Hye-Jin Park (Korean deep house, I guess?)

I was listening to the top 77 of 2018 tunes on Youtube, and this came up on the algorithm, and wow! (Apparently it's been sponsored or something, cos there's plenty of comments on the video of people just hearing it randomly.) Somehow the combination of the mellow house vibes and singsongy semi-rapping remind me of the Greek project Αλλού, whose sole album I adore. Anyway, apparently Hye-Jin Park has a whole EP out with similar sound, I'm listening it on Bandcamp and it's pretty dope! She's only 23, so feels like there's a promising future ahead if she sounds so assured already.

I bought the EP and have been listening to it a while, and it's really nice. Also kinda reminds me of Moomin in how tastefully she uses the sparse samples. I'm not fully sold on the vocals yet, though maybe it's just the effect of not understanding the language. Would love to hear some instrumental tracks from her, anyway.

Yeah, that's cool, the whole EP is.

She's playing live at a local club here on Easter Sunday, I guess I'll have to go and see.

LOVE this ep. Been seeing a lot of comparisons to Yaeji, which seems inevitable I guess, but their sounds are totally different imo.

Roz, Thursday, 28 February 2019 12:25 (six years ago)

this is so much better anyway

She had a gig here a couple of weeks ago, mostly DJing, but she also played the songs from the EP and did live vocals on top of them. Really good gig, you could tell the her skills were still a bit rough around the edges, but she had enthusiasm to spare, and the track selections were top-notch. Mostly '90s or '90s-influenced deep and vocal house, unsurprisingly, but a very good set, I got some friends of mine who normally don't much listen to house music to come to to the club, and they danced their asses off. She also played a new track of hers, it was very much in the vain of EP, meaning awesome!

New single "Ahead of Time" is excellent, similar chilled and dreamy vibe to the EP but with bumping breakbeats.

tried to listen to her new album but I should probably just accept that she's not my thing despite it v much being my thing on paper

Murgatroid, Saturday, 11 September 2021 06:42 (three years ago)

Nah I find this album pretty underwhelming, and I thought her first EP was excellent. I'm tempted to posit that each release has been a little bit less exciting than then before, but it's maybe that her original trick (deep house with repetitive spoken word vocals) gets old quickly and she's not good enough at her new trick (zero-effort downbeat r&b with spoken word vocals) to compensate.

Tim F, Saturday, 11 September 2021 06:56 (three years ago)

my impressions was there's some decent stuff here but not really enough ideas to keep my interest for an entire album

Very underwhelming. The last EP was my favourite. I came around on "Let's Sing Let's Dance", it's a beautiful little song... and it's head and shoulders above the rest of what mostly seems like a pretty dark pandemic depression (Good Morning Good Night). Only other track i keep is "Never Die", a quick techno proof of life

new album out. haven´t listened yet, but I find her new "style" (see album cover and her social media) a bit bizarre tbh
