the locust:classic or dud?
classic, i say, although i cant listen to them for extended periods of time. even though they are basically just a glorified anal cunt with sci-fi noises, they basically started (or brought into the relative mainstream) the whole grindcore as mod/vulcan phenomenon, and employ clever live show tactics and get the award for most creative merchandise. maybe this question has already been asked, if so, sorry.

(but i like them for all the reasons you don't (not to mention most of your reasons for liking them provide mucho fodder for their many, many enemies.))
THE MUSIC:i CAN listen to them for extended periods of time, i think their music IS and SHOULD BE the focal point on this argument. they ACHIEVE EXACTLY what they set out to do... AND MORE. the band's ability to stay razor-sharp and tight in the most chaotic circumstances and to make GRIND tunes that are at once touching AND frenetically beligerent. the new drummer GABE is my secretest crush AND an uber-godhead/maniac drummer that is far beyond compare in any band that will be mentioned in this thread. Hypnotic and arhythmic... yet catchy and fun/funny (OMG, a sense of humor!!!).
EVERYTHING ELSE: Who cares, go see them live and watch them play and listen to the sounds. although there is something to be said for camoflage vinyl.
THEIR CRITICS: Worthless AND blind/deaf... the arguments are paper-thin and do not address anything critical to the music.

do you know of NEON HUNK? They are from your hometown and they are quite amazing... I saw them twice this past summer and was blown away.

we all went outside after getting demolished by the LB crowd and i only got to see Locusts setting up. seriously the scariest band i've ever seen. the bug masks, skinny mesh biker short outfits and clear guitars would have made for a fun show, but my ears were already bleeding

--The music bores me. I can't distinguish between their songs, nor do I care to try to. It all sounds like thrashy beats, noisy guitars, screaming and horror show keyboards.
--They're totally style over substance. They do nothing musically revolutionary, have terribly pointless lyrics, and again, their music does nothing to counterbalance that. There are plenty of bands who have more amusing nonsense lyrics (Arab on Radar, for example) but also have interesting music to back it up.
--The fans are jerks (with a few exceptions.) I've seen them twice, once at a festival in Purchase, NY and once in Worcester during the Oops! tour (though I sat outside for most of their set). I tend to avoid dumb moshy hardcore shows exactly because of the behavior the fans display. Yeah, it's really cool to punch people--if you want to do that shit, get up on the football field (as Ian Mackaye might say.) Add to that the black hair/white belt/scathing look scenester crowd and it damn near makes me want to vomit. Most music that carries that baggage repulses me--see also: Glass Candy, Pretty Girls Make Graves, The White Stripes
Definitely a dud.

I won't say there's anything wrong with what they play--they're all fine musicians and are good at what they do. I just think what they do is boring as hell.

But why? When one might reasonably infer that when...
>>>they ACHIEVE EXACTLY what they set out to do...
They play shows in bug suits?

It’s with heavy hearts that we have to share the passing of Gabe Serbian on April 30th, 2022. This world will miss Gabe as a friend, family member, musician, and artist.
