write-in vote for the Nausica of the Valley of the Wind soundtrack
― josh az (2011nostalgia), Saturday, 8 September 2018 00:13 (seven years ago)
both of these are incredible and i refuse to choose
kawai’s patlabor 2 soundtrack also so great

you have to choose, dammit
it's called TAKING SIDES not TAKING THE EASY WAY OUT

thank you both for the related recs - i have seen nausicaa but barely remember it (that's the one w/ the hang-gliding girl who rides giant pill-bugs, right?) let alone the music. will check out again
patlabor rings a bell - tank police? - but i've definitely never seen it, will check for it
also wondering what's the next place to go with geinoh - i know there's a ton of other stuff and i hear a lot of it is good, but don't know where to start

Symphonic Suite Akira is actually the middle album in a trilogy, and the other two, Ecophony Rinne and Ecophony Gaia, are worth hearing as well.

ecophony
excellent word
Is it just me or is this stuff feeling mad ‘relevant’ rn; was hearing some akira ost in iglooghost
Anyways... akira
― Vapor waif (uptown churl), Saturday, 8 September 2018 02:22 (seven years ago)
it is definitely relevant and intersects w the resurgence of interest in fourth world music
― the late great, Saturday, 8 September 2018 02:38 (seven years ago)
I've got ecophonies rinne & gaia, they are pretty good though they don't quite approach the bonkers melange of choirs, gamelan, and 80s synth rock of akira. definitely time i listened to all this again. Rassera, rassera, rasse rasse rassera, rassera, rassera, rasse rasse rassera, RASSERA, RASSERA, RASSE RASSE RASSERA.

ok i have seen the film like 8 million times so i was familiar w the cues but i totally underestimated ghost in the shell as an album-length listening experience
also it’s more removed from akira than i had realized ... much more minimal, more space, more patient development of themes
― the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 04:50 (seven years ago)
which is kind of counterintuitive because akira has 14 minute tracks
― the late great, Wednesday, 12 September 2018 04:51 (seven years ago)
Maybe it's because I've only seen ghost in the shell once, 20 odd years ago - haven't seen Akira in 20 years either but I remember it better - anyway some nice choral stuff on the GitS soundtrack but it doesn't have the peaks or wild inventiveness of Akira imo. Nor the troughs tbf, Akira is hard work in places, not least the Noh stuff which I find basically unlistenable.
