Van Halen and David Lee Roth videos directed by Pete Angelus

I just this morning learned that these coked-out, cartoonishly hyper-exaggerated hellscapes were all the product of a single creative visionary. But of course they were. I hope the extraterrestrial presence known as Pete Angelus eventually got around to meeting some human beings and observing how greatly their actual behaviors and interactions differ from the imaginings he set to video.

poll of the year

embed of "yankee rose" is missing the "gimme a bottle of anything... and a glazed donut... to go" scene which takes it over the top for me

princess of hell (BradNelson), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 19:27 (seven years ago)

"Panama" used to be one of my favourite videos ever. Helps that it's my favourite song among those, but the video itself was ridiculous in the best possible way.

I had retroactively come to think of this thing Angelus did as a style that was common to videos of that era. And while it's true there was some of that same super-heightened cartoonishness going on in other videos ('Yo Little Brother' by Nolan Thomas comes immediately to mind)...

...it kinda just clicked all at once this morning that the prime examples I had in mind were, well, the stuff I polled here.

But I'd love it if y'all had some other examples to throw into the ring.

(I'm pretty sure 'Panama' doesn't actually fit the template I'm describing but I figured it would be unfair to exclude something that so explicitly fit the purview of the poll.)

Awww man, somebody who doesn't work in an office where video is disabled needs to find the correct version of 'Yankee Rose'. The 'glazed donut' opener is precisely what prompted this thread!

ZZ Top's Eliminator-era videos feel like they belong in this sub-subgenre

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 19:44 (seven years ago)

and Huey Lewis and the News' "If This Is It"

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 19:44 (seven years ago)

Ooh, good call on the Eliminator vids, for sure.

nowadays when my kids are asking for a story and I can't think of one I just recount the "plots" of 80s videos

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 19:47 (seven years ago)

"so this kid works at a gas station, and everybody treats him like garbage, until one day three skinny scantily clad women pull up in 1933 Ford coupe..."

I could have sworn there was a bit in DLR's book about his solo videos' radical color correction (or lack thereof).

Panama is the best song, but Hot For Teacher is the most classic video. Having them as kids seemed so crazy at the time, and Eddie's solo is all-time.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 31 August 2018 03:53 (seven years ago)

I swear, if Michael Anthony had used his overdriven live sound in the studio, he'd be recognized as a bass genius for Hot for Teacher alone. It's not their best track, but it's their best video and their most Van Halen track.

with Phil Hartman performing the voice of Waldo, the video's protagonist.

Angelus definitely wrote his own wikipedia article

Many of David Lee Roth's quips came from the tongue of Angelus (Note the opening of California Girls: "Thank Heaven for Little Girls, Maurice Chevalier, 1958" "And some of the other sizes, too Pete and Dave, 1985".) Roth, with whom Angelus had a falling out after managing his solo career for six years, failed to acknowledge Angelus' work and partnership in his memoir.

one year passes...

Y'know, it only took a few dozen consecutive, perspiration-soaked hours watching the highly-recommended YT channel/crucial cultural archive '80s Commercial Vault before I realized that the hyperexaggerated Roth/Angelus vision of late 20th Century Boschian horror was pretty much omnipresent in the coke-addled dusk of the Reagan era. This shit is equal parts deeply comforting and psychosis inducing.
