the locust:classic or dud

this is my first post. i have been reading this message board for a while now and i figured it was about time for me to join in on the fun.first things first,my name is john im 16(sixteen) years old and i live in milwaukee,wi and create hip hop music under the name juiceboxxx.my musical tastes are pretty broad, and hard to pin down,so i wont bore you with them.i know you dont care.but my question:

the locust:classic or dud?

classic, i say, although i cant listen to them for extended periods of time. even though they are basically just a glorified anal cunt with sci-fi noises, they basically started (or brought into the relative mainstream) the whole grindcore as mod/vulcan phenomenon, and employ clever live show tactics and get the award for most creative merchandise. maybe this question has already been asked, if so, sorry.

hi, i think they are, as they say: CLASSIC.

(but i like them for all the reasons you don't (not to mention most of your reasons for liking them provide mucho fodder for their many, many enemies.))

THE MUSIC:
i CAN listen to them for extended periods of time, i think their music IS and SHOULD BE the focal point on this argument. they ACHIEVE EXACTLY what they set out to do... AND MORE. the band's ability to stay razor-sharp and tight in the most chaotic circumstances and to make GRIND tunes that are at once touching AND frenetically beligerent. the new drummer GABE is my secretest crush AND an uber-godhead/maniac drummer that is far beyond compare in any band that will be mentioned in this thread. Hypnotic and arhythmic... yet catchy and fun/funny (OMG, a sense of humor!!!).

EVERYTHING ELSE: Who cares, go see them live and watch them play and listen to the sounds. although there is something to be said for camoflage vinyl.

THEIR CRITICS: Worthless AND blind/deaf... the arguments are paper-thin and do not address anything critical to the music.

also: john

do you know of NEON HUNK? They are from your hometown and they are quite amazing... I saw them twice this past summer and was blown away.

gygax!, Thursday, 14 November 2002 21:57 (twenty-three years ago)

The Locust rule. For starters, adding DEVO to grind was a brilliant move. Secondly, they are INSANELY good at what they do. Tight, clean, total control, and of course, stupid fast. They're my favourite band to dance to. The only problem I have with them is that they're so good live I can't listen to them at home that much because it's a tease. And they live on the wrong coast. (I did a parody site about them y'all have probably seen already.)

Dave Fischer, Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:02 (twenty-three years ago)

that site is amazing

juiceboxxx, Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:13 (twenty-three years ago)

i sorta saw them at gilman in oakland with Lightning Bolt (yay!), Arab on Radar (boo!) and Hella (ooh!)

we all went outside after getting demolished by the LB crowd and i only got to see Locusts setting up. seriously the scariest band i've ever seen. the bug masks, skinny mesh biker short outfits and clear guitars would have made for a fun show, but my ears were already bleeding

JasonD (JasonD), Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I spent four days on the road, and caught three of the Locust/Arab/Bolt shows last summer. Truly a terrifying combo.

Dave Fischer, Thursday, 14 November 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

sadly, you can't really discuss the locust as they're up there with gabba, anal cunt and melt banana as bands that are just rated and whoever doesn't get it may as well leave the hall.

I'm absolutely sorry, but I can't stand this band for a few reasons, some of which are superficial.

--The music bores me. I can't distinguish between their songs, nor do I care to try to. It all sounds like thrashy beats, noisy guitars, screaming and horror show keyboards.

--They're totally style over substance. They do nothing musically revolutionary, have terribly pointless lyrics, and again, their music does nothing to counterbalance that. There are plenty of bands who have more amusing nonsense lyrics (Arab on Radar, for example) but also have interesting music to back it up.

--The fans are jerks (with a few exceptions.) I've seen them twice, once at a festival in Purchase, NY and once in Worcester during the Oops! tour (though I sat outside for most of their set). I tend to avoid dumb moshy hardcore shows exactly because of the behavior the fans display. Yeah, it's really cool to punch people--if you want to do that shit, get up on the football field (as Ian Mackaye might say.) Add to that the black hair/white belt/scathing look scenester crowd and it damn near makes me want to vomit. Most music that carries that baggage repulses me--see also: Glass Candy, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The White Stripes

Definitely a dud.

Ian, scroll up to the first answer, last paragraph. kthxbye.

THEIR CRITICS: Worthless AND blind/deaf... the arguments are paper-thin and do not address anything critical to the music.

I won't say there's anything wrong with what they play--they're all fine musicians and are good at what they do. I just think what they do is boring as hell.

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 15 November 2002 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

haha yeah, that should shut him up!! QED, motherfucker!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 15 November 2002 04:22 (twenty-three years ago)

>>>i think their music IS and SHOULD BE the focal point on this argument.

But why? When one might reasonably infer that when...

>>>they ACHIEVE EXACTLY what they set out to do...

They play shows in bug suits?

vahid (vahid), Friday, 15 November 2002 05:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I was at both the Purchase and Worcester shows and thought the moshing was really light, as it normally is for them. There were no Romulans at Purchase. (They did come out for Worcester though.)

Dave Fischer, Friday, 15 November 2002 06:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Ian's a big silly-head.

Dave Fischer, Friday, 15 November 2002 09:58 (twenty-three years ago)

they are the stretchheads with a keyboard. they're ok. nice cover of "flash" like it a lot

bob snoom, Friday, 15 November 2002 18:46 (twenty-three years ago)

There's moshing at Locust shows?!?

Kris (aqueduct), Friday, 15 November 2002 18:58 (twenty-three years ago)
