Say there's a limit there, we can't POLL past that - The Byrds, Younger Than Yesterday

OK, next one. Crosby with two this time and Chris Hillman really steps it up with three great songs. Wonder how many votes Hillman's songs will get. This is my favorite version of "Why" and I'm probably voting for that. Seems to have been recorded fairly quickly toward the end of the year and released in February of '67.

always loved "have you seen her face"

twin sinema (voodoo chili), Thursday, 15 November 2018 01:56 (six years ago)

The 5D poll had maybe 3 options I'd consider, this has at least 6. Amazing album.

JoeStork, Thursday, 15 November 2018 02:32 (six years ago)

Way fewer clunkers than 5D so I think I'll re-listen to clarify things. But "Why" finally ended up on an album here--I suspect I too will find it hard to resist.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:09 (six years ago)

Fewer outstanding songs than 5D but I'm listening again now and it is a lovely thing isn't it

imago, Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:28 (six years ago)

yes probably "Why" will win but it's not my favorite version so I chose "Time Between" over "Everybody's Been Burned" (McGuinn is not my favorite Byrd as I gather is clear)

L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:31 (six years ago)

This is tough

Buckaroo Can't Fail (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:35 (six years ago)

"Why" seems like last year's song on this album, so I don't why people are so sure it'll win. Between "Rock and Roll Star" and "Everybody's Been Burned" for me, Hillman's bass playing on the former more than compensating for Crosby's colossal self-regard.

ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:38 (six years ago)

... sorry, bass playing on the latter, his bass playing on the former is awesome too though.

ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:38 (six years ago)

I was thinking "Why" would win because it's great

I have a colossal regard for Crosby as well so Crosby otm

L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:51 (six years ago)

I like him to but he is an ass. I also like "Why"!

ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 November 2018 13:52 (six years ago)

Glad to see the love for this version of 'Why', I got the impression it was regarded as inferior to the b-side recording but I've always preferred it. It's between that and 'Have You Seen Her Face?', the "Run by, don't turn back..." section kills me.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 15 November 2018 14:01 (six years ago)

it is inferior to the b-side version imo but still it's "Why"

I love Crosby but wow is "Mind Gardens" a stinker

L'assie (Euler), Thursday, 15 November 2018 14:08 (six years ago)

well, I'm going to throw my vote to CTA 102. it makes me extremely delighted. my back pages probably the best composition here but as it isn't an original i'll do the right thing and give it to the cute aliens

imago, Thursday, 15 November 2018 14:47 (six years ago)

“Why” is one counterculture-era lyric that I think has a lot of general relevance. I would probably vote for “Renaissance Fair” if it wasn’t on the album.

timellison, Thursday, 15 November 2018 16:08 (six years ago)

You know, “Lady Friend,” for me, is really the best Crosby song.

timellison, Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:38 (six years ago)

It's pretty fuckin' ace, that's for sure!

ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 November 2018 18:58 (six years ago)

I would vote for lady friend above any of these but going with have you seen her face

iatee, Thursday, 15 November 2018 19:19 (six years ago)

Lady Friend/Old John Robertson has to be one of the all-time great A-side & B-side singles. Such beautiful singing on Lady Friend, great horn parts too (in general, Byrds/Cros were writing really well for brass in this period).

Voted Why, even though I prefer the earlier version.

Ward Fowler, Thursday, 15 November 2018 19:33 (six years ago)

“Lady Friend” is rad in the way that it sounds like the Byrds! Like the Clark and McGuinn Byrds.

timellison, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:03 (six years ago)

Yeah 'Lady Friend' is possibly my all-time favourite Byrds song.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 15 November 2018 21:18 (six years ago)

"Lady Friend" in place of "Mind Gardens" would make this unambiguously their best album for me. Maybe it is anyway.

"Thoughts and Words" deserves some love somewhere here too. But having listened to everything again I'm afraid it's still "Why" getting my vote.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Thursday, 15 November 2018 23:33 (six years ago)

Love "So You Want to Be a Rock 'n Roll Star," even though it's as whiny and as condescending as "I Dig Rock and Roll Music." Which I also love. Which I guess means I love it when folkies and hippies get all holier-than-thou.

clemenza, Thursday, 15 November 2018 23:38 (six years ago)

(If I'm not mistaken, they were really agitated by the imminent threat presented by the Monkees.)

clemenza, Thursday, 15 November 2018 23:43 (six years ago)

well, I'm going to throw my vote to CTA 102. it makes me extremely delighted. my back pages probably the best composition here but as it isn't an original i'll do the right thing and give it to the cute aliens

i'm glad somebody's going to vote for this one, i love it but it's obviously slight so i couldn't justify voting for it

except for "mind gardens" i love all these songs, my favorite byrds record even if the dylan cover isn't their best and the version of "why" isn't my preferred version

dub pilates (rushomancy), Thursday, 15 November 2018 23:47 (six years ago)

Euler (Euler) wrote this on thread My vote for the worst song ever recorded on board I Love Music on Jan 16, 2006

I'll second "Mind Gardens" by the Byrds. Crosby's songs are usually terrific but this one is a disaster; and to boot, they put an "alternate version" on the Younger Than Yesterday reissue, which really must have been a funny prank for someone...

visiting, Thursday, 15 November 2018 23:52 (six years ago)

Maybe I haven't listened to "mind gardens" too closely... but I recall it just being an awesome tuneless haze of backwards guitars

brimstead, Friday, 16 November 2018 01:42 (six years ago)

You see, it's about minds...in gardens, get it?

Buckaroo Can't Fail (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 November 2018 01:49 (six years ago)

wow I am consistent!

L'assie (Euler), Friday, 16 November 2018 01:55 (six years ago)

Euler’s constant

Buckaroo Can't Fail (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 16 November 2018 02:22 (six years ago)

I love Mind Gardens! Don't really get the hate. Okay, maybe I do, it's probably the best example of Crosby's all-figured-out hippy soul poetry pretentiousness. But it still sounds great to me.

I'm not voting for it though. Having a hard time deciding which one to go for. I often think of 5D as their best, but this one probably is (and the next one's great as well) - and I'm saying that while I'm a massive Gene Clark fan.

Contenders: All four Hillman's songs (why did the OP only say "three great songs"?); CTA (McGuinn is my second fave Byrd after Clark after all); Everybody's Been Burned. Every song I didn't mention is great too!

Valentijn, Friday, 16 November 2018 07:41 (six years ago)

The bonus tracks on this album are amazing: It Happens Each Day; Don't Make Waves; Lady Friend and Old John Robertson are all fantastic. The two alternate versions of album tracks are also really good - provided you actually like Mind Gardens.

I went with Time Between.

Valentijn, Friday, 16 November 2018 07:59 (six years ago)

the best Byrds album. the best! has the same quicksilver amphetamine sound of blonde on blonde. I don't even mind the alien bit anymore, CTA is a great song.

Time Between. Heaven in just under 2 minutes.

'Thoughts and Words', because I love its melody and descending chord progression and also backwards 12 string ftw.

I think that maybe I'm dreaming becuz I'm having a hard time accepting that Renaissance Fair only got one stinkin' vote. It's the greatest song ever about Renassance Fairs.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 22 November 2018 00:46 (six years ago)

tbf

the Renaissance song 'Trip To The Fair' is one of the best songs ever

but yeah point taken

unfair but at least it got something, "the girl with no name" wound up behind the challops vote :(

dub pilates (rushomancy), Thursday, 22 November 2018 03:52 (six years ago)

I feel sad for the girl with no name, also being the girl with no vote. It's a lovely song.
I like that someone voted for Mind Gardens.

Valentijn, Thursday, 22 November 2018 07:37 (six years ago)

The bonus tracks on this album are amazing: It Happens Each Day; Don't Make Waves; Lady Friend and Old John Robertson are all fantastic.

"Lady Friend" (terrible title) is one of their greatest, I think.

clemenza, Thursday, 22 November 2018 12:54 (six years ago)

"Don't Make Waves" is not as bad as Crosby said it was but neither is it a classic.

Monica Kindle (Tom D.), Thursday, 22 November 2018 13:09 (six years ago)

agree, it's not awful but it is completely disposable

dub pilates (rushomancy), Thursday, 22 November 2018 16:29 (six years ago)

I was the ren faire voter
