$30 per used value those must be a pretty choice 400 records

the estimate of their value is in fact from hom entering his collection on discogs, so it's not complete nonsense. we were reading the article at work last week and scrutinizing the photo to try and see what he was into... besides pink floyd it's hard to tell

the current campus obsession is with Domino, a chunky black and white cat that hangs out in front of one of the main buildings
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 01:46 (six years ago)
That article was pretty funny.
This increase in vinyl popularity is one reason West generally doesn’t talk about his collection. He said he didn’t want to seem pretentious.
― yuh yuh (morrisp), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 13:49 (six years ago)
I love this so much, thank you. the dollar amount could be the Discogs high estimate, which is usually pretty hilarious. I saw a guy locally on Facebook marketplace trying to move his collection of 100 or 2 at that amount
― maffew12, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 14:19 (six years ago)
Thanks for this, the comments section is priceless (no pun intended)
Could do with some better equipment/speaker placement

It’s hard to pick the most humorous part of the article; but it may be the professional audiovisual archivist attesting to the fact that LPs can, in fact, be stored for years.

I am appreciating the other articles from Landry like "Quadriplegic artist paints from the heart with his mouth".

The Daily Texan's high point was in the 90s when they briefly had a comic strip called "Nutty: The Kitten with Testicles for Legs"
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:16 (six years ago)
that Haken record on the floor actually is kinda expensive, I saw a copy at the local shop for like $38.99 or something stupid
― frogbs, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:20 (six years ago)
I wish someone had written a newspaper article about me and my then miniscule record collection when I was in college.
― Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:29 (six years ago)
It would have been way better, too, because my name's actually Austin.
I dunno why this part makes me laugh:
"Now, he purchases records himself locally or online."
I think because I mentally insert an exclamation point, and maybe 'online' in italics.
― Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:39 (six years ago)
what, he doesn't order by mail by checking off little boxes in a newsprint catalogue?

I assumed she was highlighting that it's a one man show. What, you guys don't involve your friends and family in the complicated logistics of locating and purchasing records of vinyl?
― maffew12, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:48 (six years ago)
Someone has helpfully pointed out to the writer on Twitter that the article is funny to record collectors, who often have the noted number of records *in a single genre*. Can you imagine!Deliberate troll of collectors? Too perfect.

somebody find a journalist who can figure out his Discogs username so we can peruse his entire collection

― sleeve, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:09 (six years ago)
it might not be too difficult, there are only 80 or so discogs users who have that Haken LP across all three versions...
― omar little, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:24 (six years ago)
I might suggest we not actually do that
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:27 (six years ago)
pssh that's nothing, I had a high school classmate who was bad at saving money and worked at best buy during the late 90s. this was when they had the gigantic cd section in the middle of the store
by the time i ran into him after a year or so of college, he'd amassed something like 800 compact discs
― mh, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:42 (six years ago)
I worked at a record store in college and after. We could order anything we wanted for ourselves at cost and pay whatever was paid out for used cds and keep our own hold shelves in the back. This may be part of why I am such a minimalist now. Moving music is really annoying.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:47 (six years ago)
I'd wager that more college kids own turntables/vinyl now than did when I was in college (1990s).
― yuh yuh (morrisp), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:51 (six years ago)
yeah they say it's really making a comeback
― maffew12, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:53 (six years ago)
the number was practically zero during my college years. my friend who worked at the radio station probably had one, but that wasn't even universal among the college radio kids -- they'd just use the ones at the station
― mh, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:53 (six years ago)
I remember when Best Buy was selling CDs as loss leaders, I bought so many 4AD releases that had previously cost like $22.95 each imported and were now like $7.99!
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:54 (six years ago)
I worked at the radio station too, I remember people had turntables but a lot had tecnics because (90s) I feel like everyone was starting to be "djs."
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:55 (six years ago)
xp I think that came after my friend's time -- almost everything was still at the $18 price
― mh, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:56 (six years ago)
I knew of a guy in college who bought 7"s, but don't think I ever saw a turntable between leaving home and then buying one myself in the early 2000s (not counting a CMJ internship in mid-'90s; and even then, I think only a few editors had them in their offices).
― yuh yuh (morrisp), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:56 (six years ago)
90s was also when bands were putting out a lot of 7"s.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:57 (six years ago)
In the UK loads had turntables as they wanted to be techno/house etc DJ's
― Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:58 (six years ago)
I take it back, my roommate senior year had one. I remember listening to a few 7"s on his stereo.
― yuh yuh (morrisp), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:58 (six years ago)
you could also easily find turntables at garage sales for like $5-10.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:00 (six years ago)

― steven, soda jerk (sic), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:01 (six years ago)
are they putting out more now? I remember it becoming almost a trendy thing monthly clubs, etc.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:03 (six years ago)
maybe bands who would be played at college radio stations and carried at independent music stores had a surge of 7"s.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:04 (six years ago)
looks like the sub pop singles club, which was a 7" subscription thing, closed up shop in 1993
― mh, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:06 (six years ago)
There were tons of 7" in the '90s, I'm just saying I barely knew anyone with a turntable in college specifically. Maybe my experience isn't typical, though (among other things, we were required to live in the dorms through junior year).
― yuh yuh (morrisp), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:08 (six years ago)
slumberland is doing a 7" singles club this year! but I have roughly 1,000,000 indie-pop 45s from the 90s
― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:09 (six years ago)
Kill Rock Stars had their singles club in the late 90s. I think I still have a weird Beach Boys 7" from sub pop.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:09 (six years ago)
7" singles were really cheap in the 90s, not now. Im not paying a tenner for one
― Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:14 (six years ago)
Yeah I just looked at that slumberland club. stuff is expensive. I think I only ever belong to an rem fanclub for one year where we got the holiday 7".
― Yerac, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:16 (six years ago)
Haven’t read this whole thread yet, but feel like maybe I should have used this guy to sell off what was left of my dollar recordsvinyl collection to maximize pricing.

p sure that bands were putting out more 7"s in the 1980s and 1950s and 1960s
― steven, soda jerk (sic), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:36 (six years ago)
oh that's what you meant. I was putting it in the frame of after cds became the main format.

7" singles were really cheap in the 90s
I seem to remember getting lots from Sympathy for the Record Industry through the mail for cheap. Six for $20 or something like that.
― eva logorrhea (bendy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 21:33 (six years ago)
the lede is kind of buried, even if the entire piece nears non-news: he only acquired 400 records in 10 years as a casual record buyer and "accidentally" bought $10,000 worth, which means he only made a couple thousand dollars in that time
