this still feels so recent to me even though it was a decade ago!! whats going on!! am i insane??
what was your top ten of 2009 then? What would be your top ten (or 50 or 53 or 100) of 2009 now?
what stuff aged well ? what aged like triddash? I'm sure most ppl will still defend their top tens or whatever then but im sure theres been stuff you discovered in the interim you prefer
or make this convo more freeform idk ...
i feel like the thing about 2009 ilx is most of the regulars of the golden era (lol) hadn't left yet, but a kind of 'final form' codified version of ilx aesthetic was pretty established, a more refined version of its older days...+ this was the year before ILX got all WUT WUT WUT WUT~~~ 'd out confusing americans and really balkanizing for good

As I've said, I want to poll 2000-09 later this year, but 2009 is an interesting case in isolation as I can't remember it being a very good year at all

Can we just delete your final paragraph, which doesn't really stand up at all and will derail the whole thread, and focus on the rest of it? (xpost)

it starts 'i feel' as its a pov from a subjective & personal vantage pt
I found my top ten from ten years ago:
1) Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca2) Worriedaboutsatan - Arrivals3) Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions4) Land of Kush - Against the Day5) Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix6) Animal Collective - Fall Be Kind ep7) Yonlu - A Society In Which No Tear Is Shed is Inconceivably Mediocre8) The XX - XX9) Delorean - Ayrton Senna Ep10) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz
It's kinda fun looking back on. A year later I discovered a record from 2009 that changed my life: The-Dream - Love vs Money. It was the year of GADBY, which today, along with records like Monoliths & Dimensions, look more like - great - last gasps of the 00s. But a lot of the sound of the 10s was being thought up on the sidelines.

― imago, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 10:16 (five years ago) link
there you have it, ILX: it was a year of trendy indie bollocks, breathlessly overhyped r&b, and far-right ukrainian metal. amongst all this, fever ray won the albums poll, having had the good grace to not turn awful just yet
― imago, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 10:22 (five years ago) link
I feel like you're massively overstating the significance of the Wut thread, yeah it topped its year poll but its not like it, or that sort of music, dominated the intervening eight years or whatever. What 2009 does bring to mind is:
- Guetta-house and fake Guetta-house fucking everywhere. This took years to work its way out of the system. - Absolute peak UK funky, genuinely a golden era - Terius Nash right at the centre of ILM discourse, not just Love vs Money but the Electrik Red and Mariah albums as well. (In terms of pop discourse eras, Terius really DOES feel like another world right now) - Dubstep becoming a legtimate pop thing (Skream/La Roux remix in particular) and various post-dubstep things bubbling through - Also watery electropop, largely terrible pop-grime etc - Real purple patch for Balearic, disco etc, the Juan McLean etc - General sense the whole late 00s minimal boom had finally run out of steam - GAPDY yawn

Going by RYM's list as a partial refresher, The xx, Grizzly Bear, Tomasz Stanko, Tim Hecker, Bat for Lashes, Anouar Brahem, Celer, The Necks, Ambrose Field, David Sylvian, Ballaké Sissiko & Vincent Segal, Shackleton, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Monolake all resonated with me at the time.

A weak year for rap albums but a very strong one for mixtapes. I'm guessing Huntsville International was my most played tape/album that year but there were a lot of great mixtapes that year, from Gucci to Wayne and Drake. Hell, I even liked J Cole back then, lol.

Gonna scroll through my 2009 albums in iTunes and write whatever comes to my head
- This was the last year that "indie music" was exciting to me, i.e. I listened to pretty much anything that could be described as 'indie' / 'indie rock'- Remember Casiotone for the Painfully Alone? I loved that shit in 2009- Dreams-Come-True-Girl by Cass McCombs is still that tune- Til the Casket Drops was disappointing - I liked that Clues album from the other guy in The Unicorns- Did anyone bet on the dork who said "MY SHIRT AINT GOT NO STRIPES BUT I CAN MAKE THAT PUSSY WHISTLE....LIKE THE ANDY GRIFFITH THEME SONG" would easily be the biggest rapper in the world in 10 years?- I really didn't like that Girls album that everyone pretended to like and has subsequently completely forgotten about- Veckatimest seemed like it could've been a classic at the time but I haven't felt like listening to it in like 8 years- I really liked the Handsome Furs record with all the Russian imagery and the New Order rip off- Remember HERE WE GO MAGIC? I suspect that Fangela still a pretty good song but may be embarrassing to listen to now- Blueprint 3 had some good tracks imo, and is a decent late career victory lap. I still occasionally think about some of the forgotten tracks like I'M SO AMBITIOUS...I MIGHT HIT TWO SISTERS- We all loved jj for a minute there- Freak Train by Kurt Vile still his best damn song- Remember Le Loup?- I'm God still the best Lil B song- I still ride for the Lonely Island album- I really liked the Lovely Feathers for a couple of years based on their first album (lol) but was disappointed by their 2009 album- Major Lazer album is still the best thing they did- Love the Ecastatic my Mos Def. Auditorium still one of my favourite tracks ever.- I forgot about that Mountain Goats bible album- DEADBEAT SUMMER- Pains of Being Pure at Heart unfairly shunned cos of their shit name imo. That debut record holds up.- Felt like Phoenix were everywhere. I guess Lisztomania will be the tune everyone remembers from that one now, but at the time it was ALL ABOUT 1901- I really liked R. Kelly in 2009 and thought Echo was hilarious. Bad opinion in retrospect.- OB4CL2...still a classic. New Wu is one I revisit a lot- I liked the record by the guy from Menonema...Ramona Falls. Haven't listened to it in 10 years.- BUDWEISER SPRITE DO YOU FEEL ALRIGHT- Deeper Than Rap showed that Rick Ross had promise despite largely being seen as a joke. RICH OFF COCAINE + LAY BACK great songs.- Royksopp album was cute- I don't think I ever liked Shabazz Palaces as much as gorilla vs bear wanted me to- This was maybe the first year Spencer Krug disappointed me after being a huge fanboy of his, didn't really dig Dragonslayer despite really trying to- Same with the Swan Lake record- 2 great Thee Oh Sees records, liked Help! the most- Love vs. Money still rules- Listened to The Thermals a lot, their album from this year reminds me of recovering from getting my molars pulled out- Timbaland went into full Euro-pop mode and kinda shit the bed imo- I liked that Wilco and Feist duet- xx record holds up, veritable classic imo

I only got into metal a couple of years ago but I would still religiously pick up Mastodon's latest albums throughout the 00s. And Isis's and Sunn O)))'s, of course. I need to give those the spin of hindsight sometime soon.

2009 in my mind was peak twig-indie and watery post-dubstep. So many paper-thin beats, indistinct vocals, layers of digital reverb. I dunno... It was also the year I think I started writing about music properly and receiving tons of promo CDs in the post, many of which were crap.
I wish I could find my top ten list from that time.

Back then I was in my early 20s and still firmly entrenched in the feeling that everything having to be a bit prog (even moreso than now) but a lot of my faves of the time were either noticeably on the wane (The Mars Volta, Opeth) or had just one more classic in them (Isis, Mastodon). There's probably a lot of stuff I loved at the time but got rid of and subsequently forgotten.
Had a quick look now and my music from that year is still embarrassingly rock/metal based almost exclusively, but I might make a list of the best stuff though idgaf about ranked lists, track lists or if music stands the test of time if I still like it.

i feel like in 2009 i was mostly listening to old music - i was working for the first time in a long time and had just gotten my first ipod. the new stuff i was listening to was mostly prog (some of which might even be up imago's alley - the cheer-accident is pretty much my absolute fave of theirs as well). here's a partial list of 2009 releases i feel like i was listening to in or around 2009:
tortoise, rubik, plush, mission of burma, miriodor, magma, litmus, knifeworld, joker's daughter, hypnotic brass ensemble, him, fucked up, curse ov dialect, circulatory system, cheer-accident, charlotte gainsbourg, cave, broadway project, bibio, andromeda mega express orchestra, anamanaguchi, alamaailman vasarat, "kind of bloop"
i don't think i even heard any of the gapdy records until at least 2011, although i might have heard "merriwether post pavilion" at the time and dismissed it. then again i might have dismissed it without hearing it. i can't remember. most of my music listening back then was on rym, where i was still regularly writing bad reviews.

this was the last year before hip-hop started getting Alex Da Kid'd out. there seemed to be a genuine dearth of new rappers and most of the best hip-hop seemed to be made by oldheads. DJ Quik, obviously, Raekwon, Cam'ron dropped a pretty good album that year, so did Camp Lo, Diamond District, DOOm, Mos Def. Gucci and Freddie were the main exceptions, younger dudes who doing their thing and doing it well. It was the year before Wiz/Cudi/Drake really made their mark on the mainstream.
Anyway, some more music I liked a lot at the time that I still like: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix, Wild Beasts, AnCo, Neko Case, Bat For Lashes, No Ceilings, Isis, The State vs. Radric Davis, Dinosaur Jr., Camera Obscura, Black Milk, Bill Callahan
I'm sure there are more

turn of the decade eras feel consistently strange to me. like the two before it, 2009-2011 feels in and of itself, transitional, and not especially reflective of "the '00s" or "the '10s" overall. that's probably just my perspective tho.
I wish Pill had stuck around longer. I still love his mixtape from that year. And he still tweets "another beautiful day. gotta thank the lord for that" several times a week.
Most of my favorite releases from this year were singles, mixtapes, EPs, and those weird bonus albums like "The Fame Monster." Albums were kinda not fun at all in 2009.

2009 was probably my most successful year musically - it seemed like at that point in time anyone from Bristol who produced halfway passable dubstep could get booked, so I spent a fair bit of time DJing in Eastern Europe / Amsterdam / various Bristol dives. Also had a remix I did for Si Begg doing the rounds which eventually came out on Tigerbeat6, good times.Musically, aside from the neverending dubstep promos I remember really getting into Squires of Gothos / really obnoxious bassline house - nothing that has aged well at all but was great fun at the time..

I find it hard to remember tracks by year but would absolutely co-sign 2009 as peak UK Funky, the Petchy / Sweep Dem Gally Live FM sets of that era remain totally exhilarating. Dunno if Benny B still posts here but he did sterling work recording and sharing those as I recall.

JCLC, that Eric Copeland album was a big deal for me too. As flappy's heard me say a couple times, I've drifted away from him in the last half decade or so because he's TOO prolific and I'm having a harder time keeping up (again, getting old) with artists who release so much music so quickly.

God but it's hardly a 'classic year' for music is it? is there such a thing any more? I know we've had threads about this kind of thing, where people cite 1967, 1977, 1979, 1987, 1994 etc as iconic years for one reason or another like a new style bursting into the scene or a glut of fantastic albums... ILM even had a nice 'I love 1998' moment a wee while back.. But I don't really think of many years post-2005 as being particularly remarkable either way. they all just feel like a jumble of good/bad/okay music that aren't really marked by a pivotal event― frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, January 17, 2019 4:51 PM (yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post PermalinkI think we're just old.― pomenitul, Thursday, January 17, 2019 4:54 PM (yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Well, I thought 2005 itself was a pretty good year for music in terms of number of great albums released. Since then, I'd say 2007 and 2009 for last decade, and this decade I'd say 2013 runs away with it, although the last couple of years have been decent.

2018 was a real stinker for me. most albums i anticipated (hop along, 1975) didn’t live up to expectations, didn’t connect w much rap (although tbh sort of stopped checking), few pop bangers... got streaming on my phone and my tastes became super normy (stopped checking for house/techno aside from mixes cus nothing is on it) few good surprises by artists i had forgotten about or written off (parquet courts, arctic monkeys, amen dunes)

my 2018 tracks list is well over 50% afro pop, dancehall, SA house and related. A clutchful of token rock acts: Ought, The Beths, Parquet Courts, Malkmus, Teleman and Kero Kero Bonita. Little bit of electronic: Ross From Friends, Autechre. If it wasn't for those, I don't know what new music I would have listened to this year. My albums list is very thin. Still, I don't think it's been a bad year for the music I did listen to.

'09 (and especially '10-11) were tremendously exciting for me in terms of electronic music. Mount Kimbie's Maybes ep came out in' 09, and that 5 Years of Hyperdub comp, FlyLo, etc. Between UK dance music and 'post-dubstep' and the L.A. stuff it felt like a huge wave of creativity and new ideas, and for the first time (personally) also had an air of accessibility, like anyone might be able to contribute something.

describes a complex and ambiguous romantic situation, beautifully layered musically gradually morphing from textural bells into a more traditional r&b ensemble into horn arrangements which burst from the surface of the song like mountains in a relief map. and it was a hit

2009 was a bit of a transitional year for me in terms of what I was listening to, in the sense that I was beginning to move towards getting back into '80s music/synthpop (both familiar and unfamiliar) in a much bigger way than ever before and starting to move away from listening to "indie"/alternative rock stuff so much.
I remember at the time playing the shit out of the Manic Street Preachers' Journal For Plague Lovers, thinking higher of Muse's The Resistance than most, being initially delighted then suddenly disappointed (it was a fast burner) by Super Furry Animals' Dark Days/Light Years, and loving The Flaming Lips' Embryonic ...
Of course there was also Fever Ray and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' It's Blitz!, both of which I still play the shit out of. Greek synthpoppers Marsheaux released their best album, Lumineux Noir. Depeche Mode and Pet Shop Boys released albums this year that admittedly weren't up there with their best, but both featured at least one killer single and it mattered little since I was listening to and getting a lot out of the back catalogues of both bands a lot.
I didn't really rate the La Roux album or The xx's debut, even though on paper I should have been into both. It took until 2 years ago for The xx to finally make an album I liked. Of course, I disliked the Animal Collective album and still do.
I hated Arctic Monkeys in 2009 but have since come to really, really love Humbug, and I still think the album Franz Ferdinand put out that year wasn't all that bad.

Also, I seem to remember 2009 as the year that a lot of bands/artists that had only been popular a couple of years before were starting to enter the "yawn, nobody gives a fuck" zone: Maximo Park, The Cribs, Jarvis Cocker, The Rakes (who I never liked), Kasabian (who I also never liked), Weezer, Doves, Editors and Green Day all released lousy records that year. Eels, Art Brut, Gomez and Graham Coxon all released albums that even their own fanbases struggled to get excited about.

For me, in retrospect, 2009 was a pretty bad year, maybe the worst of the 2000s. Stuff I liked then that I think still holds up would be the Bat For Lashes, Camera Obscura, Nellie McKay and Tanya Morgan albums, but it trails off pretty quickly after that. I think I was kind of in a transitional place in my listening habits.

I hate to stand up for Kasabian in any way, but that album was pretty huge for them. It gave them a top three single and sold just as much as the previous album. I will happily stand up for the Art Brut album though. They came very close to repeating the brilliance of the debut and it is very popular with their (admittedly quite modest) fanbase. You're right about the others. 2008/9 was a great time seeing all those landfill indie bands falling one by one. The relative failure of the Kaiser Chiefs and Razorlight albums in the fall of 2008 were particular highlights from that era.
