Siesta S/D/RFI

From what I've read on this board and elsewhere, I get the feeling that I ought to check out a selection of abovementioned label's catalogue. Any recommendations on what I should try? As general guidelines, I can mention that i DO like the classical indie sensibility (tweeness not mandatory, not disqualifying), cleverness (I don't even mind if it's blatantly overdone), wit, eclecticism, incogruity. I'm NOT too fond of overtly loungy, bossanovey, jazzy stuff.

Alternatively, sensibly ignore my prejudices and just mouth off about what of Siesta's output you love or hate.

As in the house label?

Well, I think the DJ Spun "Get On Up" single is classic, especially the Mixed:Media mix.

Well no, I don't think so. I'm talking about theSpanish pop label. But thanks for replying, anyway.

Search - the 3 Free Design compilations. That's all I've heard of their output. Looks a bit twee tho' from what I remember (from checking out their website).

I quite liked the happy balloon album.

But when it comes to Spanish indie pop I much prefer Elefant records.

I produce the current '...if' and 'Reverie' stuff through Siesta, so obviuosly that's what I'd recommend (Death By Chocolate, David Candy, Lollipop Train, Maria Napoleon, Mild Euphoria, Songs For the Jet Set 2000 & Dream Drops);-) Of the other recordings Margo Guryan's is a 'must buy'...& Rita Calypso is charming, in a Mary Hopkin sort of way. Vigil is '60s-John-Barryesque (& must have cost a fortune!) & Edwin Moses an indie take on Curtis Mayfield.

are you mike alway?

songs for the jet set is a great compilation. and both pedro vigil's projects (vigil and edwin moses) are really charming.
oh, and then there's la buena vida, of course. one of the best spanish bands of the moment.

>are you mike alway?

No, but I do work with Mike; he's the conceptualist.

Hunky Dory - love it!

la buena vida is amazing they went from a jangly little pop band to this grand cinematic experience(hallelujah! with the prague orchestra was also likely very expensive), beaumont is fantastic, as are all the reverie comps especially 'simulataneous ice cream'. happy balloon is the crooner and is great. all three scarlet's well records are great, the bien ep reminds me that more bands should copy the cocteau twins, minema does the new wave pop thing better than my favorite, um the ramon leal compilations are wonderfully pretty. they definitely have a label manifesto i think, lots of sophisticated, loungey pop(beaumont are the current torchbearers really) and they always have really beautiful packaging. maybe jez can explain how they can afford the lavish packaging? are they independently wealthy, do they really sell that many records? just that the records all sound relatively well produced meaning they weren't done on the cheap and the packaging is exquisite. oh and i forgot hunky dory.

By the way, Jens, is that you...ex-Bristol?

Jez (Jez), Friday, 15 November 2002 17:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Digipaks, coloured vinyl etc. etc. - your guess is as good as mine...but I'm not complaining :-)

I heartily second Margo Guryan and the Jet Set comps (which I got on the American Jet Set label). I'm not sure which Louis Phillipe titles are on Siesta. I prefer his earlier 90s and 80s records over some of the more sober recent things I've heard. Anything by Red Sleeping Beauty was really good, no matter how you feel about twee. I liked Swan Dive's Words You Whisper album quite a lot, too.
