a thread to discuss this band and things related to this band

three things of interest just from 2018:

1. somebody released a cd of solo work by toshiharu ōsato, some of it recorded in 2008, a year before his death. i'm almost certain this material hasn't been released before. in any event, i'd love to hear it! has anybody heard it? what does it sound like? the cd looks like this:

2. a vinyl-only release out of finland that the label describes as a sort of "best-of" from the 10xcd box set plus an exclusive bonus track. they sure are milking the analogue / vinyl angle:

So what’s a young analog enthusiast to do? To solve this dilemma, Ektro’s Full Contact imprint has distilled the strongest selections from the Gaseneta box into a tidy self-titled LP. The group’s signature tunes show up in three versions each, among them a previously undiscovered, nine-minute rampage through “Tōchan no Pō ga Kikoeru” that’s exclusive to this record.

if anybody can be troubled to track this down and listen to the bonus track, please post here with your findings! (or put it on youtube)

3. a live (reunion?) record from april '18. i can't really find any information about this cd or this show except the info on the back of the cd. it was released by something called the loft project, who for some reason don't have any information about the record on their website:

the back of the cd shows the line-up:

i only really know "sooner or later". there's a "greatest hits" from 2011, i now see - i might need to check that out, the box is too much...

"sooner or later" is fantastic and was my introduction to the band. i think probably some day i'll reach for the box, but for now i'm content.

drunk-ordered the osato cd last night, i'll report here when i get the chance to hear it.

earlier this year i read a book by osato, a memoir of sorts, about his time in the band and going to university. i could not recommend it more highly -- it's just really well written and would most likely interest people who have never heard (or heard of) gaseneta. i think maybe ultimately the people he was interacting with were so utterly bizarre and interesting that the book is just necessarily compelling. real freaks like

Osato Toshiharu's memoir/novel of the origins of Tokyo's most uncompromising punk band, Gaseneta. It certainly sets a record for literary references in a book about artcore music! Funny, thoughtful, and ultimately moving account. Awarded Best Book of the Year for 2017 by terminal-boredom.com!
