These late albums seem very much of a piece to me. Which one is the best?

YWID = Ten New Songs > Old Ideas > Popular Problems > Dear Heather (probably his weakest album overall)

ten new songs >>>>>>>>

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 13 September 2018 15:14 (seven years ago)

the flat sardonic chintziness of the future made way way deeper and more heartbreaking

glad there's a new thread for me to insist that Darkness is one of his deepest jams

Ten New Songs is such an amazing album.

I know it's not this poll, but I was listening to The Future, and after the introductory title track I started imagining Nick Cave's reaction upon hearing it for the first time.

Anyway, I like all his final stuff, but the title track of You Want It Darker is so cool.

Dear Heather is the only dud.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 September 2018 12:56 (seven years ago)

The one-two punch of In My Secret Life and A Thousand Kisses Deep at the start of Ten New Songs is so, so good.

Those two at least are on his two-cd hits collection, and it says a lot that they don't stand out as any less quality than what preceded them.

I kinda like the YWID remix that popped up on streaming services earlier this year. I could go for more attempts to do things like that with his late material.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Thursday, 27 September 2018 13:21 (seven years ago)

we should poll ten new songs to see the incredible margin by which In My Secret Life will win

niels, Thursday, 27 September 2018 13:33 (seven years ago)

i’d vote for “alexandra leaving”!

princess of hell (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 September 2018 13:36 (seven years ago)

"A Thousand Kisses Deep" used so expertly in The Good Thief.

The Silky Veils of Alfred (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 September 2018 13:39 (seven years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

Interesting result, I thought Ten New Songs would walk this. I must confess I haven't listened much to You Want It Darker since release day so I guess I need to revisit it.

also, props to Simon H for more or less predicting the outcome correctly
