I discovered this through the Rough Trade list taht was linked to from the list here. I thought it was quite good when I listened to it on spotify. Think I might need a physical copy.

Lump, really going for that "we put out one CD on DCG in 98 that went right to the cutout bin" band name

Song is good! Just get so aggravated even bands do that, they won't ever be that successful because of that stupid name

they had to name themselves after their second-favourite presidents of the united states of america song cuz 'peaches' was already taken

it is very good, but the name admittedly does it zero favors. (plus it probably gets lost since it's not really like the boygenius category of folk that gets most of the allotted folk coverage these days)

marling seems to be one of those artists that is *close* to fitting in but gets stuck between two worlds, like she was adjacent the volkswagon commercial folk revival, mumford etc, but was way too good to fit in with that but somehow is perceived as too square for the boygenius/big thief zone as you said

and she's not hippie/druggy enough to fit into the whole aquarium drunkard/post fahey zone

from what I gather of people who really like julien baker, lucy dacus, etc. it's about the lyrics being intimate, whereas a lot of laura marling's songs actively antagonize and/or push away the listener. they're spikier in concept, if not necessarily in sound

yeah i guess traditionalist is a better way of saying it

yeah to me her music feels closer to Nick Cave than to boygenius

I said this on another thread, but this is her stab at a Hannah Peel vibe (and in fact features Peel on Trombone). It's a bit low key, but I really like that she keeps testing out new directions.

I'm glad ILM is starting to check this out, it felt very overlooked for a while.

I think when your last album was entitled 'Semper Femina' and full of allusions to 19th century painting and poetry then calling your next project 'LUMP' is a statement of sorts.

There was already a Minutemen-inspired New Orleans band called Lump back in the 90s.

this makes me way more interested in her music than hearing that someone's lyrics or songs are very intimate. i don't think women are generally rewarded in making music unless they offer up their most personal feelings on a song platter, and the idea that she is holding back -- witholding, even -- makes me way more interested in what she has to say.

i like the stupid band name too. it's confounding and defies expectations. maybe that winds up being infuriating for some people but not for me :)

It just bums me out because it's sort of barrier to it doing as well as it could, it really sucks when you're saddled with a bad name

maybe the barrier is intentional! didn't get in the way of bill orcutt's musical trajectory as far as i can tell.

this record is so well recorded, just sounds great, nice space, such clarity in the mix

Every time I try to listen to this the first line "If you keep rolling the dices" makes me forcibly eject the CD and hurl it across the room. And I don't even own a CD player any more.

New album. The singles are the best songs from it imo. The rest is quite good too

a few friends forced me to overcome my lack of interest in her work and the terrible name, and i do have to say this is far better than anything else i've heard her be involved in. that name though.

I need to make some time to check out this new one
