Tentatively accepting the baton from C. Grisso/McCain, here is Volume #24. I've only knowingly heard two of these. Apologies in advance for any poll/formatting mistakes. Links to the polls for all previous Volumes can be found here.

(no Paul Nicholas, David Naughton or Ronnie McDowell, and Brotherhood of Man looks iffy)

Easy Andrew Gold

Running out of steam a bit.

Samantha Sang, no contest.

I heard "Feels So Good" enough times in 1978-1980 to last me for about 3,000 years.

Josefa, Thursday, 8 November 2018 23:09 (seven years ago)

Yeah, got to be “Emotion”.

breastcrawl, Thursday, 8 November 2018 23:11 (seven years ago)

Solid Gold.

Had no idea that Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids had a hit five years after American Graffiti (where they're pretty great).

"Emotion"'s not bad, although I just jogged my memory on YouTube and I'm not convinced it's not just a Bee Gees record and Samantha Sang never really existed.

This is a good bit about "Emotion" from Wikipedia:

It was originally intended for use in the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever,[citation needed] but ended up being featured in the film The Stud (1978) starring Joan Collins.

Also interesting that it appeared on the Private Stock label in 1977, as did Starbuck's "Everybody Be Dancing,'" as did Blondie's debut album.

I spent a few minutes trying to place where I knew "Makin' It" from before I remembered:

yeah i literally know nothing on this mix. it's very strange because the '70s are my decade in terms of the music i like most, but i'm totally ignorant of the pop hits of the day - as far as i know the osmonds are "that band that did 'crazy horses'". i watched the film promo for "emotion". it's very weird to watch, especially when the bee gees actually take over on vocals, and extremely '70s-grody - i find disco-era visual aesthetics pretty universally repulsive. it's an ok ballad, but not a patch on "how deep is your love".

i also gave the starbuck a listen, mostly because i've only heard two of their songs and i wanted to roll the dice to test my belief that starbuck have a vibes or marimba solo in every song (they do). the synth reminds me of something much better, but i can't remember what. possibly the laziest use of vocoder i've ever heard. i have a strong sentimental fondness for starbuck, but this song is just not up to their standards and gives a definite impression of starbuck-by-numbers.

i also listened to a minute of wet willie, which reminded me of a less good version of "ready 'n' steady" by d.a.

I’m a bit surprised that people seem unfamiliar with “Emotion”, given that Destiny’s Child covered it on their Survivor album. It was a top 10 hit for them in 2001 as the follow-up single to “Bootylicious”.

(I much prefer SS+BG’s version though)

i'm really bad with chart pop! (i think i like Destiny's Child's version better!)

WOW these songs are terrible. No wonder Disco Demolition Night was such a success.

Last chance to save the Brotherhood of Man from null points from the ILX jury.

This is the first Super Hits poll I haven't voted in--it's just the worst volume of the series.

Probably would have voted for "Emotion," so it wouldn't have changed the results.

Hideous Lump, Thursday, 15 November 2018 06:04 (seven years ago)

Has "Feels So Good" had no afterlife whatsoever? That seems odd, since it was just as ubiquitous as "Stayin' Alive" at that time and it even sounds like something millennials would have rediscovered the way they've done with Toto's "Africa" etc

Josefa, Thursday, 15 November 2018 14:46 (seven years ago)

Obviously you've never seen Mike Judge's King of The Hill.

I didn't vote in this one either, there isn't a single song that evokes a positive memory for me. If pressed, maybe "Heaven on the 7th Floor," a harmless piece of fluffy junk.
