Staring at the Sea (I think the cassette was called Standing on a Beach / Staring at the Sea but then they switched it for the CD version for some reason). Or Join the Dots if you give a damn about any post 1986 B sides - I guess the 1986-1989 ones are good but the rest is dreck for me.

Staring at the Sea (I think the cassette was called Standing on a Beach / Staring at the Sea but then they switched it for the CD version for some reason)
The compilation was called Standing On A Beach on LP and Standing on a Beach - The Singles (And Unavailable B-Sides) on cassette, but Staring At The Sea on VHS for obvious reasons. The VHS had new clips made for four non-singles, and the CD included those tracks, so was titled after the video. Then CDs took over the industry and the title stopped making sense forever.

Pretty sure the b-sides were only on the cassette (side 2)

I heart Ross's selections. I'm almost certainly repeating the other threads but Pet Shop Boys' (both of them), Galaxie 500's Uncollected, The Wedding Present's Tommy and Pulp's Second Class also come speedily to mind. Though not all are purely B-sides.

Cabaret Voltaire's The Living Legends is definitely tainted by A-sides but it roolz, so...

Prince disc 3 of The Hits obvTonics and Twisted Chasers - GBV458489 B-Sides - The FallIf Robyn Hitchcock did a b sides comp for the A&M years it’d go straight to the top of the heap. Similarly, if you lump all the bonus tracks from his Rhino reissues into one playlist you have the best RH album.

Neither Lullabies to Violaine or Oscillons from the Anti-Sun are B-side comps. They're EP comps, and both bands saved them of their best stuff for EPs, so.

Does Elvis Costello Taking Liberties count? I know it’s where I first heard the mother of all B sides, Big Tears.
― kornrulez6969, Thursday, 20 September 2018 12:29 (six years ago)
why use this thread though? there is a thread with the exact title
― niels, Thursday, 20 September 2018 12:35 (six years ago)
first time I heard that one I figured it had to be a cover, no way would he leave such a great song off the record

Pixies Complete 'B' Sides is the one I listen to the most.

Big Tears...no way would he leave such a great song off the record
Yes yes yes! Inexplicable. We discussed this in detail a few years back in the Elvis Costello poll where it finished in the top 20. It's my favorite song of his.

XTC's Rage and Bone Buffet has a number of those. It's a bit uneven as a compilation but it has at least 5 or 6 "how the hell did they leave THAT one off?" moments

'The Big Hand'? 'Scared as You'? 'This Twilight Garden'?
"Dreck"?

"Harold and Joe" (1990) is sometimes my favorite Cure song.
― eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Thursday, 20 September 2018 20:07 (six years ago)
oh - I have to give it to Harold and Joe. But yeah Austin I'm sorry to disappoint but those songs don't do much for me. I hate Wish though, probably in a minority there.

probably in a minority there.
Enh, maybe. I mean, there's like a semi-decent chance of that.

Wish is probably the Cure album I listen to most. All the b-sides from that era are pretty fantastic in my book.
Besides Join the Dots, my other favorite b-side comp is Sci-Fi Lullabies.

Recently re-purchased the Jesus & Mary Chain's Barbed Wire Kisses, which is as good as any of their albums and frequently better.

Mansun always had insanely good b-sides. There is a disc full of them within the Kleptomania set (of which the first disc contained recordings for their fourth album, the third disc various outtakes and rarities), that CD is quite excellent although some of the best were still left out (esp. The Holy Blood And The Holy Grail & No One Knows Us). I can imagine that it is possible to compile Mansun B-sides into their best album.
