Of Montreal: C/D?

Inspired by the E6 thread, I think it's high time we come to a consensus on Of Montreal. I personally fall more into the "Classic" camp, or at least the "Not Dud" camp; Coquelicot feels like a demented children's storybook, a brightly colored stream of consciousness (both musically and lyrically) epic adventure in the tradition of Grimm's macabre fairy tales. Sure, none of it makes any sense, but neither does "Jabberwocky". And the new album is just plain funny, in kind of a dark-humor way, like They Might Be Giants' first three or four albums.

So there you go: Of Montreal = Lewis Carroll fronting TMBG. Maybe this actually belongs in the "Bizarre comparisons" thread...

yes how 'bizarre'

I'm totally with you, Nick. Check out my defense of the vastly underrated Aldhil's on this thread.

years ago someone put "My Favorite Boxer" on a mix for me and to this day it gives me a big goofy grin.

As the years pass, I come to the conclusion that there are about 5 Of Montreal songs that I really like, these are:

"one of a very few of a kind"
"sing you a love you song"
"the minature philosopher"
"nickee coco and the invisible tree"
"the events leading to the collapse of detective dulllight"

Not really a dud, because they're certainly not bad at what they do. It's just a bit too cloyingly cute for me.

Not an outright dud. But nothing they did that i ever heard was any kind classic, and they never did nearly as much for me as Beulah, NMH, AiS, etc etc etc.

I have several singles and the compilation LP on Earworm. I like one of the singles a lot, a couple of the others a bit, and the LP barely at all - a few times whilst listening to it, I looked up from what I was doing and exclaimed "this is really fucking bad!"..

early crap is too fucking nasal and tinny for words, but I like the tighter songcraft and lessening of audio corn on Adhils a lot.

I wouldn't say classic as I don't care for all of their tunes, but IMHO "In the army, kid" alone is enough to avoid dud status.

absolutely classic, the brightest thing for me is kevin barne's complete lack of inhibition as a singer and performer. his goofiness overshadows the fact that his records are pretty complex, i can't imagine many who could come up with something as outrageous and strange as 'coquelicot...'. even the cd of his high school recordings is charming and he's clearly the best singer of the e6 lot, able to be tender and boisterous. 'kissing in the grass' on the new one is destined to be a classic in someone's universe for a long time.
