So based on my detective work so far, I think it's Isle of Wight '69 (but I'm not 100% sure), and I think it's not the Who. My best guess as to acts from the '69 Isle of Wight is that it's Free, but there are a ton of bands on the lineup I wouldn't be able to ID on sight and that there aren't a lot of good photos of on GIS.

not sure it's Free, unless they did a different set in different outfits. does look like them though.

― piscesx, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:19 (seven years ago)
def not the Who
― Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:20 (seven years ago)
are there any other festivals it could be? what else was that big (besides Woodstock)?
I think it's IOW because of this photo, which is def Pete Townshend at IOW:
https://cdn3.volusion.com/shxxj.yvech/v/vspfiles/photos/ASCPG-RC19-2.jpg
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:21 (seven years ago)
but idk, I guess other big festivals from the same time period on flat rural land could wind up looking very similar
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:22 (seven years ago)
I'm inclined to say it's not Free, only because that looks like a double-bass-drum setup, whereas Simon Kirke only played single-bass-drum kits.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:26 (seven years ago)
Looks like the thumbnail pic refers to this cover

― piscesx, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:27 (seven years ago)
yeah, it seems not to be Free
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:28 (seven years ago)
Top photo has crash barriers, Pete Townshend photo has a picket fence.
― home, home and deranged (ledge), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:28 (seven years ago)
yeah just noticed that in fact
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:29 (seven years ago)
now that I look at it, that is kind of a weird kit set up. You think the second bass drum is not visible/on the right, with the snare in the middle?
― Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:29 (seven years ago)
Yeah drum setup was a whole other mystery. I was also guessing second kick not visible.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:31 (seven years ago)
'three shillings.. fortnight'.. so a British advert, could be a British band?
― piscesx, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:33 (seven years ago)
Yeah, I assume the other bass drum is hidden from view.
xps
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:35 (seven years ago)
it's def a British advert, which means the festival is probably British. I suppose other candidates besides IOW could be:
Hollywood Music FestivalPhun CityKralingen Music FestivalGlastonbury
― Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:37 (seven years ago)
those were all in 1970 and I think all the sites are rural...?
― Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:38 (seven years ago)
That Little Richard cover looks like it's dated May 27th 1970, probably not a help tho
― MaresNest, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:49 (seven years ago)
Since the example magazine cover doesn't have a British artist, maybe not a British festival either - at least no reason to assume.
― saddest kamancheh (bendy), Friday, 3 August 2018 15:57 (seven years ago)
Kralingen looks like the field was surrounded by woods, so it's not that one
― Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 15:58 (seven years ago)
maybe not a British festival either
Lot of UK festivals in the 60s/70s anyway...
http://www.ukrockfestivals.com/index.html
― home, home and deranged (ledge), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:03 (seven years ago)
it's gotta be '69-'70 given the style of the band + the cover issue image
― Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 16:04 (seven years ago)
ok that narrows it down to about 30 in the uk alone!
― home, home and deranged (ledge), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:08 (seven years ago)
yeah I'm assuming it has to be 69/70
now all we need is a list of all british (and maybe american/canadian) bands that played at one of the dozens of British festivals and had long hair. Fuck.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:10 (seven years ago)
the stage lights and crash barriers are the most distinctive things for comparing to other stage photos.
― home, home and deranged (ledge), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:10 (seven years ago)
That issue is number 59, dated 1967.
― piscesx, Friday, 3 August 2018 16:11 (seven years ago)
It looks like the drummer may be playing with no front head on his kick, if that helps at all. Although I'm not even sure of that from the picture. Unusual move on a giant festival stage.
He also seems to have some kind of contraption that keeps his hi-hat stand in place by anchoring it to the kick, never seen one of those before.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:12 (seven years ago)
xp no Issue 59 is 1970https://www.wolfgangs.com/magazines/rolling-stone-issue-59/magazine/RS59.html
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:13 (seven years ago)
this is true but finding shots from behind the kit/looking out from the stage seems kinda hard with GIS - you google a lot of these festivals and all you get is shots from the crowd and handbills
― Οὖτις, Friday, 3 August 2018 16:13 (seven years ago)
don't think it's Free?

THE FLOCK
I mean, it is right? Drummer has a dark tanktop, jumping longhair frontman with white sleeveless shirt and tight pants, frontless double kicks
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:26 (seven years ago)
Right, I think I've got it. First of all, from the crash barriers and distinctive monitors at the front of the stage I worked out it's the Bath Festival, 27-29 June, 1970. Here's Canned Heat:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VFTOdmt1HWw/hqdefault.jpg
... and the band in the photo is the Flock on 28th June, 1970.

.. check the leaping singer and the drummer's outfit.

― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:28 (seven years ago)
Apparently it was a Jerry Goodman (of Mahavishnu Orchestra) outfit. I had never heard of them before although I certainly know who he is. Want to check them out now.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:28 (seven years ago)
lol "Can't have no violins in a ROCK AND ROLL poster!"
I'm sure they're on one of those Rock Machine Turns You On type albums - but one of the tracks no-one played.
― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:30 (seven years ago)

So they were actually his pre-Mahavisnhu project.
Drummer Ron Karpman doesn't seem to have done a lot outside of The Flock

... their track is a horrible late 60s version of "Tired of Waiting for You"
― Father Ted in Forkhandles (Tom D.), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:43 (seven years ago)
I only know who the Flock was because WXRT in Chicago used to talk about them like they were some incredible great lost '60s band a la Moby Grape. Didn't actually hear any of their music until today, and it sounds exactly like you'd imagine the Mahavishnu violinist fronting Blood, Sweat & Tears to sound like.
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)
I don't know what UK copyright/persona law was like in 1970, but it also kind of makes sense that they'd use an anonymous photo of a lesser-known band if there was otherwise a risk of paying for use of someone's likeness in an ad.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 16:52 (seven years ago)
welp this band is awful

^^^ lol, exactly how I remember them. I don't remember how I ended up owning their Dinosaur Swamps album as a kid, but I sold it haven't thought about it since. Cool cover though.

Wikipedia sez their saxophonist, one Tom Webb, "participated in" the recording of Bitches Brew, "but [his] performance was not recorded."
So...either he was at the session but his mic/channel was mysteriously turned off, or Tom Webb is a damn liar.

he brought sandwiches

so it took me a sec, but it looks like those pics may have been taken at nearly the same moment, with the latter (non-RS one) reversed (unless the drummer is left-handed).
