Steinberg & Kelly Hits Poll

these guys wrote some monster hits in the 80s. Steinberg wrote Pat Benatar's "Precious Time" by himself but after that this team kept charting for some time, for better & worse depending on yr taste. I've left the recording artists' names out since most of these songs are so well-known that to just see the names points up how big a songwriting this team was for a good minute.

"True Colors" and "I'll Stand By You" are true crap. Susanna Hoffs got credit for "In Your Room" and "Eternal Flame," so acknowledge her share of the smut.

Ranked:

I Touch Myself
In Your Room
Like a Virgin
Alone

Laura Branigan fuckin goes off at the end of "Power of Love" but the song itself is inferior to the theme songs from about half a dozen contemporaneous novelas of the period

I like True Colors better than you do but its use over the years has drained much of its charm -- when it was new, I loved it, it felt fragile

I'm between Heart & Whitney here honestly

I share your scorn for "I'll Stand by You" though, that's one of the low points of the era

"Alone"

I did that too

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2019 00:44 (six years ago)

It does more in its chorus than some of the others do in the entire song

If "I Drove All Night" had been here, I probably would've voted for that instead, but "Alone" is magnificent (as a Heart song...other versions are trash).

"True Colors" and "I'll Stand By You" are true crap

lol these are the two i like best. otherwise "i touch myself" is good and i like "alone" too but it's soured a bit on overexposure. remember when it got covered a million times on american idol b/c the high-register backing vox on the chorus automatically make the lead vocalist sound impressive?

the big hits steinberg wrote with josh alexander -- jojo's "too little too late", demi lovato's "give your heart a break", and nicole scherzinger's "don't hold your breath" (not a hit in the us, but #1 in the uk) -- might be better than all of these tbh

you guys ever hear the original version of "alone" by Valerie Stevenson and John Stamos from their CBS series? predates the Heart version by three years.

It matters because Whitney can't sing it either, or, rather, thinks she can sing it.

ughhh every time you say this i get that blood mist in my vision Alfred, swear to god

it’s fine if you dont *like* the song but she sings the fuck out of it. it’s pretty well documented.

I apologize. I'll shut up about it.

On the other hand, I like this bauble:

lol

it's so funny to me that "like a virgin" was one of the biggest hits of madonna's career at the time yet nowadays there are like a dozen other madonna songs even the most casual fan would rather hear. kinda deserved, it has not aged well compared to much of the rest of her output. (undeservedly forgotten from the same album: "angel".)

dyl, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 02:08 (six years ago)

Like A Virgin is clearly her least good 80s album, and towards the bottom end of her run of 80s singles. What 4 schlubs voted for it here?
