btw in case you were ever wondering wtf Bonham was actually doing on Achilles, this is a pretty much perfect drum cover with foot view -- I always had a hard time making out what the kick part was because of that chukka bass sound

Kick drum has a little immigrant song flair to it

There was a recentish LZ thread where people (incl. myself?) dissected some youtube drummers' playalongs of some of Bonzo's more uh... athletic/difficult? performances... but that is currently beyond my ILX search ability.

I forgot Achilles -- sub in place of Levee for me.

WmC, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 03:41 (seven years ago)

Sort of surprised more people don’t pick In My Time of Dying. Other than that and Achilles there were easily 10 tracks I could have picked.

the zep drum sound is so spectacular that it's kinda hard for me to figure out if what i like about a recording's drum part is bonham's playing or the thunderous kick or the crack of the snare, etc.. when the levee breaks is example 1A.

Get “Trampled Underfoot” out of my list because I forgot “Hurdy Gurdy Man”! What a great drum sound, and was that not his first-ever recording? He had his own amazing style down from the very beginning.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 26 September 2018 09:22 (seven years ago)

John Paul Jones - who arranged Hurdy Gurdy Man - says it's Clem Cattini on drums, not Bonham (and it's not Page on guitar either).

AFAIK, the only pre-Zep music featuring Page, Bonham, Jones and Plant is the alb they recorded w/ P J Proby:

No doubt that the sound is a big part of it, but his playing is also a big part of the sound. Find the isolated fool in the rain part and listen to how he varies the sound of the kick drum with his attack.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 26 September 2018 11:26 (seven years ago)

Dave Pegg's story in "Trampled Underfoot" of how Bonham finally made it to a Hawaii gig after "carousing" with Pegg is one of the top Bonzo moments for me.

xp totally agreed

No doubt that the sound is a big part of it, but his playing is also a big part of the sound.

Dave Mattacks:

“I was over at Bonham’s house in the early days. There was a jukebox in one corner and a little Ludwig kit with an 18″ bass drum. I asked him a question about some riff or other. I understood what he was saying when he explained the riff, but that wasn’t what caught my attention. Understanding the riff became totally irrelevant. I was sitting and listening to this guy play an 18″ bass drum, and it was exactly the same sound as on a Led Zeppelin record! It was, like, a 4x 14 snare drum, an 18” bass drum, an 8x 12 and 14x 14, and he said, ‘Oh, you mean the thing on blah, blah,’ and that sound came out. I just couldn’t believe it; it was that drum sound from this toy drumset! The bass drum had the front head on, and the playing head and the other head up tight. I know if I tried playing a drum like that it would just go ‘bing,’ but when he played it, it was his sound, which proves the theory that most good musicians carry their sound with them. Whatever you sit down and play becomes your instrument.”
