Low "Trust" - Classic or Dud?

I noticed this was mentioned a few times on the "Disappointed" thread. Can't say I agree. It's my 2nd favourite of theirs, after the utterly gorgeous "Secret Name". It's also my 2nd favourite of the year. "La la la Song" is possibly the sweetest thing they've ever done, and "Tonight" is dreamy and magical enough to be on Loveless. They even manage to raise the pace on "Canada". Who could ask for more?

I think it's a big improvement on the slightly patchy "Things We Lost in the Fire". Who's with me?

i want to be with you, but i bought this album about three weeks ago (?) and haven't listened to it yet

you have to be in a mood to listen to the disc. but when i am in the mood, its absolutely wonderful.

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 18 November 2002 02:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not the biggest Low fan in the world, but Trust is just plain boring. Give me Secret Name or Long Division and then make yerself scarce.

I'm glad they've learned the virtues of overproduction but unfortunately they still sound like Low underneath it. Actually I did kinda enjoy seeing them 5 years ago but didn't enjoy them this year so maybe the songs aren't as good anymore.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the songs are as good, or better than they were before, purely on the virtue of the boy/girl harmonies. Lovely stuff, and one of my favourites of the year, certainly.

dud. i think we discussed this a bit on one of the other low threads? anyway, it was the album that made me realise i don't like them nearly as much as i thought i did.

"i think we discussed this a bit on one of the other low threads?"

Whaddya know, you're correct. Someone revived a Low thread set up in April by yours truly to discuss "Trust". I really should keep track of my old threads before I set up new ones!

Dud, the guy sings too much, and at times it's like they are just going through the motions. "Last Snowstorm of the Year" is nice.

classic - the "Canada" single w/ Pink Floyd's "Fearless" (here entitled "Climbing")

Trust hasn't hit me as hard as the last two, but it's still one of the best albums of the year.

i find trust to be quite a good album. initially i was put off by how produced and melodic it was -- but after i listened to it a few times i really got into the little flourishes that are lurking just under the surface (what the hell is all that rustling noise?). the songwriting is quite good as well -- it seems a definite step forward from "things we lost in the fire"

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Monday, 18 November 2002 20:55 (twenty-three years ago)

When the hell were Low not melodic?

Yancey (ystrickler), Monday, 18 November 2002 20:58 (twenty-three years ago)

hmm, good point. maybe melodic wasn't the best word. i just immediately felt the melodies on "trust" to be a bit too obvious and MOR campfire. kinda. it took a couple of listens to discover that i was missing the point.

I'm guessing you're thinking the "La La La Song" in particular, in which case I agree. I would call Trust a dud. Pretty dull, overall. Some good tunes ("Point of Disgust" and "Canada," primarily), but not anywhere near their best work. The Pink Floyd cover (on the single) is a great one though.

three years pass...
dud. i think we discussed this a bit on one of the other low threads? anyway, it was the album that made me realise i don't like them nearly as much as i thought i did.

i am such an idiot sometimes.

God damn it, why does this sound so great this morning?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 12 January 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

their best record.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 12 January 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

I think I agree w/ that

i think c'mon is their best record at this point but this is close

I really love Tchad Blake's production, such a wild contrast from the Albini albums

Never stopped thinking this is their best record.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 12 January 2017 23:41 (eight years ago)

"The Lamb" is my favorite song on the album, but I have a strange attraction for songs that sound like they were recorded off mic in another room with a lot of hiss:

Fairport Convention – The Lord Is in This Place…How Dreadful Is This Place
Damian Jurado - Walk With Me
Kings of Convenience – The Girl From Back Then
Low – I Remember
Neil Young – Soldier
Sonic Youth – Providence
Sonic Youth – Winner's Blues
The Germs – Forming
Tom Waits – The Ocean Doesn’t Want Me

Ha working my way thru this great list... good ear!

rip van wanko, Friday, 13 January 2017 04:46 (eight years ago)

I would add The National's "29 Years"

I haven't spent a ton of time with this album but I'm listening to it now, 'Time is the Diamond' is great. I don't really dig Mimi's drums getting the Albini treatment though.

It's funny, there are some pretty brutal pfork reviews for their albums around this time.
