X-Press 2-Muzikizum-Good because it's big

What I mean is it's nice to see a bigroom sound on at least one album this year, cos I found alot of the mainstream dance albums, including the Chems one were a bit too subtle and not obvious enough for my thick skull which needs a massive hammer of blatant plodding beats to smash it into life.

Actually it's not plodding at all, it's brilliant. Muzikizum-Rushy, midset, deep but not boring type track, those squeaky noises in the background and the strings just make it. And it sets the whole train braking heavily in a station vibe for the rest of the album.

I Want You Back-Total pent up pressure cooker of a song, all that tight percussion and Dieter Meier's vocal is great, particularly cos he rolls his Rs and he sounds kind of insane with love. "my feelings forrrrrrrr you, they are, so true" etc. It's the ultimate pressurised house track this year, perhaps along with Sting Me Red. All about the rhythm.

Actually it's the start of Muzikizum that's the key, that massive spiralling wind type noise and then those giant razor sharp synth parts, I mean starting an album with a big fuck off club machine track, it works so well!

You all know my feelings on Lazy.

Smoke Machine, another massive massive track, I could play this album to anyone with any interest in dance music and they'd like it I reckon (except people here but you're different). I mean Smoke Machine is a totally hard intense house track, and everything about it is deathly serious and electronic, no sense of disco or soul about it whatsoever, and yet it's fucking tremendous fun.

Muzikizum is the best dance album this year, in a bad enough year for dance albums, but I mean can anyone really think FC Kahuna is better than this????? Is Medicine8 properly stomping and huge? Or is it another "great little album"?

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 November 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Medicine8 is STOMP STOMP KASTOMP STOMP STOMP STOMP BASH! pretty much from the word go. Probably more so than Muzikism.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 15 November 2002 12:47 (twenty-three years ago)

And definitely more so than FC Kahuna.

Is it? I would class Capital Rocka as a great track but not an especially big one. Same with the other two songs I've heard. (Waaaaaaay better than FC Kahuna though in my book)

i like 'Muzikizum' and 'Smoke Machine' but no more than 'Nothing Is Wrong' and 'Machine Says Yes' - i've got to download the rest of the X-Press II album, THEN actually listen to it properly...

has it been a bad year for dance albums? in what sense? quality? quantity? both?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'big' then. It's not especially deep or epic sounding or anything like that, but it is loud and banging and utterly untroubled by subtlety.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 15 November 2002 16:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I guess I do mean deep and epic, it's not really a criticism of the other things I suppose. I really didn't feel the FC Kahuna album. I'd say I'll love the Medicine8 one. I think it's been a bad year for dance albums yeah, I've enjoyed lots of mixes and loads of singles but there's no real outstanding album for me, nothing which can match Kittenz and Thee Glitz or even Discovery from last year.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 15 November 2002 16:46 (twenty-three years ago)

I can see what you mean - I can think of loads of electronic albums I've liked, but nothing I can hear really tearing up a dancefloor - they're mostly livingroom/headphones albums like the Timo Maas one.

Next year should be good though, if only because the Plump DJs and maybe even Stanton Warriors might finally get an album out.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 15 November 2002 16:58 (twenty-three years ago)

True, I think Jon Carter has an album due at some point next year, he's got this new track that uses the spoken word vocal from Vogue, sounded very good.

Smoke Machine is tremendously horrible, it sounds like a funk instrumental with bad beats, argh

I can think of loads of electronic albums I've liked, but nothing I can hear really tearing up a dancefloor

Come on, what about the Marco V and Cosmic Gate albums? Both are a bit repetitive, granted, but filled with full-on banging big room tunes all the same. Especially the Marco V one - it's got all the 12" hits: Savage, Recovered, Simulated, Godd, In Charge, Tolerance...

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 15 November 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Chupa, I think that's a fake version of Smoke Machine. I got it before.
