Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 November 2002 21:16 (twenty-three years ago)

If someone were to own something by Fugazi and David Gray, though, then they'd be great. Or an English teacher who still thinks he's in touch with the kids.

original bgm, Monday, 18 November 2002 22:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Trance. Oi. Nu-metal/rap rock/whatever.
All specifically designed and built for assholes.
Oh, and The Prodigy. Completely custom constructed big beats for total fucking assholes. The Grateful Dead. Created by God to appease millions of assholes.

Interesting how this thread is actually more about who we identify as assholes and not so much about music.

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 18 November 2002 22:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Minor Threat. Anyone who can identify with the song "Guilty of Being White" can go eat an ass hoagie.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know if dead and phish fans are really assholes. they're just anoying and kinda slow. n have awful taste.

emo

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Title of this thread => Great John Cage pieces that never were

o. nate (onate), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Strangely enough the Dead fans I've met have been all flaming lie-to-your-face pricks of the most superbly vain, hypocritical variety. But Phish fans, who in my experience are mostly just jazz performance majors from the boonies, are nice enough.

Another one: Crass. Formed in order to make it easier to identify assholes, and highly effective.

Tom Millar (Millar), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:15 (twenty-three years ago)

MXPX, Creed

Dave Beckhouse (Dave Beckhouse), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Musicians who try their best to sound like assholes don't make music for assholes- discuss.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 18 November 2002 23:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Bob Dylan, Rush, Bright Eyes, Atmosphere; I can't believe it looks like no one has said Big Black yet, although i suppose Shellac covers it. Ani DeFranco (did i spell that right? For girl "assholes", multiplied by infinity if a guy pretends to like that shit), and while I'm in this vein Dan Bern too. Hesher music. Hair metal, for the people with severely under-developed senses of irony that try to think that way anyway. Most Jazz. Other Muso music (Fusion! AIEEE!). Eminem (ha). Godspeed you black emperor (sp? again). & etc.

Dan I., Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:09 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been told that I'm an asshole no less than 21 times on this thread already. Not that I disagree or anything, but still...

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 00:31 (twenty-three years ago)

got any dave matthews band in your collection? how about live? take a glance through and if you see these, or sum 41, or matchbox 20, or extreme, (pause for a moment to second Creed), there is a strong possibility that you may be an asshole.

webcrack (music=crack), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:11 (twenty-three years ago)

20, including the majority of Dan I's list, I think.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Sum 41 fans are nice people. It seems we've confused "assholes" with "the entire record buying public". Creed seem like assholes, yeah. A lot of assholes I know listen to Creed, yeah. But a LOT of people listen to Creed. I appreciate that this thread is based on generalizations, I really do. I love that. But pop dissing on this particular thread seems especially misguided.

Adam A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Earth Crisis, Strife, Hatebreed et al.

Also: Anal Cunt--but I bet they're funny assholes.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:29 (twenty-three years ago)

meatmen. those family fun hits like 'crippled children suck' and 'tooling for anus'

actually maybe more like music for people with a sick sense of humor, i'm chuckling right now in fact

ron (ron), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 01:49 (twenty-three years ago)

RATM fans = assholes assholes assholes!!!

Curtis Stephens, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Blink 182, stupid frat-boy rock with idiotic poop jokes, they're definite assholes. Their fans are just 12 year old girls though.

David Allen, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 02:38 (twenty-three years ago)

"Minor Threat. Anyone who can identify with the song "Guilty of Being White" can go eat an ass hoagie."

Fuck you!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Sorry, Alex. I! JUST! HATE! MYSELF! What the fuck have I done?!?!!?!

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably the Manics.

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

this is the story of a girl, who cried a river and drowned the whole world. And though she looks so sad in photographs, I absolutely love her...when she smiles!!!!

I don't know if the rest of 9 Days reaches this level of hell, but only an asshole could love this ode to perk.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Guns N roses

The Hegemon, Tuesday, 19 November 2002 04:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:30 (twenty-three years ago)

guns n roses fans just have a tragic sense of humor, that's all.

dyson (dyson), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

nobody has mentioned u2 yet = ILX has Jumped the Shark!

surely this means that u2 have Jumped the Shark!!!

My vote = Stereophonics.

alext (alext), Tuesday, 19 November 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Jackyl!!!

rat, Wednesday, 20 November 2002 01:13 (twenty-three years ago)

As a Dead fan does that mean I'm definitely an asshole?

Hopefully I'm not a vain, hypocritical prick as well.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 12:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Has someone dropped the Dead? Fuck, I'm an asshole too. As for the kiddy who dropped Dylan, he might as well go burn any books he doesn't have.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

how do you do that roger?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Oasis. Apotheosis of the genre. Music by assholes for assholes.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 13:09 (twenty-three years ago)

oi you!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 13:10 (twenty-three years ago)

Well Jules, you would begin by purchasing a large plot of land, say, just outside Aberdeen, about the size of Gloucester, constructing upon your new purchase an enormous ant farm and laboratory complex, kited out with the latest genetic technology. For here you will breed a new kind of ant, by fusing the genetic strain of the ant with that of the rhino; your new breed will be call the rant. After years of painstaking research and mistakes, terrible abortions and ruined organisms, one evening, as the lightening plays above your laboratory, you will scream "Eureka" to your hunchbacked assistant and pull down hard on the lever that will shortly channel raw electricity into the chimera that lies on the slab before you. "Arise my Queen Rant" you will burble before cackling insanely and rubbing your hands together, smearing the blood from your white overalls. The next step in your cunning plan would surely be to provide your Queen, who has by now ripped apart several of your minions as they cattle-prod her into a reinforced Titanium cage, with an army. Using the genetic maps you have painstakingly perfected, you will work quickly and within a year, the massive ant farm, a network of tunnels and caverns will be bristling with hordes of your vicious rants. You will, of course, have to in-build some sort of electrode to stop your rants from turning on you and your assistants but this should not prove an obstacle to the next phase of your plans. You will begin to piece together a nuclear arsenal the like of which has not been seen before while at the same time train your rants to target the smell of paper. That’s right paper Jules – and this is the clever bit, if you raise your army of rants on a philosophy of abject nihilism, they will follow the final critical phase of the plan to the letter. For you will fit each rant with a nuclear device and send them out into the wide, wide world. Think! None would withstand them – librarians would be powerless before their fury, and smashing down the doors to archives across the globe, your loyal rants would then detonate their deadly cargoes, their last salute to you their creator, almost certainly destroying all the books that you didn’t have.

Roger Fascist (Roger Fascist), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 13:26 (twenty-three years ago)

That's got to be post of the week. At least.

James Ball (James Ball), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Shit Bizkit

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

Just asking a question rog. sheesh!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Impressive rant about rants roger. It illustrates the concept of "burning all the books you never had" very well. You should write a SciFi book I guess instead of wasting your skills here.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

Roger- the new PKD?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 20 November 2002 15:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Lynrd Skynrd!

Why all the hate for DJ Shadow? Just curious?

Julien Sandiford (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 22 November 2002 08:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Jumped the shark?

Dan I., Friday, 22 November 2002 08:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Why all the hate for DJ Shadow? Just curious?

Topic title: "Music for assholes". DJ Shadow's main audience: students. You do the math.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Anyway IDM is music for assholes in definition.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 22 November 2002 15:09 (twenty-three years ago)

well, its def the 'worst' name for a genre.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 November 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

It just screams holier than thou, don't it? Ooh, intelligent dance music, as opposed to all that MORONIC HOSEBEAST MUSIC I was listening to prior! By very definition of the name it's made by assholes who think they are more clever than other people. Ergo...

(my ex boyfriend to thread now! Ooh boy, the fights, the fights, the times he pretended not to like Plaid and Aphex Twin)

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:13 (twenty-three years ago)

It just screams holier than thou, don't it? Ooh, intelligent dance music, as opposed to all that MORONIC HOSEBEAST MUSIC I was listening to prior! By very definition of the name it's made by assholes who think they are more clever than other people. Ergo...

I think people who actually use the term w/ any frequency don't think about what the letters mean. The comparison I like to make, John, is with R&B -- how often do you think of the words "rhythm & blues" when you think of Destiny's Child?
-- Mark (mark@pitchforkmedia.com), Yesterday 11:35 PM. (MarkR)

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway "holier than thou" really = dismissing a genre because you DON'T LIKE THE NAME

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:29 (twenty-three years ago)

Nice rant about rants. I'm gonna have nightmares.

Anyway...music for assholes?

*cough* VANILLA FRIGGIN ICE!!!! *cough*

nickalicious, Friday, 22 November 2002 21:40 (twenty-three years ago)

no no I dismiss the genre because a lot of it is shit (some OK things I suppose but my patience did snap on this one). and on top of that, there's the name.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:41 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not saying its music for assholes BTW.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio I was talking to Ally anyway.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:54 (twenty-three years ago)

anyway "holier than thou" really = dismissing a genre because you DON'T LIKE THE NAME

Um, considering that I was answering a post stating it was the worst name...?? What the fuck? Sorry, in the future I will ignore ALL THINGS SAID EVER.

I wasn't aware that "Music for Assholes" was going to be a thread with anything reasonable written on it anyway - by definition everyone is dismissing genres/artists/albums/songs for stupid reasons.

Ally (mlescaut), Friday, 22 November 2002 21:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yes mark I know (you quoted her) I'm just firing posts out there really but since i sort of revived it (it was nearly at the bottom of new ans page) I thought i'd reply.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 22 November 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

free noise.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

even though some people who make free noise and some people who listen to it are in fact very nice.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:09 (twenty-three years ago)

What is free noise?

man, Saturday, 23 November 2002 02:11 (twenty-three years ago)

Tenacious D.

Asshole L (Andrew L), Saturday, 23 November 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Most people who listen to any of this music are perfectly nice.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 23 November 2002 11:40 (twenty-three years ago)

"perfectly nice"? what have you done with our ally you alien bodysnatching fiend?

mark s (mark s), Saturday, 23 November 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

well borbetomagus to thread!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 23 November 2002 11:49 (twenty-three years ago)
