Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

She's been hanging out with the vampire Lestat!

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Her eyes are always so vacant!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

yep. pretty vacant.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, my problem with the whole 'she's so genuine' tact is that she always looks so completely fireless and half-hearted...

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, it's not even a good SNARL!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

she was interviewed recently in rolling stone -- she's 18 or 19 but has the intelligence and tact of a 13 or 14 year old.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:26 (twenty-three years ago)

We haven't even mentioned her name this thread. I managed to read the whole thread before the picture loaded, and... well, it could only be one person, couldn't it? To quote her PR "Wow! This chick really rocks!"

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but she's knocked EW's type all askew!! she snarled "greg kinnear's nude awakening" right out of its little spot!

jones (actual), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

My semi-erect penis has written better songs.

nickalicious, Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

The RS interview is hilarious...

http://www.rollingstone.com/features/coverstory/featuregen.asp?pid=1258

Q: Do you consider yourself a feminist?
A: I don't really know. What exactly is that?

Aaron W, Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Somwhere Pink's going "I'm on the cover of Entertainment Weekly this week! Hooey Hooey, Let Me Get Me Baby! oh, wait"

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Q: Why Alanis? Is it a Canadian-pride thing?

A: Yeah, definitely. And Jagged Little Pill? I loved that she would curse in her songs and be so honest and blaah! People would be like, "Oh, my God, as if she's doing that!" But she was so successful, and she was like, "No, I'm doing this." And that's so cool.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Better than Amy Phillips!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:39 (twenty-three years ago)

b-but Aaron, you didn't quote what happens next.

Q: Basically, it means you think women and men should be treated as equals.

A: Musically, girls can rock. Fuck that, who says they can't? My brother used to be like, "You're a girl. You can't go hunting or fishing." I'd be like, "You're stupid." And we'd get into a huge fight.

The interview makes me like her.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

(are you people insane?? i just hummed the beginning of that complicated number and every picture on my wall suddenly went slanty - you are playing fast-and-loose with dangerous punky powers beyond all comprehension)

jones (actual), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

I saw this and I was like, you know, like, know what I mean? But then you were all "no way" and I was like "yes way", so Bobby and I went to the mall instead.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Obligatory 'chastising for mocking teenaged girls' post.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:48 (twenty-three years ago)

I know Sterling! It was so hard to pick just one thing to quote... I almost posted the whole interview.

I love how she uses "fuck" and "shit" to underscore her in-your-faceness. It's almost as though you can hear the conversation she had with her publicists before the interview...

"This is for Rolling Stone. You can use curse words in that magazine. We think it would be a good idea."

"Really? That's like so crazy! Whatever you guys say!"

Aaron W, Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Obligatory 'I would never mock teenage girls, just incoherent ones' post.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Interviews with her remind me of like Nell or something where somebody with no particular consciousness of media-culture gets thrust into the spotlight.

Or like that "it could happen to you" movie with the lottery ticket.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:59 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah her naivete is like a glitch in the media system which is ironically probably the most punk thing about her. it's almost surreal when she's like "shhh don't call me punk because, you know, that throws some people off". hopefully her publicist doesn't start 'correcting' her.

Honda (Honda), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:03 (twenty-three years ago)

(okay if you guys all just started writing diagonally to scare me, it's not funny stop it)

jones (actual), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Q: Basically, it means you think women and men should be treated as equals.

A: Musically, girls can rock. Fuck that, who says they can't? My brother used to be like, "You're a girl. You can't go hunting or fishing." I'd be like, "You're stupid." And we'd get into a huge fight.

aka like every conversation me and Wheeler ever had on ILM, and no one was too happy about THAT now were they?

Sterling you have fact proven my theory that you are obsessed with childish girls. YOU CANNOT RUN NOW.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

i have still not heard an avril song!! i feel totally divorced from pop cult these days...

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Okay Ally either you just called yourself a childish girl and therefore implied that I am obsessed with you, or er... I think that's what you just did.

Anyway, ewwww.... Avril is Icky! It's not like I like her or anything, coz that would be so gross!!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"Q: Do you consider yourself a feminist?
A: I don't really know. What exactly is that?"

That's actually not a bad response...Of course, what she said after that proved that it wasn't as witty as it was uninformed.

S, Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Just wait until the next voice article anyway, it'll make your life much easier.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

''i have still not heard an avril song!! i feel totally divorced from pop cult these days...''

I have, and it was by accident.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

She looks all Leelee-Sobieski-gets-an-anal-probe in that picture.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:31 (twenty-three years ago)

as seen in the rough cut of Eyes Wide Shut.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, download "Sk8er boi" somewhere. I think you'd dig it.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

Still though, I can only remember her name as "Anvil Lasagne"

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:43 (twenty-three years ago)

(any random avril record is better than any random kubrick film)

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

If only there were anything random about a Kubrick film.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:55 (twenty-three years ago)

both avril and kubrick are pre-planned. nothing is improvised and therefore not worth your or my time.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on guys lighten up!!!!!!!

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

julio you will love norman mailer's movies!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:09 (twenty-three years ago)

julio you will love jackass!!

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:11 (twenty-three years ago)

''julio you will love norman mailer's movies!!''

did he make movies or are you trying to screw my brane up?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I realized this the other day: "Complicated" would not sound out of place AT ALL on a pop-country radio station. The melody and lyrics are very much there; all it would take is a little production tweakage and some country signifiers.

Make of this what you will, but think about it...

Clarke B., Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"SK8R B0I" RULZ. FUKC ALL U H4T4Z.

N0RM4N PH4Y, Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

both, julio!! it's win-win!!

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard her. The only place I've ever even seen her name is on ILM!

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Country radio hates Canadians.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:28 (twenty-three years ago)

She sells well to teenagers, because frankly, teenagers are morons.

Also, I like how since every single thread on ILM has to have that one post that shoots down the sacred cows, someone actually went out of their way to say "KUBRICK SUCKS." That took some effort.

David Allen, Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I never knew Entertainment Weekly was so in touch with punk culture!

Curtis Stephens, Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Duh, they gave "Dirty" best album of 1992.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

How does one strike a "peeeoouuse" exactly?

Venga, Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Jess, when you do hear either of her songs you'll be rendered utterly confused as to why people keep saying the word "punk" in association with her. SweartuGaw.

Dan I., Thursday, 14 November 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Sum 41 with a female singer = best band in the history of the universe!

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 17 November 2002 23:05 (twenty-three years ago)

jel is OTM

i saw in the window of a second hand record shop on saturday this notebook thing, with a blue cover, that had "AVRIL LAVIGNE" scrawled on the label on the front cover in what looked like black marker pen

what is this? some fancy promo packaging for one of her CDs maybe? (if so, which one?)

zebedee, Monday, 18 November 2002 13:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Helltime Producto is some sort of male version of me, I think.

Ally (mlescaut), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally, if that were true you'd be 6'4" and 268 lbs. And you'd do this dance that I like to call "Halloween Boogie On The Hot Plate" whenever you'd get a case on Anchor Steam in ya.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:34 (twenty-three years ago)

How the hell do you know that I'm not and that I don't?

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:36 (twenty-three years ago)

En Guar...wait, no, I mean, Touchè. Or Too Shy, but I 'm not really into Kajagoogoo that much, or, at all. So, yeah, Touchè. Wait, no, I don't like Happy Hardcore either, so...

Ok, you might be my size, and you might do my dance. There. Everybody to the limit.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Kajagoogoo RAWKS. And if I met a girl that was 6' 4" and weighed 268 lbs. I might just lose it completely. I mean, uh, and if she knew how to cook. Yeah.

Tom Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:11 (twenty-three years ago)

And if I met a girl that was 6' 4" and weighed 268 lbs. I might just lose it completely.

Are you so sure about that?

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:37 (twenty-three years ago)

she's been listening to sonic youth's recs (the 80s stuff) (check the ending of that track of hers on the focus group)

nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Nicole, that picture made me lose it completely (where "it" was "the lunch I just ate").

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:26 (twenty-three years ago)

my god, who is that?

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:50 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't know, but I think I want to have sex with her.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:53 (twenty-three years ago)

she is suppsedly the largest woman on the world - from Holland - 7'4" and 320 lbs

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 18:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Those are implants, right?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

(Really really big implants?)

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks to the wildly amusing turn this thread has taken, I can no longer hate Avril. DAMN YOU ALL.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:13 (twenty-three years ago)

That woman could shit Avril and not notice it.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Ally wins.

Aaron W, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I really want to know why someone that tall is wearing FIVE-INCH HEELS.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:56 (twenty-three years ago)

that's a big five inches dan perry

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Not the first time I've heard that...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Five-inch heels on eight-foot woman = "pumps."

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Avril Lavigne: I naturally didn't work out who she was for a good while. But then I eventually heard her on R2 and saw her on TOTP. I like her a lot. OK, like most girl pop stars, she looks great. But I like her 'Complicated' 45 a great deal. I suppose it's one of my favourite 45s of the year.

'Skater Boy' (sp?) I'm not so sure about. I've only heard it once. I think it was Mayo playing it, on evening R2. It seemed gimmicky. I don't know, though - Ewing has a point: I remember the intro sounding good.

It's all OK with me.

Avril Lavingne is actually from my neck of the woods. A few years ago, she was singing Shania covers at country fairs. Now she's pretending to some sort of punk legitimacy because her record company is dressing her like a distaff Stroke.
Sad.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Friday, 22 November 2002 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

dude, pop star in dressing up in funny costumes shocker!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 22 November 2002 04:13 (twenty-three years ago)

maybe too in your face for newsstand buyers:

And now they've got more fuel for their ire: Time Inc. insiders said the newsstand results for one of the first major issues that Tetzeli oversaw - with pop tart songstress Avril Lavigne on the cover - were fairly disastrous.

... If those numbers hold up, that would make it either the worst- or second-worst-selling EW cover on the newsstand this year.

The bit above the pap_er's nam_e on the front cov_er (I forget what this bit_s called - "fluff strip" is what I thin_k it should be called) read_s "Avril Lavigne - is she for real?" It occur_s to me that feat_ure writ0r_z in nation_al newspap_ers might produce some_th_ing more interest_ing more often if they got off their arses & did some work, rather than trawl_ing teh inter_web for all their idea_s. EMILY CARTWRIGHT, Monday, 1 December 2003 14:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i went to bed last night and to assist the onset of sleep i started thinking about what Avril's new single might sound like - only what i ended up with was actually quite good in my head and i was thinking of writing it out and sending it off to The Matrix of something

this morning it doesn't sound half as good but still better than the new Blinky

stevem (blueski), Monday, 1 December 2003 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you just insert your entire body into Andrea the Giant when you have sex with her.

Chris B. Sure (Chris V), Monday, 1 December 2003 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this thread for some reason. I don't like Avril but I love ILM talking about Avril

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm disappointed, a little, by the new single. I still like the Avril voice and 'tude, but I'm afraid Avril-minus-Matrix = Britney-minus-Max; still good, but no longer the bomb-ola.

morris pavilion (samjeff), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Songs about not giving up the coochie are great--like Trina, who constantly boasts of her very high standards. Avril and Trina should do a record together (produced by Lil Jon).

"Don't Tell Me" is pretty enjoyable I think--positive and chunky like CCM without the amateurish graphic design.

adam (adam), Thursday, 4 March 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

That interview is still pure genius!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 4 March 2004 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I would love to hear Avril do a rocked-on-out cover of Nick Drake's "Fly." Just because.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 7 March 2004 15:29 (twenty-two years ago)

remember nothing about the new avril single. the new trina single on the other hand is very much about her high standards.

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 7 March 2004 15:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Ooh shit what's the new Trina single called?

adam (adam), Sunday, 7 March 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Leaving You (Big Ol' Dick). the lyrics are like rap fan fiction porn.

scissors (Honda), Sunday, 7 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow! That's my favorite kind of fan fiction porn!

adam (adam), Sunday, 7 March 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I gotta disagree about the new Avril single, the music's her most generic yet ("I'm strumming, I'm rocking, I'm strumming, I'm rocking") and the lyrics are absurd - she sings about peer pressure like an afterschool special, and she never mentions under what circumstances or to what kinda boy (or girl - no, shut up, libido) she WOULD give it up, which makes it sound even more like adults writing a song for a teenager to sing that parents will approve of.

The fact that this song and its chorus - "Did you think that I was gonna give it up to you this time?" - will haunt me at the gym for the next few months makes me unhappy.
