Kind of an obvious target to tackle... I was struck by how amazing it is that Pearl Jam actually was so succesful. Just seems like their self-destruction was beating the public to the punch, perfect timing being the biggest thing going for them. Funny how things work out in the music biz, eh?

"The record label had a better idea when it disabled every button on the Discman but PLAY: even if critics hated “Riot Act,” there was no way to make it stop."

not actually true.

Do music critics know about No Code and Yield? Those are (IMHO) by far Pearl Jam's best discs, and to most people it's like they don't even exist.

I'll get Riot Act and probably love it...of course, I've got priorities (first Phrenology, then Steal this Album, and THEN Riot Act)...

Bit of a yawner all around (both the article and the album).

Note to Newsweek: Rock does not need to be saved, so kindly shut up.

David Allen, Friday, 15 November 2002 18:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddie Vedder's on the next Cat Power disc. I'm dying laughing/screaming in terror.

Eddie reminds me of Rowsdower from the Final Sacrifice.

Nicole (Nicole), Saturday, 16 November 2002 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I wanna throw stuff whenever I hear some pompous star saying they're "gonna take rock back." From who? Self-glorifying messianic assholes.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 16 November 2002 18:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Eddie reminds me of Rowsdower from the Final Sacrifice.

ARGH.

Who does that make the wisp-ass kid and the grizzled miner guy? And dare I ask, who is the dark enemy aka Canadian villian Garth Vader?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 16 November 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

"...Eddie Vedder's on the next Cat Power disc...."

They deserve each other. She has critically collapsed.

dsico (dsico), Sunday, 17 November 2002 00:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Does anyone know the name of the song they did last night on Letterman (Friday night)? It was totally amazing.

Kris (aqueduct), Sunday, 17 November 2002 00:51 (twenty-three years ago)

I figured it out, it's called "Save You"; it sounds like the Hellacopters doing a Roxy Music song. Is this what they sound like now?

Kris (aqueduct), Sunday, 17 November 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Pearl Jam > Cat Power, of course.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Sunday, 17 November 2002 01:24 (twenty-three years ago)

He just seeing if I was banned ;).

"gonna take rock back." Tony you would do well to take a deep breath and get some O2... I doubt the quote was meant in that context.

My oh my what a tosser this newseek dude is, stuck in 1992 wishing for another Vs. Who would have believed he could get away with writing such tripe. Conveniently missing three great albulms since 1995, this guy hankers for the angst and emotion of early Pearl Jam records forgetting the world and the band has moved on. I was half waiting for him to say "Vedder loses control..Pearl Jam loses the ache". He further confirms his status as a grade A gimp by bemoaning the declining record sales figures as some sort of measure of worthiness..while *revealing* their sellout motives. Ha good for a laugh I suppose.

See Paul Cox for his thoughts on the albulm on another thread as he is OTM though Id say 1/2 the albulm is keepers(esp the Vedder based tunes Save you, Love Boat Captain,I am mine, and even the split enzy Green Disease). Could have been a really realy great albulm you can just see its all there but the production is just too lifeless and dull. The weariness factor on the slower tunes may be a bit of a grower though.

mark s (mark s), Sunday, 17 November 2002 12:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, methinks "Riot Act" is a great album. It would have benefitted from down-and-dirty "Binaural"-style production, but the songs are there. And out of the 15 tracks, there's only one ("1/2 Full") that I'd skip over - not too shabby. Some of them are actually even poignant - "Love Boat Captain" and the trippy "Help, Help" in particular.
