The Worst Songs that you Really Like

So many people's favorites turned out to be other people's most loathed recordings ever - I wondered if it wouldn't be more interesting to just post those embarrassing horrid tunes that you absolutely love to death even though you know you ought to know better.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 18 November 2002 01:18 (twenty-three years ago)

My weakness is pale Anglo-Saxons with keyboards and ripping awesome hair.

1. Send Me An Angel - Real Life
2. Height of The Fighting - Heaven 17 (that was very difficult)
3. Lucy Can''t Dance - David Bowie (that wretched Black Tie White Noise album, arrgh)

My other weakness is Young MC.

4. Bust a Move - Young MC (it's 4 because I'm not very ashamed of this actually).

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 18 November 2002 01:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"Words" by F.R. David (mainly because of the chord sequence)

I love all the songs I know by the guy who writes for Meat Loaf and Bonnie Tyler. Steinman, maybe.

But he's probably well respected around here.

So to really shock I'm gonna have to say something special.

Okay, there is a song by the Stereophonics that I think is terrific.

The song is "Mr Writer".

I admit the lyrics are a laugh. They're not good.

I like the tune and the music though. I think it's because I'd like any song that tries to sound like Lennon's "How do you sleep?".

I also like "Zombie" by the Cranberries.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 18 November 2002 04:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure some people find Triumph's "Magic Power" embarassing.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 18 November 2002 04:20 (twenty-three years ago)

1. If you steal my sunshine by Len

god, liking that song makes me feel guilty.

That one song by Primitve Radio God with the BB King Sample.

It is more of a memory than anything else. It was just something on the radio during a particular section of my life.

What's The Story Morning Glory (album) by Oasis

I played this tape over and over when I took a roadtrip to Montreal by myself when I was 18. It was the soundtrack to a very crazy weekend.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 18 November 2002 04:34 (twenty-three years ago)

"What's Up?" -- worst lyrics ever, but the vocal hooks!

Aaron A., Monday, 18 November 2002 04:48 (twenty-three years ago)

As mentioned on another thread, Triumph's "Follow Your Heart". Especially now that I can't stand Cinderella anymore.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Sterling Clover is eight times ballsier than a gladiator allergic to cats.

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:31 (twenty-three years ago)

BTW I can't believe anyone's embarrassed by Meat Loaf or "Bust a Move".

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:33 (twenty-three years ago)

It's not so much liking the song as the way I dance to it that's embarrassing. I can cut a rug to anything disco/jungley and most hip-hop, but Flea's bass gets all wiggly and I since I am not allowed by my religion to hang on the wall during this tune I inevitably end up looking like a thoroughly inebriated white boy imbecile, which makes it even harder to chat up girls in leather skirts. Then Billie Jean comes on and I proficiently bite every last MJ move in the book earning slackjaw stares and high-fives from drunk people, and I forget the whole debacle.

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:41 (twenty-three years ago)

Asia's "Don't Cry". Damn Yankees' "High Enough". Um, what other totally awesome 80s supergroup hits were there?

Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 18 November 2002 06:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Nick: Night Ranger, 'Sister Christian'. Yes, 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart'.

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 18 November 2002 07:08 (twenty-three years ago)

While Night Ranger and Yes were both "super" groups, I don't think they fit the definition of supergroup.

Asia had fellas from King Crimson, ELP, Yes, etc. Damn Yankees had Nuge and a guy from Night Ranger and Tommy Shaw from Styx. The only other supergroup that comes to mind right now is GTR, which featured Steve Howe (Yes) and Steve Hackett (Genesis) and some other guys. "When the Heart Rules the Mind" is just about as "80's big rock" as you can get.

paul cox (paul cox), Monday, 18 November 2002 07:18 (twenty-three years ago)

"Memory" from Cats.

Leee (Leee), Monday, 18 November 2002 07:32 (twenty-three years ago)

'I will always love you'

James Ball (James Ball), Monday, 18 November 2002 14:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I like "Send Me An Angel," too. Didn't the band remake it three times after it hit when they realized that they were never ever going to write another song as good as that one?

"Mr. Roboto" fits in here, too. I'm constantly intregued by the idea of songs that the artist doesn't deserve--i.e., songs that are so much better than anything else than anything else that they seem to have been inserted into the artist's music by some outside force. In fact, I think I'm going to go make a thread about that now.

Every Single Red Sovine song with a story in it, AND Freightliner Fever.

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the new Tom Jones single!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:08 (twenty-three years ago)

God, that's the worst thing Jones has ever recorded (IMO)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with jess here, but songs I should hate based on previous experience with similar songs but don't at all:

Staind - It's Been Awhile
several songs I heard once on light rock radio whose titles I don't know
a few Moby songs (I don't really understand everyone's problem with this guy)
All Blind Guardian's songs
and you can count me in with the "Teenage Dirtbag" and "Under the Bridge" fans.

Anyway, if I really like a song it's because I think it's a really good one, and people who don't are just mistaken. I don't think anyone should experience guilt or shame for liking a song unless it's one by Creed, so Mr. Michael Bourke you can just fuck on off.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:21 (twenty-three years ago)

That Bruce Cockburn song is so far from being a bad song that I don't even know what else to say.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:31 (twenty-three years ago)

My Own Worst Enemy is one of my favorite songs EVAH.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:39 (twenty-three years ago)

John - Moby, unfortunately is associated primarily with:
1) selling out with "Play," which is really a beautiful album
2) "18," which is a HORRIBLE album
3) being weird as hell.. and THAT I can't really argue...
But "Play," "Moby," and "Early Underground" are great albums, so it annoys me that people hate him so much.

I suppose I should add Nirvana as my answer, since everyone here seems to hate them. What a pity.

"More, More, More" ..Andrea True Connection
Not quite sure where this song lies on the spectrum of crap..I think its truly brill but suspect many feel otherwise.

At the risk of being banished from ILx...Limp Bizkit, "Nookie."
(Comments about blind pigs and acorns thoroughly apply.)

j.lu (j.lu), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 16:06 (twenty-three years ago)

aww, "Nookie" is a fine song. Distinct Fugazi influence on that thing. Have no shame in your game. I guess that's my problem with this list. The implication is that if you like something, that doesn't mean its any good. When the only real reason a song could be good is that you like it!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 16:30 (twenty-three years ago)

When the only real reason a song could be good is that you like it!

Quite right. :-) But I'll spare you the rants, check the archives. ;-)

Well, I like it because I think it's a really good song. What's your problem, asshole?

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 17:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Wait, there's a new Tom Jones single??? Details please!

Ok, I'll answer the question if you promise not to tell: "Superstar" by the Carpenters.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Sean, there's a new Tom Jones album.

Michael Bourke, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"More, More, More" ..Andrea True Connection

This song is hysterical to me because of Ms. True's totally bored, beyond-blasé performance. I wonder how her porno films were.

Sean (Sean), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 19:27 (twenty-three years ago)

That cover of Adams' 'Heaven': I like it a lot because of the strong residue of Adams, though I hate the genre.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahahaha speaking of Adams - Summer of '69 is possibly the greatest achievement in rock history.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I have a graphic EQ on my car-stereo, and I like to change it to drop the vocals as far out of the mix as possible on every single song off the newest No Doubt LP.

The MUSIC on that album is the fuckin bomb-diggitah. It makes for some afuckinmazing drive-home-from-work-getting-pissed-at-traffic-freestyling-beats.

Gwen sings and writes like she's about 4 fucking years old.

Oh, and (here's one to raise some hackles) I kinda like that Justin Timberlake song...if only because it reminds me what Michael Jackson would have sounded like if he hadn't turned to The Dark Side.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:35 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes. This thread doesn't make any sense if you presume that everything you like is good. But that wasn't my point - my point was that (almost) everybody enjoys a bit of cognitive dissonance (HA! big words! I'm smart) now and then when listening to music that's associated with other things that they dislike, for instance, if I hear 'Can't get you out of my head', I go 'trite na-na crap' and then another part of me says 'GREAT let's dance WHEEE' and there's a fistfight in my mind.

My most disgustingly abject apologies to those who needed this explanation.

Tom Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, well I guess then I'd say Interpol. The singer is the worst David Bowie imitator since Ian McCullough, with none of the, for the lack of a better word, "passion" to make up for it. That said, the band is damn good musically and the horrific lyrics actually help make the band less generically "college rock." So if we're talking about battles in your head, I guess it'd be Interpol. But even that I don't feel too bad about. I don't care if I'm laughing with the band or at as long as I'm happy (though some bands I laugh at don't make me happy).

"The Freshman" - Verve Pipe
(I still can't figure out what the protagonist is so angsty about.)

"Girl All The Bad Guys Want" - Bowling For Soup
(Future Rock'n'Roll Jeopardy : One-Hit Wonders Of The 00s question.)

"Right Now" - SR-71
(Faux-pop-punk at its finest.)

"Semi-Charmed Life" - Third Eye Blind
(As mentioned on another thread, best pop song ever written about being strung out on crystal meth.)

"Wired For Sound" - Cliff Richard
(Childhood favourite - sue me.)

"Mirror, Mirror (Mon Amour)" - Dollar
(Another childhood fave, and a pre-fame Trevor Horn production to boot.)

"Faded" - Soul Decision
(As was correctly pointed elsewere, the proto-Maroon 5. Yay Canuckia!)

"That's The Way It Is" - Celine Dion
(The only song of hers that doesn't make me lunge for the dial.)

does this mean the songs you like the least?

cºzen (Cozen), Tuesday, 7 September 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I honestly don't believe in "guilty pleasures" (if i like something, it's good, period -- and you should think that about stuff you like, too), but i just wanted to say that i remember "words" by f.r. david from when i lived in germany in the early '80s, and i loved it then and haven't heard it since. (that said, the worst-SEEMING records i've liked lately are probably "1985" by bowling for soup, "black betty" by spiderbait, and the ashlee simpson album. except they are definitely better than some other stuff i like, which was my point.)

chuck, Tuesday, 7 September 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I recently looked up the meaning of "The Freshmen". According to the singer/songwriter, it's just about how the narrator got a girl pregnant. She had an abortion, they broke up, she committed suicide. He tries to justify it because it 'wasn't his fault' that she was in love with him. "She was touching her face", the source of much confusion, apparently just means that she seduced him (because of the way the Divinyls' singer touched her face in a sexy way - I don't remember it personally - in the "I Touch Myself" video). The stuff about his best friend just seems to mean that his friend helped him hook up with her + maybe she was his best friend's ex. It's unfortunate that the way it was written, it really sounds like the song's about gang rape.

I like the song too - I don't even think it's bad, I think it's a great song - but I liked it a lot better when a Nepean School of Music school rock band did it with a female singer. It was my introduction to the song and hearing the original was a little bit of a disappointment. She sang it with much more detachment, which seemed to work.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The Freshmen
The Verve Pipe

When I was young and knew everything
And she a punk who rarely took advice
Now I'm guilt stricken sobbin' with my head on the floor
Stop a babys breath and a shoe full of rice

I can't be held responsible
cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
she fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
what made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
for the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
we were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
his girl took a week's worth of valium and slept
and now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor
thinks about her now and how he never really wept he says

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
we never talk of our lacking relationships
and how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor
we fell through the ice when we tried not to slip, we'd say

I can't be held responsible
cause she was touching her face
I won't be held responsible
she fell in love in the first place

For the life of me I cannot remember
what made us think that we were wise and we'd never compromise
for the life of me I cannot believe we'd ever die for these sins
we were merely freshmen

My best friend took a week's vacation to forget her
his girl took a week's worth of valium and slept
now he's guilt stricken sobbing with his head on the floor

We've tried to wash our hands of all of this
we never talk of our lacking relationships
and how we're guilt stricken sobbing with our heads on the floor

--

Such melodrama. OK, I really need to go study now.
