And now, the end is near…

The final 12-song set in the HAND series covers tunes from the last two years of the 70s. I had been hoping the very last song would be "Music" by John Miles, but that only made #88 in the Hot 100, so you get Rockets covering F Mac instead. We end not with a bang therefore but a resigned shrug.

I thought the US and UK charts resembled each other more as the decade wore on, but obviously not! Not only did most of these acts not get anywhere near the UK charts, most of them were/are complete unknowns in the UK (the three British acts obv. were known).

ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Thursday, 15 November 2018 22:33 (six years ago)

UK acts were Sweet and ?? Just wondering.

VyrnaKnowlIsAHeadbanger, Thursday, 15 November 2018 22:37 (six years ago)

Sweet followed by Ambrosia followed by Ace.

Thank god they didn't put "You Light Up My Life" on any of these.

Wish I could find the Eugene Levy SCTV parody of Gino Vannelli in which Eugene-o's chest hair keeps growing more abundant as the song progresses.

I'll take Sweet here - the first I ever heard by them, so was surprised to hear the earlier glam stuff much later. Enjoy the Ace Frehley also, though that was an actual UK glam record before he did it.

re the US/UK charts I suspect the two were never so divergent as in the roughly 1978-1982 period when the New Wave was all over the UK charts but US radio was too restrictive to let any of it in aside from an occasional one-off ("Whip It" by Devo, "Rock Lobster" and that ilk).

Gino's like our national Rick Astley...I know I should know the Sweet and Ace Frehley songs, but "I Just Wanna Stop" is literally the only thing I'm familiar with here.

clemenza, Friday, 16 November 2018 13:11 (six years ago)

Re the Ace Frehley track, the original is a classic, never heard his version.

ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Friday, 16 November 2018 13:11 (six years ago)

... OK it's almost exactly the same but 3 years too late.

ROCK MUSIC (Tom D.), Friday, 16 November 2018 13:15 (six years ago)

The song was written by Russ Ballard but I'm assuming after having listened closely to Bohannon's "Insides Out" album.

Listening to Ambrosia’s “How Much I Feel” (I remember the title from Casey Kasem’s US Top 40 rundown on AFN Germany that I used to listen to as a teen, but I’d forgotten how the song actually went) and it’s giving me that innocent look, but I can see “It’s Too Late”’s tail still twitching in its mouth.

I quite like it, but not enough to vote for it.

That plot twist thing at the end of the song was a real 70s phenomenon, wasn’t it?
