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Saturday, 21 July 2018 02:59 (seven years ago)

I was delighted to learn in said thread that she doubles as a member of Babaganouj and is the vocalist on "Would You Like Me?," which is the best Velocity Girl homage I've ever heard and a song I listened to a thousand times before I even knew there was any connection.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 21 July 2018 03:11 (seven years ago)

market tested, precision-focused

everything about this feels this way, but that doesn't mean she didn't write herself a perfect and timeless song in "Sure"

alpine static, Sunday, 22 July 2018 07:56 (seven years ago)

I think my favourite is “Bad Guy” for those “Just Like Honey” vibes.

Tim F, Sunday, 22 July 2018 08:05 (seven years ago)

Guys, her name is Harriette. I believe Hatchie is just a nickname. Maybe her friends and family are secretly a focus group?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 22 July 2018 11:44 (seven years ago)

That is a disgusting nickname for Harriet(te), lol

imago, Sunday, 22 July 2018 12:18 (seven years ago)

it's a very australian nickname yeah lol

ufo, Sunday, 22 July 2018 13:02 (seven years ago)

my comment that it feels focus-grouped has nothing to do w/ her name.

alpine static, Sunday, 22 July 2018 19:56 (seven years ago)

and btw i love it/her. i guess what i'm saying is it's very polished for being so early in her career, and slightly lacking in personality, too. reminds me of early Tame Impala, which felt like scientists had genetically engineered a psych-pop band in a lab.

alpine static, Sunday, 22 July 2018 19:56 (seven years ago)

that's kinda what I love about it though, those big Katy Perry-style choruses are what makes her stand out from the sea of similar stuff

boxedjoy, Sunday, 22 July 2018 19:59 (seven years ago)

I was basically taking issue with korny's observation:

You're right, the name feels market tested, precision-focused on the demographic seeking a middle ground between Waxahatchee and Halsey.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 05:08 (six years ago)

Another great song! This is one of my most anticipated albums of the year.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 05:17 (six years ago)

she was pretty good just now! played two other new songs from the album: "unwanted guest" which was similar in style to "without a blush" with a darker, almost nine inch nails-ish verse and then a huge shoegaze-pop chorus, and "her own heart" which was a ballad in 6/8 that made me think 'shoegaze taylor swift'

ufo, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 11:17 (six years ago)

also charles from babaganouj was her lead guitarist and he was comically dramatic at that

ufo, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 11:37 (six years ago)

Loving the new single. I think it's my favorite so far! That guitar in the verse is fierce! Also love the bass.

daavid, Monday, 4 March 2019 17:46 (six years ago)

"Without a blush" = sunshine Curve! this is glorious

daavid, Saturday, 20 April 2019 03:19 (six years ago)

this song was on the jukebox a minute ago and i couldn’t tell if it was hatchie or the ‘90s.

it was “ode to my family” by the cranberries. i have never heard this song as far as i can remember.

i also think about natalie imbruglia a lot when i listen to this band.

wow, love the sound on this. got some real NIN/industrial qualities folded into the ravey/housey/whooshy/Cocteau soup she was already serving up.

Doctor Casino, Friday, 22 April 2022 15:13 (three years ago)

yeah "the rhythm" really goes for it with its industrial madchester thing

ufo, Saturday, 23 April 2022 23:27 (three years ago)

idk if anything on here quite matches "stay with me" or "obsessed" but it's solid and maybe a little stronger than the debut overall, the new industrial edge to the guitars really helps

ufo, Sunday, 24 April 2022 00:38 (three years ago)

I don’t really hear industrial - more Curve (especially Cuckoo), though I guess if you were casting around for a contemporary reference point then the last Halsey album might be one.

I feel like the melodies Hatchie concocted on the first EP were so indelible that it has placed her in something of a quandary ever since. She occasionally gets back to that level (“Obsessed” being the best example probably) but both the first album and now this one mostly have less memorable melodies - but the flipside is that that maybe liberates her to explore sonically, and I can’t help but nod approvingly at almost every choice she makes on this new one. It’s a lovely sounding album.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:05 (three years ago)

Should clarify that “less memorable melodies” is only relative - there’s some fantastic melodies on both albums.

Tim F, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:11 (three years ago)

it's really just "the rhythm" that's not far off nine inch nails in places but the harder-hitting guitars on it show up a fair amount elsewhere too

ufo, Sunday, 24 April 2022 09:53 (three years ago)

was only sorta interested in hearing this til the radio played "The Key." so good, it's the future Cranekiss foretold.

This has been a very dry year for music discovery for me. Nothing new that's come across my desk has really landed for me. But I'm listening to Hatchie's Giving the World Away and deeply enjoying it. I had never heard her before and this is really up my alley.

peace, man, Tuesday, 18 October 2022 11:35 (three years ago)

Yeah, she's working with an exciting blend of styles. Sometimes it's Natalie Imbruglia or Heather Nova, sometimes Curve, Lush, Cranberries, Happy Mondays on the title track for sure...so much more. A lot of artists that I love, but wouldn't necessarily listen to back-to-back.

Hatchie was a lockdown algorithm discovery for me. I came fully onboard with The Rhythm, which I still think is one of her best. So I was really hoping that she was going to go further down that 'rave music with Rickenbackers' Curve / Chapterhouse route

New single sounds more jangle-pop, really digging into the heavy chorus effects. I will listen to that Sundays / Ivy / Ocean Blue jangle guitar sound forever TBH

Etherwave, Wednesday, 3 September 2025 12:45 (three months ago)

That's a great single, but like you Etherwave I was expecting her to go in that direction based on Nosebleed from the deluxe of the last album. This feels like a real return to the sound of her first EP. She's so good at it this sound.

Speaking of Rage, these were her guest-programmer selections last night:

(Though it's endlessly frustrating that the programmer commentary itself is one of the few ABC things that's *not* re-playable on demand AFAIK. I could watch people taking about their favourite music 4eva, even if legal considerations mean the videos have to be excised longer term.)

Time to listen to the longplayer...

boxedjoy, Sunday, 9 November 2025 16:53 (one month ago)

I am fascinated by this playlist. There are some really "uncool" choices that seem to actually make so much sense, and I've not even heard the new album yet

boxedjoy, Sunday, 9 November 2025 16:55 (one month ago)

Not a fan of the album, sadly. My least favorite of what she's put out so far. And an extra layer of disappointment is that my favorite track ended up being "Lose It Again", which I thought was just OK.

daavid, Sunday, 9 November 2025 19:37 (one month ago)

Those are some excellent and very surprising choices. Love that she picked the Bryan Adams & Mel C video. I still go back to that one a lot. Inspired Kylie choice and nice to see Case Of The Ex in there too.

I'm into the new album even though it's definitely not as instant as her first two. The opener really reminds me of Boards Of Canada, but I haven't figured which song too. Carousel is the clear highlight. Some big Four Calendar Cafe vibes there and on a few of the other songs.

kitchen person, Sunday, 9 November 2025 22:02 (one month ago)

Yeah, vaguely Cocteau Twins (absent from playlist shockah) vibes is likely what I'm semi-consciously seeking and it seemed to deliver lol. Quite a bit of it has cohered into actual pop songs with some promise of durability, so I was content enough after 1.5 listens.

Thanks boxedjoy for the Youtube link! Looks like it was posted as I was reviving the thread. (She got a pretty tight edit! Collected commentary sometimes exceeds half an hour of rambling.)

Fed up with your constant and uniform motion (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Sunday, 9 November 2025 23:42 (one month ago)

I like the first few Cocteau-heavy songs on the new album, especially "Carousel", but I start to zone out after that. Will listen a third time, but I don't think this one is as good as what she's done before, sadly
