is there a microgenre name for this? Fretless bass, pianos and synthesizers, gated drums, splashes of "world music", bizarre lyrics of alternately literary, theatrical, paranoid or pastoral bent. Kate Bush, solo Peter Gabriel, the Alan Parsons Project, bits of XTC, late period Roxy/solo Bryan Ferry, that kind of thing. No Americans.

I mean Kate Bush can be bombastic too in places but generally I'm thinking of a vibe that is more restrained and cerebral, often melancholy
