Craig David attacks 'black racism'

Craig David could be huge if he'd drop his white guitarist? What the hell? Does anyone here really think this is holding him back? That he'd sell 4x as many records with an all black band? Who gives a shit?

Although something weird may be going on as all of the pop music boy singer fans I know don't seem to dig his music. They love Justin or Usher or whatever but tell me Craig David is wack. What's that about? And how about the new album? I dig it. It's got Sting on it.

B-b-b-but Sting is on the Sugababes record too...

Is he trying to show his integrity or is he trying to sell as many records as possible? He can't do both.

the line "They can take their black guitarist and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. It shouldn't matter what colour or creed you are" suggests the former. where's the ambiguity?

The problem with this is that I'm entirely unconvinced black audiences in the U.S. would give a shit one way or another, much less the pop audience at large. What seems to be coming from his label runs more like a frightened marketing line: "oh crap, he's half-white, and British, and a little poncy, we need to shore up his blackness-factor." I don't understand why all these news stories are spinning it the way they are -- i.e., implying that black Americans actually don't like him because of his white guitarist. (How would you even know the guy is white until you'd already bought your Craig David tickets and they came onstage?)

If you're lucky enough to have seen Craig David's guitarist strum poignant acoustic licks at the top of a mountain in some rainforest while Craig gives an impassioned reading of "Bootyman" for MTV, you know he's white.

I'm surprised they put him in the video! (I've also never seen a Craig David video on MTV.)

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 15 November 2002 18:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I mean, not surprised because of the white thing, but more because I always imagined a Craig David video would just be, like, Craig in a tank top driving cars and flirting with cute girls.

In fact! I realize now that I have seen half of one video of his, and it was precisely that, except that he could reverse time and go back and not spill drinks on people.

You obviously don't realize the underlying spiritual import of "Bootyman."

It was an MTV special, not a video. Craig in the jungle. V. funny moment, anyway.

That Craig David Music In High Places special was really funny. Everyone basically looks dumb in those things.
